DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Adventure Mode In V47
« on: January 15, 2024, 03:16:42 am »
I mean, uh. Ever since the introduction of the force and the VERY bias impact on size on combat, it really does feel like if the opponent is bigger than you then they have an extraordinarily high chance of killing you no matter how skilled or geared you are.

Before the introduction of force on combat, it was possible to play pretty much anything, but now it basically just boils down to "Pick Elephant Man into Vampire or savescum" because you could be a legendary +25 Elf but if a Night Creature (Not even a Roc, not even a Giant Wolf, just a regular old night freak) bites you, you cannot break that latch and you're going to die.

It never used to be this way you know.

Every time Toady reworks Combat I find myself less satisfied. Ranged combat has been overpowered since like 2006, whips have been overpowered since 2010, neither have been fixed. Yet because of 'realism' gameplay takes the L every time, Adventure Mode's basically unplayable; and that's a real shame because there's some cool stuff in there like divination and findable artifacts, but I basically have to go back to Masterwork Dwarf Fortress Legacy just so I can have gear that doesn't rip into tiny pieces on my first fight.

I've made countless overpowered adventurers, all the way back to 40d - back when navigating towns wasn't an FPS tank and shopping was super intuitive, to when the disgustingly borked bogeymen were first introduced and with careful gearing I conquered them solo too - to when bogeymen were taken away after many years...

And it's only now, that force impact is in, equipment wear is in, the horribly half baked and obtuse newbie-player-filter conversation system is in that I can safely say -

I'm no longer having fun with Adventure Mode. Like at all.

I feel almost obligated to make the biggest size adventurer I can because if I get unlucky I just die regardless of any armour or dodging I have - there's so many animal people but so few of them actually are even remotely viable, I can make an Elephant Man right now and go to the nearest shrine and roll a dice until I'm a vampire and conquer the world - yet I can put hours upon hours into an Elf Adventurer only to be killed by some mook because size > all if you get a grab of any kind.

And yet paradoxically I go through tons of fights where I break every single limb and spinal cord of my opponent systematically for them only to not die and just roll the dice on whether or not I get tendon maimed or not even though they're crippled (That's always cool - remember 40d when you could heal that without divination RNG? Was good for gameplay me thinks, even though it made no sense realistically)

What do you guys think? I personally think Adventure Mode peaked in V34.

DF Suggestions / Good Biomes should be "Owned" by gods
« on: January 02, 2018, 12:42:44 am »
To be specific - every good biome is essentially 'blessed' by a certain god - when you make a fortress there, you are in effect squatting on his/her territory.

Though mayors can make some obnoxious mandates at times; gods will demand very specific things of you in return for prospering in their own little Garden of Eden, anything from certain value or material statues/figurines of them, to very ornate throne rooms dedicated to themselves so they can take on a form (If applicable, like for example "Takes the form of a male goat person") and actually live in your fortress itself.

The more spicy gods will make demands like sacrificing the odd child or two to a magma pit.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This'll also allow buffs to good biomes without just plain making them 'easy mode'.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dumping is murdering my dwarves
« on: December 04, 2013, 11:54:28 pm »
So I started my new fortress after coming back from a year or so not playing, I get my fortress laid out, blah blah, etc etc. I set a garbage dump to a small hole in the corner of my fortress ( Like I always have since 40d ) and it was only when I checked combat reports that my farmer somehow had a {Limestone} hit him in the skull and jam his skull through his brain.

So I had no idea what the hell just happened, I put the dude in a box and assumed it was some sort of really weird glitch...Suddenly all my dwarves have injuries from loads of different rocks, and I was really confused by all this but then I realized: They're probably throwing the rocks into the dump, inadvertantly stoning one another in some hysterical dwarven retardation.

Is this intentional? And is there any way of storing stone and other junk without having to make a 1000x1000 stockpile or my dwarves playing dodgeball with boulders?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Flaming Kobold Marksmen Ninjas
« on: July 26, 2012, 11:21:45 am »

Nope, not even superhuman agility, legendary agility and a kill list of a 100 or so bogeymen will save you from a catnap in the forest. One turn kill. noone messes with kobolds. Not even Chuck Norris.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Armour Skill V Dodging
« on: December 31, 2011, 07:21:18 am »
Recently I lost a legendary armour skill unit to a small skirmish squad, whilst the talented dodger companion survived for about ten times longer, even when knocked to the ground several times.

I've also noted that I always pick high dodging with adventurers; I've never seen my armour deflect much more than a punch or two, dodging has always saved my life a hundred more times than armour skill ever has.

I'm curious though, has anyone here ever saw a time where armour skill did better than dodging, or do you guys believe its worthless like I do?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Cave creatures love overground. Wait what?
« on: September 19, 2010, 08:47:55 am »
I was just going on a rampage killing my old fortress's migrants when I found the oddest things. Potential spoilers.

I found three Lizard Monsters casually walking around above ground without me even breaking them out of hell, this alone is quite odd but I also "Spotted a giant cave spider" ( Though I never actually found it it DID fight some Dwarves so I assume it was walking around sunning it up and killing as well )

I bumped into a Jabberer too, I at first assumed Demons got out with my Fortress since they were humanoid or something but apparently that's not it at all. I'll post a video to show this, it seems to have something to do with them having names.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Indestructidwarf
« on: August 20, 2010, 07:42:53 pm »
I was playing on a newer version of DF, I had just left a fortress and reclaimed it out of interest to see if there'd be any cavern monsters walking the corridors.

I was pretty unlucky: The very entrance to the caverns had a troll waiting for me. Before I could order my dwarves to safety, most of them charged the antagonizing attacker, alas it was all in vain, they had only their clothes and no combat experience at all, only one had an axe with him and even he couldn't effectively use it in battle.

It looked bleak for the Dwarves and I started to prepare myself for the worst before a lone wrestler broke from the unconcious group: Tisod The Unstoppable

At first I chuckled. It seemed as if he had very little chance of beating such a monster in a one on one punchout. But like the impressive underdog he was he carried on, he demonstrated the Dwarven stubborness that is responsible for their ways of life, he took punch after punch endlessly for almost an hour and the best the Troll managed was a bruise on his left hand consistently, never could the Dwarf be overpowered, however, Tisod grew stronger and stronger, Rocky style, until eventually he could break that troll.

I was stunned to watch him damage the monster to the point the Troll seemed to just give up on life and run to the nearest trap, ending his tortured existance in one turn.

Problem, troll?  8)

( First part can be found here, I suppose you can click my name for the others: http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-2248-thedwarventank-partone )

Oddly enough. His stats were incredibly poor, but he had a sum of patience and had a good idea of the position of his own body.  ;D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / An interesting discovery.
« on: June 28, 2009, 06:07:48 pm »
In fortress mode. It is indeed possible to get your dwarves to kill yourself, though it's a long and complicated process i am yet to decipher. What IS known however, is that your dwarves can become enemies of your Fort's CIV...Whilst at the same time being in it. Causing a pretty messed up glitch that means everyone will try to kill him, and anyone who kills him shall be a murderer ( And killed on sight ) and anyone who kills them, and etc.

Basically, when i revived "Chosen" i expected everything to be dandy...But no. Dwarves attacked almost INSTANTLY, so she must be "outlawed" from her home, only problem is, she goes to the same meeting place as everyone else...We all know what is going to happen...Yeah we do, we know mass fun is going to be had for all.

Hey guys. Thought i would try the "Hermit Challenge" which is basically live in a cave, and let all the other dwarves die/swim in magma/take a long walk into a chasm and let one dwarf live on his own and make him do EVERYTHING. Indeed the game is modded, with tons of civ races ( Yes i know i'll probably get raped by sieges and ambushes but that's life right? ) and my dwarf is NEVER alowed to go outside. For the first few seasons the entrance shall be walled in ( To at LEAST give me a chance. ), then i'll open her up, with traps at the ready, to weather the never-ending storm.

Spring, year one:
Started work on the cave, nice features, including a magma pool ( Somewhere ) a cave river, and a chasm.

Not much to say yet, worked on the stuff inside the cave...Got the other dwarves to wrestle chasm monsters with rather entertaining results, one eventually turned emo and hurled himself into the chasm, and another died of thirst, the rest got their asses kicked.

Walled in the entrance. I have supplies with me, including a breeding pair of cows, and a pig tail shoe ( Which monomnom INSISTED he took it from one of his dead companions near the chasm...Tch, Dwarves  ::) )

And that's roughly it for Spring.

Summer:

Cave is finished, now all i got to do is make it homely, ( By the way if you want me to record events and stuff in the cave when i unwall the entrance let me know ) well, as homely as caves can be to Dwarves, in other words, lots of statues and engravings and other crap, random clothes here and there...You get the picture, i made myself a small farm plot, nothing special, just to keep me alive, rather interestingly, my hermit is the leader, book keeper, broker and the manager. He also engraves, mines, processes fish, dissects fish, does masonry AND carpentry, bonecrafting metalcrafting stonecrafting, cooking, traps small animals, does mechanics, extracts adamantine, hauls EVERYTHING and farms. Yeah.

In all not alot so far, but by the end of the year things will heat up.

Locked due to lack of interest :(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven babies...They have beards too?
« on: June 26, 2009, 04:19:36 pm »
I noticed something damn hilarious, i was looking around my fortress and noticed a baby had a vomit splatter...On his BEARD. I lol'd for several minutes at the thought of a bald baby with a beard, but seriously for a moment.

What the carp?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The weirdest glitch i have ever seen.
« on: June 26, 2009, 10:04:57 am »
Ok i was messing around with Dwarf Companion ( Trying to make elven traders butcherable and seeing what cool stuff i can do ) then suddenly i got spammed by a million messages: "Interuppted by Chosen", so i looked around briefly. Nope. No Chosen Warriors, so i assumed there was a bug with ambushing. Then i saw something simply amazing: My 'Chosen' swordsdwarf ( It's her nickname, since she is extremely powerful ) ripped a guy to pieces. For no reason at all. Then proceeded to murder her own children. Is she berserk? Nope. Is she upset? Nope. In conclusion. There is no reason for her going ape. Then i noticed my ENTIRE army was joining in...Including my ultra-badass axe dwarf who had an artifact dragonsteel axe ( To put it in perspective, it can one hit a collossus easily, and this guy eats GCS for breakfast. ), who rather amusingly chased one of my planters down a long hallway until eventually he had nowhere to go and got sliced into pieces.

What the hell is going on? My men are going ape shit, my civillians are acting their normal-retarded-selves but my millitary are acting like they are being possesed by Armok, and there is NO stopping them, they're trap immune and i can't counter them with a good army, because quite simply, they ARE the army. Looks like a serious oppurtunity for fun.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Overkill with...Skeleton Tuna?
« on: June 18, 2009, 07:24:15 am »
So i was playing Dwarf Fortress, everything was cool starting on a new fortress. Then suddenly:

Fisherman cancels fishing: Interuppted by skeleton tuna

I was like...What the f***?  Well. Wasn't one. A PACK. Of them. And seriously. They killed everyone in a few hits. ON DRY LAND. Now, i've seen some bull crap happen on DF, stuff like mincing beer into biscuits, but really. Skeleton Tuna that kills people on dry land. Come on. Really. :o

I've witnessed this before, many times. But the Tuna was a MILLION times more aggressive than the other fish ( That or these paticular ones were determined ) they followed the fisherman all the way back to the Fortress ( Yeah he had the "Great Plan" of running back to base, since obviously THEN he would get away, right?...Right?) and basically wtf pwned everyone. Yeah. No comment on when they casually went back into the sea, but it sure put me off fishing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How the hell did he...
« on: June 10, 2009, 07:13:18 pm »
Ok. Now i am REALLY annoyed. I recently made a bad-ass swordsman. Not only did i give him "Nerserus" as a nickname ( Felt like pretending to be "in the game" to pass the time. ) i gave him full Keen equipment ( Modded, better than steel by quite alot ) i gave him a Masterpiece Keen Shortsword and other high quality equipment...

So anyway, a clothier went berserk after failing to make his spider silk artifact ( Yeah cloth isn't good enough. Fussy spoilt dwarf... ) so i stationed him outside the door to the workshop and waited for the clothier to come out. I couldn't believe my eyes:

The clothier BULL RUSHED him, knocked him down, made him prone, and proceeded to kick the crap out of him with his bare hands. He BROKE his left elbow before backup even arrived, and permanently wounded his spine, badly bruised his liver amongst other atrocities. THE SOLDIER DIDN'T EVEN *TOUCH* HIM!

I sent everything i had in the fortress after him. It was f**king ridiculous! He broke a giant lizards front leg, and only had slight and bad cuts and bruises on most of his body. Nothing major. He was being ATTACKED BY A GIANT TAME EAGLE AND ALLIGATOR, INCLUDING MARKSDWARVES!. He MANGLED a wolf's pelvis with his bare hands. One giant lizard doesn't look like it's going to make it...HE WOUNDED THE DAMN GIANT EAGLE! However he was starting to wear down, mangled and broken limbs everywhere...But he just kept going. Interesting side note for me: Berserk Dwarves rarely give in to pain...

Holy crap. Just noticed: HE STOLE THE DAMN SWORD!

Lesson: Never. Ever. Take on Berserk dwarves without a crossbow. You know the meaning of 'owned' when they steal the weapon.

Also raises the question: Does being berserk or enraged affect combat ability? Sure does in this case. That or he rolled some impressive hits there.

Another thing why does crap like this only happen to me? :(...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Kobold "Fortress"
« on: May 20, 2009, 04:10:41 am »
Hehehe in adventure mode i found a cave filled to the brim with kobolds.   ::)

AWWWW BLESS EM. ;D

The leader had a copper short sword and MASTERWORK PANTS ( Bad-ass. Excuse the pun. )

Anyway their awesome fortress of deth mostly consists of: Them sitting around all day not talking with tons of crap surrounding them. Yeah that kobold leader's copper short sword sure made me think twice about messing with him: http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1355-koboldmegafortressofwtfpwnage

Well i guess there is just one question. Why the hell are THERE SO GOD DAMN MANY OF THEM?
All i see is: k k k k k k K K!... Them Chosen Warriors with Beak Dogs and full keen plate better watch themselves or the kobolds will mess them up with their copper daggers.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Chosen Warriors: More badass than orcs?
« on: May 07, 2009, 03:41:48 pm »
Recently i got sieged by three squads of Chosen Warriors ( Didn't think much of it. "Free metal" to be honest. :)) They set up camp. So i took advantage by making tons of traps. By the time i was done the entrance was not trapped to hell, but it would take most sieges ( Including a vampire siege and orc siege ). The first squadron started to move: A bunch of wrestlers led by a swordmaster. Expecting this to be laughably easy. I left them to die at my traps. When they got to the entrance they started chasing my cats ( Works for me, no catsplosion. What a sight. A bunch of demons armed to the teeth with keen armour riding velociraptors after cats ;D ). Anyway. After that amusing spectacle was over ( And several cats have been mutilated. ). They went for my entrance, the wrestler got eviscerated and lost all hope for the rest of the squad...But no.

The swordmaster WALKED through my ENTIRE TRAPPED HALL WITH ONLY A SLIGHTLY CUT LEFT LOWER LEG!!!! He then casually walked down the entrance. Panicking, i got my best marksdwarf in with -Keen Bolts- to take shots at him until he dropped. Not a single shot hit him, to reward him for his brave act. The Swordmaster decapitated him in one swing. Saying enough was enough, i got Bomrek, legendary Chosen One killer of the fortress ( Who recently healed a broken leg ), and his partner, a speardwarf in full platemail, to go after him. They surrounded him, i expected the fight to be over before it started. But no. The swordmaster KICKED. THEIR. ASS. Like Chuck Norris versus a rabbit...I said. THATS IT, I'VE HAD IT, WITH THAT MOTHER CARPING CHOSEN WARRIOR, IN MY MOTHER CARPING FORTRESS!...So i made every single dwarf in the fortress a recruit and sent them after him...That Chosen Warrior...Is the most badass opponent i have ever seen...Ever...Period...He slaughtered everybody, he was whaled on at all sides, hell he lost an eye, broke his sword arm...BUT HE IS STILL GOING! Whats more...He's winning, i'm losing every dwarf i send to him. Sure, he isn't killing them so fast now. But people are still dying...Y'know the Truly frightening part?...The fight is still going...

I shall show the video later on, cover your eyes dwarf lovers. To say he kills people inhumanely is an under-statement when he has a sword bigger than the people he is fighting.

FUN FACTS: He is fighting with a bronze pickaxe embedded in his manhood!.

He is SuperChosen Warriorly Tough ;D.

He is kicking everyone' ass on his own. No help at all.

After seeing how epic he is. I WANT him to win. Seriously. He deserves it.
