DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Armour Skill V Dodging
« on: December 31, 2011, 07:21:18 am »
Recently I lost a legendary armour skill unit to a small skirmish squad, whilst the talented dodger companion survived for about ten times longer, even when knocked to the ground several times.

I've also noted that I always pick high dodging with adventurers; I've never seen my armour deflect much more than a punch or two, dodging has always saved my life a hundred more times than armour skill ever has.

I'm curious though, has anyone here ever saw a time where armour skill did better than dodging, or do you guys believe its worthless like I do?

I'm liking Genesis Mod so far. I must say though Demons are ridiculously powerful, in testing I put a warrior dwarf with every single skill in grand master, against a demon of lust with no skills at all ( except what they start with ), both were completely unarmed except for the dwarf wielding a red steel sword.

Let me tell you, that dwarf, just barely won and fell unconcious soon after. In proper DF scenarios I've had a dwarf clad in high quality red steel and sun gold, legendary armour skill, get hacked to pieces by a small ambush force of demons. And when I say hacked to pieces, I mean, ripped apart baby and all within the first few turns without a single Demon casualty. Way more hardcore than regular DF. ( Adventure Mode also had hilarious moments where I got attacked by a sea monster ON LAND )

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Post your super-elaborate traps here!
« on: December 31, 2011, 06:22:19 am »
Make a massive downward spiral with weapon traps along the way ( Low quality, bad material weapons, training weapons, etc etc. Or whips if you want blood to stain all the way down ).

At the top have cages for prisoners and water/magma to help 'convince' them to go down the spiral, then watch as they slide through dozens of traps being beaten repeatedly and stunned by the z level drops as they go. The end can be whatever you like, prehaps another cage trap to do it again or a more fatal 10 steel serrated saw option/megabeast lair.

Make a noble you hate a really really nice valuable room. Then stick the goblin right in the middle of a 3x3 fortification so the noble soils his pants everytime he walks in. Double points if it's a goblin bowman.

Do what the aztecs do; 'get rid of' the parents and let the youngers inherit the lands! repeating this as the children grow older.

Yet another solution brought to you by magma.

Unarmed Combat's effectiveness is bittersweet. In adventure mode, anything that a bogeyman can survive will probably end in a fatality for you, so wasting turns trying to wrestle them will put you in far more danger than you will them for example. I've tried looooads of different unarmed fighters and they do pretty well actually, but only against plausible targets. Don't expect to be able to take serious things like megabeasts, at least not until you're badass. Overall I never exclusively use wrestling unless it's for the challenge, but it's always nice to use unarmed purely for amusement. Strikes and kicks in melee, whilst using weapons, I obviously do when it's logical, but doesn't everyone?

Gather another two and give them to a platinum-blonde human female as a wedding gift.
Game of Thrones. She had a nice pair.

Of eggs.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [0.31.01] Military Bugs
« on: December 28, 2011, 09:42:53 am »
I haven't had the drive to play since the 'new' release made military practically unmanageable.  I wanted to wait until some kinks were resolves but that doesn't seem likely to happen.  Not that I'm complaining, I love what this game is doing, but is there even a major focus right now on patching this broken system?  I feel like it should be replaced by the old one until they have a better grip on things.  Or is everything too woven in, where it is too late to go back?
If I'm honest with you I feel most of the new updates were completely pointless. Varieties of animals are fine, but is things like bee hives really so important that combat must be on the sidelines? Personally I still have some problems with healthcare ( You need to remove the traction benches or the dwarf stays on there forever, even if he heals up, from what I've observed )

I think too much has been emphasised on complexity for sake of complexity. And bugs have just been brushed under the carpet for trivial and random ideas like Bogeymen which came out of the blue and feel deeply shoe-horned in. 'Course this is just my two cents.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: All them captured badgermen - wat do?
« on: December 28, 2011, 07:57:19 am »
Make a huge arena where you chuck in nobles and make them fight to the death against the badgermen using copper daggers. Useful for that annoying mayor that wants you to make him some adamantine cups...

Tip; use the hammer for nails in coffins. Or dents in nobles. Either work.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Favourite construction colour

Any and all colours except grey and white are among my favourites. It gives me that retro feel for some reason and they're good for murals and designs. Red Magneta and Light Green are my preferences though.

Personally I dislike losing but still enjoy the game, can't handle losing is also a bit of a strong word. You're never really going to set out to lose, the main objective is not to lose. Now sure losing and doing things a bit better each time is fun, but I whole-heartedly disagree with unfair losses being fun.

If he has a backup save? Sure, but he might not of saved for a while...I've killed half the world on Adventure Mode, got the deadly bite of death from a bogeyman and I was done for, regardless of being legendary in most of my stats. It was unfair how I died, I forgot to save, it wasn't as fun as I was promised. Now yeah that's my fault for not saving. But why should this guy have to go back or even lose his entire fort if he hasn't saved, just for the sake of a spoiler?

He can save yeah, prepare for it, but not if he didn't know. As for explaining the sheer magnitude of what's underneath...Isn't...That kinda ruining the spoiler? What's your definition of a spoiler's purity?

Also, I feel it's valid to bring up the 2nd poster only spoiled it on the off chance someone did troll him into taking it. It's not like he set out to be an ass on purpose.

The unspoken agreement when it comes to HFS is to be vague, but warn the player that bad things may happen.  I personally also include the recommendation to back up their save FIRST, just in case.  All the previous arguments about losing a fort, people already know, etc. are a crock.

If a player is told "it might be dangerous, back up your save just in case" (which is usually what happens, or close enough), I see no reason AT ALL to spoil the surprise.  What happened in the second post was purely a dick move, and I strongly, STRONGLY disagree with it.

No, we don't tell someone who asks about farming to farm dimple cups for food.  If you'll check "You Have Found...", you'll see that NOBODY there claimed that under the sword was a bunch of prancing gnomes, fluffy wamblers, and endless supplies of booze and naked chicks.  The OP asked about the sword, and he was told there was danger around it, and how to claim it.  Nothing more.  THAT is how it's done.  Deliberately trolling a newbie into killing their fortress is one thing; letting their own curiosity do them in is another.

Personally, I don't care how attached you are to your fortress; the motto of the game is "Losing is Fun!" for a reason.  If you can't have a sense of humor about it happening to a fortress, this is probably the wrong game for you.
Woah woah woah. You can't just say "IF YOU DON'T LIKE LOSING GTFO"; if someone asks a question, they should expect an answer. If they want to find things out for themselves they don't have to ask.

Stop being such nazis about a mere quote put in the game to make people feel better about the learning curve. What a load of self serving bastards.

Anyway, to try and keep this post away from being a simple flame...Spoilers, I agree should be respected. To a certain extent.
The whole idea of the game is that the Dwarves dig too deep and etc etc basically it's kinda based around Lord of the Rings and the Balrog of Moria.

But the key thing is, it's a game. Games are meant to be fun, the game is much more complex than just getting pwned left and right, it's about building a cool fortress and making dwarfbucks too. Now, this guy could of spent days on this fort. Is the spoiler really worth it? No, no it's not, it's not like you're going to be "surprised" each time, it's only the first time. If your only enjoyment is the first time you get owned by Demons.

This is not the right game for you.

29
As said before though; losing a fortress is also not cool.

I mean yeah I get the whole 'fun' running joke thing, but a newbie shouldn't have to get owned just for the sake of a spoiler. I think he'd be annoyed alot more if he didn't know, picked up the sword, and got raped. There's no real way you can tell him about the armies of demons without spoiling it.

Besides, he asked, he got answered. If he was told OMGSECRET or if we flat out lied to him and said picking up the sword was a good thing, we'd be douchebags.

Also, I'm glad there's no Rep System here. Jesus. We'd have people explaining things who'd have -9001 rep apparently.

Yo dawg, I herd you liked derailment, so I derailed your derailment so we can derail while we derail!

Here's a mindscrew:

Dwarves live underground. They grow food underground. They search for metals and gems underground...They have animals that live above ground.
