DF Gameplay Questions / Re: KING DEAD
« on: August 19, 2009, 05:32:37 am »
any suggestions?

Isolate tantruming and insane dwarves so they don't kill more people - lock them away, wall them up where they stand, whatever it takes.  Take the effort to look at every profile of your dwarves - use the stable ones to keep your fortress alive while you're recovering - this is (in no particular order) Booze, Food (Planting, butchering and/or hunting, etc.), more Booze and Security.  And booze.  Do NOT worry about Trade Goods or any other industry until you have (most) everyone calmed down.

Also, start happiness projects.  Zoos, statue gardens, waterfalls.  You need more happy thoughts.

check out dwarf therapist - trialled it on monday evening - single best detail? being able to view the happiness of my dwarves. it's given as a number but they are also grouped in happiness bands. very easy to spot who is happy enough to do work etc, and who needs some spa/rest/relaxation/happiness treatment....

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Plate mail or chain mail ?

I've got a champion hammerlord with layered HFS metal goodies and a HFS hammer and an artifact buckler. I had to give him a squad all to himself to keep him from sparring with anyone.
Does this actually work? My soldiers constantly spar with each other, despite not being in the same squad.

i think shadowex3 must mean he put him in his own squad and stationed him somewhere so that the others sparred and the champ was out the way....because otherwise, yes, if he was off-duty, he would go and spar, and everyone would be happy and limbless.

"urist mcnewbie is ecstatic. urist admired an artifact buckler. urist admired a very fine warhammer.
urist has been hammered to death."

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fortress Trader shirking responsibilities
« on: August 19, 2009, 04:22:50 am »
it might also be worth toggling off statue gardens and zoos when the trader is required at the depot - stopping giving him options of places to waste time/the potential for a party to start.

furthermore, caging of animals will often take precedence over trading (like everything else!) so don't do any animal caging. oh, also, if you haven't, i recommend turning harvesting to 'only farmers harvest' on the 'o'rders menu...stops urist mctardytrader from being distracted.

if it honestly does take him too long to get to the depot, you might as a further, tertiary step, consider relocating the depot to a location closer to your food supplies, or making his bedroom right by the depot (as already suggested by Haven, humorously) to cut down walking times....obviously this depends on fortress layout.

The quote from the wiki says that they will never spar. Shooting at an archery range gets done the same amount as sparring, and could be thought of as similar in the game engine.

that's true - i always assumed (big no no there) that they may be "invaluable as a marksdwarf" implied they could still get "shooting at archery range". certainly i have promoted a couple of spine-injured dwarves to being marksdwarves before....but maybe i've got it wrong, and in fact, the injury will in some case stop training. except that after she received the injury, she then fired at least one shot, to gain 'dabbling marksdwarf' hmmmmmm.

Anyway, try changing his weapon setup to just a crossbow, no buckler or armour at all.
will try this in about 12 hours when i'm back.

hey, there a bazillion newbies without the ability to use the search function, but this is a special and unusual case because it's not that you've forgotten anything, just that something is wrong.
cheers!

We hate you for far different reasons, Z, and for so many of them.   ;) ;D
yay, multiple hatreds!

the ol' squad juggle eh? i tried something like that yesterday, but i will try again...thanks for the tip. and the speed of your reply. and the lack of "i hate you for asking another marksdwarf question" in your response.

...it's a marksdwarf question! yay! but with a bit of a twist. explanation:

new immigrants rock up. 6 get drafted into a new expanding military. 5 spar up to wrestler quite quickly, but one, bomrek, stays as a recruit. quick check of her wounds - she's got a bruised (brown) spine. 'that's fine', says i, 'i was gonna make a couple of marksdwarves anyway'. quick check of the wiki on 'wound' and 'marksdwarf' suggested:
Quote
Wounds to the nervous system (the neck, brain, or spine) will never heal. If these wounds are not too severe the dwarf will be able to continue his daily routine without any problems. Military dwarves with nervous wounds will never spar, however. Melee dwarves with nervous injuries may still be valulable as a Marksdwarf.
all good. then:

1. bomrek switched to crossbow.
2. bomrek collects quiver and bow.
3. ample supply of bone and wood bolts checked - none forbidden, all accessible.
4. bomrek's hands checked - all clear, nothing held.
5. bomrek's status checked - standing down.
6. archery range checked - all functioning fine.
7. personality checked - no obvious laziness - one thing of note: "bomrek prefers others to take the initiative".

Tosid, the other dwarf who is to become a marksdwarf, gets on training, fairly quickly. Bomrek fires a shot or two - dabbling marksdwarf. then nothing. for 3 months. she wanders about a bit, takes a lot of breaks. At first, she was in a squad under Tosid. After a while, I moved her into her own squad to see if that made a difference. It didn't. I tried deactivating her, and she immediately scurried off to find work, but on reactivation, she basically froze to where she was for a while, before then maybe walking to take a break. slowly. direly slowly. my question, in multiple parts:
  • is the spine wound stopping her train as a marksdwarf, contrary to wiki information and my own experience with other dorfs?
  • is it something to do with bomrek's personality that is making her so slow at training? she is failing to take the initiative?
  • am i forgetting something really obvious?
  • could it be to do with a natural preference against being in the military?
  • am i over thinking this?

thank you in advance for help - apologies for yet another marksdwarf query - i felt because this wasn't the standard 'how do i get them to train?' question i should ask...although it sort of is. **hangs head in shame**

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A workshop clutter and stockpile problem
« on: August 18, 2009, 03:55:12 am »
you are relatively new, so you may not be doing this, but are you hiding the mined out stone? take a look at the stockpiles with 'k' and see if there is stone mined out there (hidden or otherwise). that blocks slots in furniture stockpiles (as it does in some other stockpiles...stone for instance) so do check that the reason the buckets/barrels are not being moved is not that the space is blocked in some way....

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Sorted Skill List?

i'll give this a wangle later today and let you know my thoughts...

Yeah, that's why I said the HFS challenge would need to have clear rules. In a survival challenge, I still want to see how a community overcomes survival and prospers, even within a set of artificial guidelines. I'll also say that relying solely on a z screen for judging is not fun. We did that with the wealth challenge a while back where everyone embarked on the same map with nothing but a wagon and had to have the greatest wealth after 2 years. It was a fun survival in the first year (creating enough wealth from 3 logs, berries and spider webs to buy a pick, axe, etc.), but there was only one path to greatest wealth. Either you optimized that path (fastest route to HFS, best means to convert adamantine to wealth), or you didn't. There really wasn't much else to the challenge. It was a good idea, but the players needed more avenues to pursue to be fun.

Ensuring that there is judging for creativity, aesthetics, epicness, etc. is important, IMO. It ensures a diversity of results.

ah yes, let me clarify - i didn't mean solely using a z screen, but using a z screen plus map, plus selected screen shots etc.... that way things like creativity, aesthetics, epicness can be evaluated.

Happiness: Well, on one hand my wife was brutally mauled to death and eaten by skeletal carp, but on the other I just ate in a REALLY NICE dining room.

Longevity: How long can you survive?

on these two, two points. 1 - hard to evaluate happiness unless each and every judge can access each save and scroll through each dwarf's thoughts and preferences - unless i'm missing an easier way of gauging happines?
2 - longevity, while a great challenge, might be difficult for this competition, by virtue of the fact some people have far more time to play than others, and part of adding a time frame (5 game years, for example) was to provide a framework within which fortresses could be fairly judged.
don't mean to sound overly negative, keep the ideas flowing i say! (also, am tempted to go start a fortress in as hard a location as possible just to test out that longevity idea....)

358
i'd just note from the point of view of adjudication, it is worth having something that can be seen on a map or 'z' screen to be actually judged. that could mean posting a 'z' screen of when one only has one dwarf left in the case of survival, but for the river-cross challenge the bridge was something that could be evaluated and scored. a survival challenge will be lotsafun but it's worth having clearly 'judgable' goals.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Automatic butcher/slaughter?
« on: August 15, 2009, 01:59:56 pm »
on the off-chance that this has been overlooked unintentionally rather than intentionally - one can assign which creatures to butcher with the 'b' key if you enter the 'animals' list under the 'z' screen. 'z' - 'enter' - then scroll and 'b' each creature you want to go. i use that method to maintain a healthy food-supplying amount of breeding pairs, while getting rid of excess (including, of course, kittens).
