DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Do you know what the HFS is? (spoiler-free)
« on: November 19, 2010, 11:48:58 am »
This whole spoiler thing completely ruined my game. Once I heard there was delicious cotton candy and happy clowns down below I immediately started digging to find it. What I found wasn't candy. It wasn't candy at all!

I think they do slightly more damage. At least it seemed that way when I threw them. Daggers are better for throwing, though.

Last I heard, Toady's working on caravans as we speak, but I'm not sure if he's doing anything regarding adventure mode or not.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Focused or mixed weapon skills?

I usually stick to swords and throwing.  Throwing the copper dagger that comes stock with my character is a great way to soften up enemies before they get a chance to attack.

There may be something to forgoing any weapon skills and putting more points into fighting.  This way if you find a really good weapon you won't have to worry as much about whether or not you're skilled in using it. I might try that with my next character.

Amazing... I slayed a cougar, sneaked into a dragon's lair and stole a bunch of gold coins, killed many a wolf...then managed to get both my feet bitten off by a deer. I crawled back to the nearest town and retired.

With a battlecry I immediately attack the bear with my bone mace. "Your skin is mine!"

I search the zoo for the bear.

I use my mace to finish off the last of the guards.

I let out a massive roar to strike fear in the hearts of my enemies!

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress: The Development Page

There's been some discussion about studded weapons since the big update earlier this year. Specifically I'm wondering if, for example, a silver mace studded with lead would do more damage than a normal silver mace due to the added weight?

Have you confirmed that there's an actual weight difference?  As far as I know, there isn't.  Decorations like studs are immaterial, or more precisely, they're nothing but a material.

I'm not sure if there's a way to confirm it or not but based on some of the discussions I've heard it's a common belief that there may be a difference in weight. It may be too small of a unit to be represented in game which would also suggest the damage difference would be very slight. Honestly I haven't done much testing in this area. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

This offends my delicate American sensibilities. If there's no gratuitous violence involved it shouldn't even be in this game. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go turn right on red.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Some love for Speardwarves
« on: November 05, 2010, 02:25:47 pm »
There may be something to this. I just did some basic tests of two dwarves in bronze armor, both competent in all combat skills, one with a bronze battleaxe and one with a bronze spear. Out of three tests the dwarf with the bronze spear came out on top. It seems the spear does a much better job of penetrating armor.

Close off your fort. Find a cavern that has water. Dig out a cistern adjacent to the water but instead of digging into the damp stone to let the water in, smooth it then carve a fortification into it. This will allow the passage of water but will also prevent most critters and FBs from getting through. Designate the cistern as a water source and a fishing zone and activate the fishing and fish cleaning labors on two or three dwarves. This should be enough to keep your dwarves from dieing but you'll need to figure out how to get some booze production going to keep them productive and happy.
