Ok guys, I know this may sound strange but just listen in plz. Toady has been sick for quite a while... What if he is in fact not sick at all? Just gone -- Abducted! Dwarf fortress in its current version is astounding in its originality and intense detail which surpasses most, nay -- all -- other games in the present world. In its current version. But, then we think, wait! Toady has almost finished his NEXT version. WTF. Martians, noticing the intense pulses of ingeniosity resonating from  Toady's fingernails, took who they thought was the most intelligent member of the human species back to their homeplanet to exhibit in a zoo! We will be forever doomed to endure the current version of DF and a perpetual sense of trust that Toady will soon be cured from his "sickness" so that he can release the new version. Lament my dwarves  :'(

You are a sad, strange little internet thing.

I'll wager caffein and lack of sleep were the inspiration for that post.

I don't think the gunpowder in/out should be such an issue.  Why not just have certain technology available in certain ages?  Like the bronze age, iron age, steel age, and then gun-powder age corresponding to the age of myth, legends, heroes, etc?  Then instead of clunking about with the init file, you just set what year world-gen should stop running at.  Furthermore, this could be bloated into a Civilization-style research feature.  The alchemist workshop could be used to research new technology in-game if the player has the right stuff available.  In adventure mode you could play a mad scientist alchemist who discovers how to make steel (since the dwarves will never share their secret with humans!) and from that point forward the civilization has access to steel.

Anyway, I've always wanted to suggest this because I thought it might be cool to play a game where your dwarves only know how to use copper weapons.  Just for kicks.

I'm sure someone has suggested this before, so my question is just basically "why not?"

I don't buy it.  According to the principals of realism it seems to me that plate should still be better or at least no worse at blocking damage from bunt weapons compared to leather armor- people wore padding under it after all.

I think the way it is now is the plate and leather are actually separate (since leather is not used in forging plate armor).  So if a dwarf equips the plate and no leather, he's got no leather underneath.  Just his regular clothes.  So to truly get dwarves to wear plate armor realistically, you should make a suit of leather armor to put underneath.  But even then, I think the leather padding used in historical plate mail is not the same as the hardened leather light armor.

It would be interesting to know if toady plans to diversify leather armor types according to whether they are soft, hard, studded, or even if you can have hide armor.  And then whether equipping these mitigates chafing (or whether chafing will play a part in armor).

Totally different question, but does anyone know if there is an actual word to describe armor use?  Like the skill for properly maintaining and donning armor?  I guess there isn't one...

(maybe I misunderstood your comment... but, uh, oh well, what I intended to say is that, right now dwarves seem to don armor without leather so there is nothing to mitigate blunt trauma)

if I were a knight I bet I could swim.  I could probably fly too.  Is there anything a knight can't do?

Merry Christmas from japan.  (It sucks to be here.)

I wanna talk about ponies now

I just use the caravans to get rid of my useless goblin junk.  I only melt goblin armor for the iron.  The advantage of this over magma or pit dumping is that your dwarfs gain xp for trading... Even though they are often just giving it away.  That said I look forward to the day when other civs stop paying me 600 for a giant cave spider shirt they can't possibly wear.

One thing I've always been wondering is why there are different skills for mace and hammer.  Don't you swing a mace the same way?  They seem more functionally equivalent than a short sword and a claymore but those both use the same sword weapon skill right?  I can understand a flail using different technique because it's attatched by chain to the handle.  But why aren't mace and war hammer the same skill?

I think the description paragraph should follow the example of match.com and other dating sites
Information like height, weight, eye color, hair color, hair length, skin color, and basic body type are obviously what we are most interested in real life
I don't think there's much room for speculation or argument
In addition to a standardized description like that above then a dwarfs more prominent features may be Added as additional notes
Again I think a dating sites profile page should provide an excellent model for dwarf fortress
I know we aren't technically interested in dating our dwarfs but many of us are interested in eugenic breeding.  Wait that IS dating

Anyway everyone who has been making suggestions for cleaning up the "somewhat" overly detailed under organized description paragraph has my support

Wounds and combat seems to be on its last legs too.
Interesting way to put it.

If anyone knows this please answer
Q for toady:
When dwarves give birth now will they first try to go to the hospital area to do so?  Or will Any old place still suffice?

Humans have bearded women
Why shouldn't dwarves?

42
I like dune
I just hate people who love it

John hodgeman!

Anyway dwarf fortress is better

Also, i feel your pain about these past few days. I also live in the PNW and having no air conditioning is a bitch when you are not used to hot weather.

Seattle bad but Tokyo even worse

Rainforest worst of all

No humidity effects yet in dwarf fortress right?
Accelerated food rot from humidity would make for more fun

Stupid iPhone

Had another question pop up during a long, boring meeting this morning.

Now that we have better control over Soldiers/Fortress Guard and civilians, where does the Hammerer fit in? Part of the Guard? A Civilian?
I think outcome same as if you lock hammerer in room for current version
Fortress guard beat victim instead
Marginal improvement at best

I wonder if confining him to a burrow will restrict his hammering jobs too. That would be a simple way to keep my legendary smith's spine nonshattered.
