Back in 40d, you could forbid the items while in the workshop and then unforbid them again in order to make a more exciting artifact.  I haven't tried it in 31 yet, because I'm producing way too much wealth anyway, so I don't know if it still works.

I tend not to do this anyway, unless I've already got the stuff forbidden (like gems).  Moods are supposed to be the innermost expression of a dwarf's dwarfiness, of their individuality, and so they should use what they want to use, I think.

And yeah, this is one of those "you JUST figured this out?" topics, but no worries; People don't talk about the old stuff much!

Is there any way to breed certain animals other than killing all but two? It's not as if you can lock two black dogs in a room and hope they mate, what with spores and all that stuff.

Cages will prevent further spores from emerging from the creature or arriving at it.

Well, within two years I'm out of gems without exploratory mining, so there's that.  I love me some gems. 

Plus, isn't exploratory mining necessary for large numbers of artifacts?

PS: If Toady has been kidnapped who is joining the rescue party? I have some guns but we will need more. And alcohol.

I'll join if you give me time to stand in the barracks for a few months slowly becoming a legendary fighter and a Master of whatever weapon you give me.

(I'm a dabbling knife user, and I have some low quality wooden training weapons!)

I kinda figured that out fairly quickly on my own. I still wonder from time to time why stairs are built in two sections a time.
Not only that, said floor only matters if its constructed!
[I'd say that the dwarfen tendency to leave themselves stranded on the wrong side of a wall is a more annoying problem they have.
...and why are you building floors anyway? Dwarfs work best when underground, not in some artificial aboveground construct. Why do you think they throw up when they leave the confines of their underground adobes and stray into the light of a callous and uncaring sun?]

Caverns maybe?

At least in 40d, creatures landing on other creatures took no damage.  So the solution is a pillow of kittens being dropped, followed by your soldiers.

Though kittens might lead to a tantrum spiral when they shatter on impact or get killed by the siegers; try a less useful damning creature.  Maybe mules.

I give them ~1000 as a matter of course.  10000 when I'm strapped for a use for trade goods because there are so damn many of them in my fort. 

Maybe I should redistribute the labor after a few years...

What's happened to them?  Liaisons today?

-- What my question actually is, is this: Will they ever be replaced now?  I think that they're supposed to be, but I"m not sure.  On my last two or three forts, I've lost the liaison pretty quick.  I just now lost him -- possibly soon before he was going to upgrade me to a Barony -- to a goblin ambush.  Which is better than last time, when He showed up and then my leader never scheduled the "Conduct Meeting" labor.  I eventually found his rotting corpse on the edge of the map where the caravan had spawned.  When I got around to making statues, one of them turned out to be an image of him "withering away."  After something went wrong -- I don't recall what -- I checked legends.  Sure enough, he had died of old age in my fort.

Anyway.  Will they get replaced, like in-fort nobles don't, or am I slowly making this world barren of liaisons and thus barons?
