DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Getting rid of mud/dirt and trampled mud
« on: July 22, 2007, 01:47:00 pm »
I use mud and granite as well, when I am feeling impatient. Normally, a dirt tile that cannot be smoothed, can eventually grow a plant on that tile. Pick the plant, and it leaves bare rock. That's the non-cheating way, but it can take years for the random plant to spawn, and you have to be constantly re-checking little muddy tiles. It's kinda a neat challenge though, see if you can get it all smooth.

Normally, like I said, I use mud/granite. And yeah, use granite on a tile you can't convert, mine it, then you can unmud it.

I concur. Of course, you don't get spider silk, but you do get indoor tree growth!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Taking goblin's stuff out of cages

Personally, I eliminated this problem myself by not using cage traps anymore. It's just easier to kill em right off the bat. 'Course, I don't get caged megabeasts... but that is ok.

DWARVES DON'T DIE OF OLD AGE!!!

...At least they shouldn't! there's HUNDREDS of ways to kill em!

(But yes, they can, if you can keep em alive that long.)

No longer necessary as of .32a  I rename my region folders so that it's easier to keep track of them.

The game doesn't give any error messages at all in this scenario. It just fails to list any read-only folders when you try to play. So if you have no saves except ones marked readonly, when you load, then only options will be "Create New World" and "Quit"

Of course, I am ASSuming this is his problem. 'cause I been through it. Get a good fort started at work (um, HYPOTHETICALLY, of course) and take it home!

I guess I could always rar em and email em to myself, huh.

Let me guess, you burned it to a CD, then copied the CD folder to play it?

I've done this. The folder is marked as READ-ONLY. rclick the save folder, uncheck  READ-ONLY, and tell it to assign the attribute change to all subfolders and files.

If the folder is not initially marked as READ-ONLY, mark it as such, apply, then unmark it.

Incidentally, this gave me a great way to keep my backups organized, I just set a folder (like a virgin world) to READ-ONLY, then the game won't recognize it and I can't play it, so it stays as is. When I want to play it, I either copy it and unmark the readonly or juts unmark the readonly attribute.

I don't think it is as much a bug as an unfinished feature, but I am just guessing. I do abuse it all the time though!

First, hit ALT+TAB to switch between apps, easier than moving stuff to find the DF window when this happens.

I have seen this A LOT, ONLY on XP Pro (I only have played on 2kpro and XPpro). It seems to happen when another application steals focus (which XP is NOTORIOUS for).

I just wish this was a togglable option, then NOBODY would know I was playing at work!

I've seen it with the old Jan 18 version, and both the new version and the patched version.

open command (start->run->'cmd')

type
fc <filename> <filename>

this will compare files byte for byte.

and I use photoshop personally. ms paint is a pos. not that everyone has access to photoshop, though... you could send me the files, i can let you know, too.

The 'mask' area (the magenta) is probably not EXACTLY magenta: 255R/0G/255B

Magenta is used as 'transparent': will be filled with the background color. Anything else will be colored and displayed.

Check your magenta and make sure it is SOLID and 255/0/255. If ONE pixel is, say, 254/1/255, although visually it will appear magenta, it is not 255/0/255 so it will NOT be used as a mask, and instead used as image.

Edit: OR it could be an 8, 16, 32, or 48 bit BMP (can they be CMYK? actually i don't think so.) It MUST be a 24-bit RGB BMP

DF Bug Reports / Re: Dwarf Fortress on Vista
« on: February 08, 2007, 09:28:00 pm »
Good to know, but personally I will avoid Vista until I cannot run my games under 2000. (I hate XP even more than OSX.)

However, if there are more Vista-related issues, I would be interested to know. I will have to upgrade eventually =/

Yeah, my gut instinct (and the last time I saw something like this) was a dying video card. However, a BIOS upgrade to the vid card fixed this one. No guarantees for that working for you though.
