add CAN_LEARN to donkeys and then butcher one through designation.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: an "end party" lever?

the issue with a lever based system of ending parties is that no one will the lever because they'll be too busy partying.

they have all of the downsides of being a dwarf with none of the upsides. they consume resources while producing none of their own.

i never activate my justice system so i ignore their mandates all day long with no ill effects but unhappy nobles. And I don't really care if the nobles are unhappy, they don't do anything.

this dude has been tooling around for 6 years with a mangled lung. I may be wrong about other internals, but I know that lung is never getting better.

mangled injuries can heal, if they're healable at all. A mangled arm or leg will eventually heal. A mangled lung, though, will stay mangled forever. And the dwarf won't stop to rest either. I've had a dwarf with a mangled lung since year 1, and he just keeps on truckin', flashin that medical symbol wherever he goes. It helps that he's a legendary stonecrafter, and extremely tough or tougher. I forget exactly.

Injured internals won't heal. Injured externals will.

Fortifications don't provide floors, and walls that have been carved into fortifications have solid floors.

if you want to shoot through the floor, you'll need to use grates or bars.

A wall of paper, to keep out rock.
A wall of rock, to keep out scissors.
A wall of scissors, to keep out paper.

I have deconstructed every joke in this thread into it's most primitive form. Except the infinite recursion wall.

Does that forbid corpses as well?

Either way, I think being able to zoom to a corpse is a useful trick to know.

it does.

And being able to zoom to a corpse is good for figuring out wtf killed him. Before the body gets moved anyway.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A question of embark and multiplication.

there's nothing in the raws to suggest this. a 150 year old dwarf is as healthy and virile as the Child who just grew into a Peasant, unless something is hard-coded in.

You are going to want to give them some time off to get to know each other.

Don't think there's a way of knowing how old a dwarf is, at all. I assume it's random, since the dwarves are generated on the spot.

and that's a 1x1 square that's safe to dig through. increase dimensions as you see fit.

When you enter criteria to embark, is it possible to skip the first correct candidate and check the second?

Nope. One of the limitations of the current site finder.

actually, it is. put a fortress there and then abandon. It's now an invalid site.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stagnant Human Siege
« on: February 15, 2010, 03:08:05 pm »
yes, this is expected behavior. Humans will sit there and do nothing for long periods when they come to siege, accomplishing nothing but keeping your outside operations from happening.

I've found it's just easier to sic the champion squads on them. They scatter like a kitten after 10 z-levels at the mere sight of a champion.

Goblins are the only race that wait until 80 to siege. Everyone else will siege before then if you've pissed them off enough.

it's a feature built into the game for exactly this purpose.

so you make them interesting with elaborate death traps.

my favorite is a set of pressure plate linked bridges over water. I just sit back and cackle as orcs try to run across, only to fall to their dooms after someone makes it a 3rd of the way in. And when the survivors wise up and don't step on the bridge, repeating spikes!

a goblin squad took one (1) casualty, and then fled for the hills.

Dammit! I wanted that goblinite!

I guess that's what I get for only letting one orc out of the 4 squads that came survive. Well, I didn't really let him, he was just the only one smart enough not to stand on the spike traps. Or the weapon traps. Or on the give-away bridge his fearless leader tried to lead him on to. So I guess he earned the right to stay alive.
