Other Games / Re: I'm looking for a game that plays like Paper Mario

I guess Espers/Materia/Gambits/Jobs whatever are kind of similar to the badge system, but I assume the OP is aware of the Final Fantasy series and it isn't what they're looking for.

It's fairly short and easy, but Double Fine's Costume Quest does this.

Ooh, yes. Highly recommend. Very similar Action-Commands and character loadout building. Very charming presentation and dialogue, but yeah, short and easy. I'm amazed it didn't occur to me.

My first thought is that this would make for some fun tabletop RPing. My second thought is that it would be a nightmare to design since 99% of people have no idea what to do when Space Shuttle Component X malfunctions. Because they are not rocket scientists. The further you abstract it (Problem X requires 4-8 hours and a Piloting score of 17 or better to remedy) the less engaging it sounds, but the more specific it is (there is a tear in the aft external thermal seal panels, what do?) the less accessible it becomes. Maybe there is a balance to be found but it'll be a tough one to manage.

Bioshock 1 + 2, the entire time I was playing.
Zelda OoT, back in the day.
Tetris, way back in the day.
The beginning of Resident Evil 4, before it becomes shooting zombies with rocket launchers.
F-Zero GX, in which I finish races only to realize I haven't blinked the whole time.
Team Fortress 2, if the teams are balanced.
Civilization 2 + 4, just one more turn, I mean it this time.

The framing of the shot makes me unsure what the focal point is supposed to be. A wider shot would emphasize the vastness of the terrain. A close up would shift the focus to one or both of the two characters. Right now it's an incredibly conservative shot. The framing also gives roughly equal weight to all the elements, the sunset, shadow-creature, and protagonist each dominate a vertical third of the page. Overall if makes it look very static and doesn't really get much across regarding what's going on.

Two very quick examples of shifting the focus to the characters to make the image more dynamic:

OK, not perfect, but each imply something different about the confrontation and have more action than a straightforward semi-wide shot.

Am I the only one who found Titan Quest unplayably dull? It's got a decent metacritic score, but looking into it a bit all the reviews seem to say "It's like Diablo and it's, uh, not bad, I guess? 8/10!" Anyway, I bought it at a prior sale, and was extremely disappointed with the purchase.

Just sayin.

Way to go Indie Royale! Finally a bundle that I'm excited to buy rather than one I begrudgingly shell out for. I've had a hankering for a classic FPS lately too. Dem wacky Indie ones look fun too.

I find it sad, but the server was empty 99% of the time. It would have been cool if we had had more events with it, especially with the influx of F2P players, but shutting it down is probably a good call at this point.

It was always fun when I got a chance to actually play with you dudes though. Even across an ocean's worth of ping.

In other news, new TF2 themed avatar.

Other Games / Re: A Game of Dwarves
« on: January 23, 2012, 05:53:38 am »
At first I thought, "Oh this thread again. A game that's not DF features dwarves, and they dig. Cue the B12 rage and inevitable comparisons." And then I saw this.

hallo all! super fun to see all the feedback. some of you might know me as the creator for dwarf!?. im the game director for a game of dwarves. im writing this from my mobile from the paradox event. there are lots of other info coming about the game both from reporters here and in due time from us at zeal(yes I both work for zeal an power of two). hope to hear some more great feedback as we get closer to realese! take care  :)

Now, I'm not trying to be rude, this is a serious question. Did you get the job working on A Game of Dwarves because of your work on Dwarfs!? Or do you just have a strange fascination with games about Dwarves? Do you have any plans for your next project, and if so, will it involve Dwarves?

Creative Projects / Re: Request an Avatar thread!

I have the exact avatar I want to use in my computer, but I get an error when I try to upload it.

If you want assistance, some key details to include might be what type of file it is, where you are trying to upload it, and which error you receive. With the information provided all I can conclude is that you're doing it wrong.

This topic inspired me to finally change my avatar since I haven't even watched One Piece in forever.

I made it myselfs.

Newt Gengrich gets standing ovation for cheating on wives.

For all the terrible things I could say about him, I have to admit, that dude is the goddamn master of spin. The condescending arrogance angle is working surprisingly well for him. When he led out with "No, but I will." The first thing I thought of was this response in which he also got a standing ovation, this time for refusing to apologize for or even acknowledge racist comments. The second thing I thought of was this:

Except it fucking IS reasonable. I know, because I've done it. I've done it for years. I know other people who've done it for years. Many people in our country get by perfectly fucking fine without a car. I don't see why I should have to justify something that is so fucking obvious on account of how it happens all the time.
You're talking to someone who has also done so.

No, it is not. Not where I live, at least.

And that's basically what it comes down to. I've gotten by fine for the vast majority of my adult life happily without one, only getting one after moving to a town with abysmal public transit. But derail much?

Creative Projects / Re: The Leaky D20, a Harry Potter screencap comic
« on: January 21, 2012, 03:37:22 pm »
That was something that always bothered me about Harry Potter- I can see the pureblood wizards not thinking of mundane solutions to their problems, but the Muggleborn should really be more up on all that. Magic doesn't stop bullets, and you can shoot faster than you can swish and flick!
I always treated it like the "Why doesn't Buffy face up against demons with guns?" thing. It just isn't part of the setting.

It's been a long time, but didn't she blow up a demon with a rocket launcher? Your right though, it's kind of a convention in lots of modern fantasy that no one ever thinks "man, a gun would be really helpful right now".

I still don't understand how playing nest Engineer is any fun. You basically sit there and whack things with your wrench. Teleporter, dispenser, sentry, spy, etc.

Playing Engi the way the class was designed to be played is boring. Aggro-Engi with mini-sentries and frontier justice is fun. Ninjaneer placing teles behind enemy lines is fun. And most fun of all, Surprise Nonconformist Engie, completely ignoring chokepoints and placing level 3 sentries around random corners covering random healthpacks. That last one is best with alltalk on, so you can hear the other team scream "WHY IS THAT THERE." You can even get pretty decent kills this way, because nobody expects it and they're less motivated to coordinate their team to destroy it than they are if you're nesting at a chokepoint.

Started a new character, Enutrof's are way more fun. Anyone down for grouping? I'm snowed in today.

Kinseti - TaroTaro - Enutrof - Suifokia - Nox

Also, 2 questions: How do I get citizen points, and what do I do with all the vendor-trash my prospector skill gets me? It seems useless.

One more thing, Fire, Air, Earth... What happened to water?

Presumably your class doesn't get water spells. I started a Feca character, who lack Air. Maybe all classes only get 3/4 elements?

Speaking of Feca, it took me forever to learn their convoluted magic system. I can place Glyphs or Armour any adjacent square, and each spell has 3 effects - one regular cast-on-enemy type effect, an effect that targets anyone beside the Glyph (after you cast it on a glyph), and a buff or debuff effect if you cast it on armour. Unfortunately, the Glyph and Armour effects are unimpressive, take an extra turn to set up, and last a very short time. Heal 1% of HP per round until I take 3 hits? Not actually that useful :[

Game seems cool, but I'm still undecided. I'll have to try partying-up and see if it's more fun.
