DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dull but worthy site available
« on: September 03, 2009, 12:22:00 pm »
Thanks to JM for checking. I'll add the site has a lot of semiprecious gems, and lots of colored ore in addition to green: yellow, red, cyan and some blue here and there. And no aquifer anywhere.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dull but worthy site available
« on: September 02, 2009, 02:27:23 pm »
I found an embark site that may lack the flash and dazzle of some, but would be perfect for anyone just starting out with DF, or for anyone who needs a calm location for constructing a megaproject. There is no chasm or pit, no HFS and no underground water sources, but in a 6x6 embark it has just about everything else:

Temperate untamed wilds. Sand. Flux. Bauxite. Diorite, Quartzite, Gabbro, and Granite. Coal and lignite. A fish-filled river. Lots of turtle-ponds and innocuous land-based wildlife ready for hunting. A lava tube. Mostly heavily forested, gradual elevation shifts with a steep mountainous corner if you desire true height. Tons of copper, iron, silver and platinum, along with every other metal except, it appears, gold and lead. (If someone wants to run Reveal or whatever its called, cool, but I prefer to remain unspoiled.)

Access to all civilizations, but so far the goblins have been pretty anemic, with just one paltry siege after several years of play. (Obviously, this can be good or bad..) Did have one dragon turn up.

The red Xs mark the spot.
You'll probably want to jigger the exact site around, depending on where you want to have the river and lava. The sand is to the north and west. A small tab of granite sticks in from west.

2. I believe they have to actually get hit with the spray from the falls to be comforted by it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your first fortress
« on: August 26, 2009, 11:50:15 pm »
On my very first attempt, I embarked, hit pause, and... stared. I hit a few buttons, stared some more, and quietly abandoned.

So, I wasn't the only one, huh?  :)

I've already forgotten what my first "real" fortress was finally like. The earliest save I still have is functioning, but is a cluttered, sloppy mess.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf names
« on: August 24, 2009, 06:14:46 pm »
I always name mine roughly after their assigned tasks; the first seven all start with B, (Burrow, Buzz, Boss..) because I could think of appropriate names. Yes, I know I could change their job titles instead, but this way I can 1) remember at a glance what they are supposed to be doing, and 2) when the place gets to swarming, know that I was the one who assigned them to do it. Peasants don't get nicknames, which as a bonus makes for a nice class distinction, while the military is Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.

Does the broker's personality effect all this? If you choose someone who is efficient and doesn't procrastinate, will s/he be more likely to get the job done?

DF Gameplay Questions / Virgin kitten birth?!
« on: August 21, 2009, 01:26:53 pm »
I brought one cat along with me on embark for anti-vermin patrol. I did not buy any more. Suddenly, while I'm still working with just my original seven dwarfs, there's a birth annoucement and I've got three kittens running around. Is it possible that some merchants brought a pet cat with them? Or can a cat arrive at the fortress pregnant?

My mayor recently demanded that I make two anvils. I obliged, then discovered that my jeweler had decorated one of them a couple of times. Hint for the day: merchants really like jewel-encrusted anvils..

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How did you find out about DF?
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:04:20 pm »
I've forgotten already, even though I came to it relatively recently. It might have been through TVTropes. I know I tried it a couple of times and immediately gave up, before finally reading a few tutorials and getting hooked.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Thoughts and Preferences

The only ones I really pay attention to are: assigning someone who likes art to be stonecrafter, and not choosing a total nervous wreck to be leader.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Help with floodgates.

Yeah I figured, but it's tough cause I can't find a spot that fits my asthetically pleasing idea of a fortress.

Set up four symmetrical levers in that central area, and don't hook the extras to anything.

I'm another relative newbie, and whack out chambers with wild abandon. I actually wouldn't mind seeing the cave-in threat added back, if the danger size was upped a little higher than 7x7.

Amen to that. Thanks for the help. Its too bad he got roughed up by four zombie magma imps and is now sleeping his life away. Lesson learned though, keep traps by your magma forges.

Even better, block your magma source with a fire-proof wall-grate.

General Discussion / Re: CNN: You're full of shit.

When I checked the CNN website this morning, they were giving a platform to the "Moon Landing Was A Hoax" morons.  :(

1. Try looking at her preferences, and, if possible, making a chest (ie "box") out of whatever material she likes.

2. I don't think there's a hard and fast rule. There are four different types of shops, if you want one of each.
