DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mandate...
« on: July 08, 2009, 06:41:48 pm »
except if you don't have a guard at all, the hammerer continues to do nothing. He only acts if the assigned guard doesn't do their job. If there's no guard assigned, he doesn't have a job to not do. And the hammerer spends his whole day getting drunk and partying.

i've never had a bad thing happen from missing the mandates, and never having a police force to enforce them. It's a minor unhappy thought that the dining rooms and gourmet food totally obliterate.

designate a meeting area outside but secure.
Or, (my way) make the lobby of your bedroom apartments "outside" & "light" by channeled out the z-levels above. dorfs that wants to get out from their bedroom will surely passed the place.

I did this once, thinking the same thing.

Then a siege showed up. Per modus operandi, I ordered Only Soldiers can go Outside. Some dwarves were caught in their bedrooms at the time. They were not pleased. Neither was I, since none of them could work while holed up in their rooms afraid to go 'outside'.

I'd recommend your sunbathing room not be somewhere critical. Stick a statue garden or a zoo outside. Not your booze supply. Unless you don't need to use the Outside commands to keep your dwarfs from wandering drunkily into a squad of marks gobbos.

you may have dug in at an aquifer, which sucks if you're new.
Does that imply that there's a time when an aquifer doesn't suck?
I actually like aquifers, and I usually make sure that my fortress has at least one biome with an aquifer, and at least one biome without one.

The trick is getting below the aquifer.

you can find corpses from the stock menu. it's near the bottom of the list, so just hit up once and there's corpses. hit tab on it to find the specific corpse and zoom in on it. Kinda useless once it's been moved though

So that when archeologists unearth this thread, they won't mark you down as completely crazy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Straaaange human guildmaster behaviour.
« on: July 01, 2009, 07:06:37 pm »
the one time my guildmaster died (no idea how, just keeled over), the humans sieged me. Didn't really care since I didn't need anything and it was amusing to watch them run in terror from my 4 wrestlers.
