It appears that we may want to toss the kids in with a random, expendable dwarf for a year or so, so that they all learn to love him, then throw them in their pods, give them plenty of Poultry to murder, and execute the man.
Maybe do that with SEVERAL expendables.

In fact, in late Fortresses, that may be ALL he engraves.
But then, in late Fortresses, you rarely have anything LEFT to Engrave.
..Still waiting for someone to engrave all 3 Caverns.

  I've observed that if you embark, dig down to magma, abandon fort, and start a new fort anywhere else in the world, then your civ already knows about magma and you can make working magma forges.

You'd actually want Mountains for that-Some of the Optimal spots give you access to all the above-ground stuff, plus allowing you to figure out all the metalworking, and your mining techniques.

Actually, it's PROBABLY because there's stone on top of where you want a designation.
And Dwarves actually have a slight delay to doing things, especially in larger forts.

^ if red is a Volcano. If a Dark Grey, and somewhat Thicker it's a peak.
Anything that has the symbol of a tree in-game and is green is a vanilla forest.
Blue lines are rivers. Blue dots are lakes. Blue squigglies are oceans.
The various ns on the map are hills, doesn't matter the color. Although I guess that affects vegetation and such. I don't really care that much, come to think of it.
The whole huge things of cyan at the bottom are pretty much ice-oceans and tundra.
I'm missing something.

I'm honestly thinking of heavily modding one of my three copies of .25(One's a Human version, a Dwarf Version, and a Backup version.)

Emplace a limit where I will only allow 5+ for each industry(Excluding Farming, Medical and Hunting.)
If that limit is reached, and I get dwarves with those skills, they are placed into the Military, and, depending on their weapons and squad, are given one of the four jobs:
Mining for Pick squads,
Mason/Farming for Squads not using Picks or Crossbows,
Hunting for Crossbows.

Even the NOBLES are placed in the Military.
