So a siege of gobbos shows up. No problem, I order everyone inside and raise the drawbridge. However, I notice a single dwarf outside still, showing no signs they'll be going inside soon. They have a flashing yellow down arrow, so I take a look.

It's a baby. A lone baby roaming around outside my fortress. The baby is starving. I look through it's relationships for it's mother. The mother has been in bed for the past 3 or 4 seasons for an arm wound.

Now, directly outside my fort are a few small natural lakes. After losing a champion to one of these monsters, I carved a ramp so they could get out. Well, guess where this baby ended up. Right in the drink. I was prepared to write this one off to natural selection when a miracle happened. The baby, drowning, swam to the ramp and pulled itself out. I was floored.

...Miracle averted. it fell into another lake. Paddled around to the ramp, then away, and then drowned. Oh, Cerol Rakustoslan, your life had hardly yet begun.

honestly, I've found aquifers to be pretty awesome, once you got the procedure for busting a hole through them down. Unlimited source and disposal of water? Yes please. Perfect for drowning traps, power needs, what have you.

tbh, this doesn't seem that hard. You seem to be overestimating how much space a dwarf needs. Unless I counted my squares wrong, with my normal bedroom set up (Living Pods), I can fit 16x9 or 144 dwarves on a single z-level. With room to spare on the floor for whatever else. Workshops, storage, w/e.

actually, that doesn't seem right. 11x11 fits 16 rooms. you can stuff 16 of those in a 48x48 space. so that's 256 rooms on a single floor and you only need 2 z levels.

the economy was just activated in one of my forts. Whatever, I have 0 rent on so I don't have to deal with that nastiness.

after a while, I notice that one couple has a cabinet and a chest. They are the only ones with a cabinet and chest that aren't nobility. They appropriated it (both are legendary) and had them built all on their own. I didn't know they could even do that.

Nice work.  My question, though...

Is a dwarf capable of socializing with more than one other dwarf at a time?  If you get three idle dwarves, do two socialize while the third sits there with no friend but his beard?  Or do all three socialize, and is the experience gain rate faster or slower?

I had one fort with like 20 idlers at all times, and some of them were legendary in a couple of years.

heck, I got a fort in year 3 with a legendary Child. She could only have been here 2 years.

Why shouldn't you? They make the fortress seem complete, keeping your dwarves in order and all that.

because when you fail a mandate, they're the ones that punish the dwarf. Either with jail time or beatings, all of which cause the dwarf to be useless for a time. On top of the already useless dwarves serving in the guard.

I never have a fortress guard and there's never been a time where I say 'i wish i had some of them guards around!'

the issue is less where they're getting from and more that they're getting water at all. Work on booze production so they don't go drinking from the stream.

Also, make sure the well water isn't tainted.

Actually, it's not 1/3 of the components, but 1/10th of the MATERIAL_SIZE of the item (which gets divided by 3 to determine the number of bars required to make), which works out to 30% of the materials rather than 33.3%.

it varies below with objects below 1 bar to make. you can make pants all day (i think it's pants) and then melt them down for half a bar.
