DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Food's a hassle... am I doing it wrong?

Whoever suggested a meatfarm is incorrect as animals, along with dwarves, reproduce by spores. If you have several adult animals, every few months you should be getting messages of baby animals being born. Babies seem to provide just as much meat as animals so as soon as an animal is born order for it to be slaughtered. Make sure all the fat is made into tallow as well; that adds up to a lot of food.

He actually sounds like a pretty Dwarfy elf; his family being eaten alive by other elves lends him a pretty awesome backstory and undying hate for elves. Build him a nice little house out of wood wherever he ends up on the field and post a permanent military squad there to defend him from other elves.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Personalized Adventurer Squad?

I did this once, me and an old adventurer went to slaughter a capital city, which was about 10,000 years old. We walk in and start slaughtering, killing every thing that dares approach us. My companion gets an arrow in the knee and gets knocked down, but continues to fight. He smacks a hammerman so hard that the hammer man slams into me and breaks my right arm, making me drop my shield. We keep fighting, back to back now, and are still doing quite well. An elite crossbowman comes into view (apparently he couldn't see us because of a tree so he actually got really close) and I huck my sword at him, decapitating the bastard. There are way to many people for me to even attempt to go and retrieve my sword, but I do manage disarm a guard and get his.

This goes on for a little while until another arrow just tears right through my partner's stomach. He starts vomiting everywhere, still fighting by the way, until another arrow hits his heart. He managed to kill two more people before he bled out. After that I fought as best I could with only one arm, taking dozens of nonfatal wounds before someone jammed their spear in my gut. Mortally wounded, I managed to drag myself over and light a nearby tree on fire. The fire spread over me and onto my dead friend's clothing. I died after that but went back to find that the fire had consumed most of the citizens.

I gathered up the bones of my fallen incarnations and used their skulls to beat the remaining villagers to death. Then, my quest complete, I dropped the bones around me in a circle (ok it was a square) and lit the ground I was on on fire. I Joined my other incarnations, to wait for the day Armok would call to me again.

The fire was the clever part; you must have been so tough to take a spear and still ignite the tree.

The only problem I can see with building your squad out of crossbow adventurers is that after the first one or two city lootings, they'll be all out of ammo and too stupid to pick some up off the ground. I guess the solution to this is when you're training your crossbowman buy them like 1000 bolts, but will they keep them for their adventure with you?

Bring along a bunch of spears; soon as one gets stuck, take the next one out of your bag and let the battle continue. This tactic has the added advantage of leaving your enemies full of spears, even if you are killed in the effort.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Getting dwarves to fall in love
« on: August 05, 2009, 09:44:13 am »
Almost all of the dwarfs in my fort have lovers but we have only 4 married couples, meaning that as the kids grow up, almost all of them are coming from the same bloodline. It's true military dwarfs almost always have lovers and lots of friends because they spend their off-duty time either mossin' with the other dwarfs or sparring. The different arms of the military seem to intermarry a lot though; my best champion, Tun, is a lover of a Royal Guardsdwarf and his second in command is in love with a Fortress Guardsdwarf.

A better alternative to attacking mayors that say they are untroubled is to murder a townsperson and flee to a different nation, and retire. Your next adventurer will be given a quest from the mayor to kill your previous one. Retire that adventurer and the leader of your first adventurer's retirement home will give you a quest ad infinitum (albeit a very bloody infinitum)

Ok so I read the first page and skipped the next seven and now I'm posting a comment. There IS a fear system, in fortress mode. Sieges run in fear with somewhat complex mechanics; some squads fight to the death, some retreat without even being touched when other squads are destroyed and most flee after heavy casualties are taken. The [No Fear] tag I believe means they won't flee.

I actually heard pits were bad for FPS because the dwarves try to pathfind out the pit over and over again but never are able to. Have you ever done a test with a pit? The only things I keep pitted are grizzly bears I feed the goblin prisoners too so I don't know much of the effect of a pit on pathfinding.

I want a proper King, and for that I need a duke and apparantly around 140 dwarf population. I have 100 dwarves right now and already my machine is running slowly. My newest idea; CAGE THEM. If I drafted unimportant (aka unlegendary) members of the my fort and put them in a cage trap filled room and caused a minor cave-in, could I conceivably capture dozens of dwarves in cages? Would they still be happy? Could I feed them and maintain them? I'm going to be running a test on my fishermen; the fish have been fished to extinction and their non-stop partying is harming my FPS; I'll see how it goes.

Cool I already have a bunch of horses so I think I'll let them free as a sign of my charity; that or throw their cages into the magma (I unfortunately have no magma but I'm just throwing that out there for the magma lovers)

One of my most tragic couplings was between two soldiers. Early in the training, an unlucky blow caused a yellow spine injury on a training wrestler. He lay (and still lays, in his 11th year) in a barracks bed, friendless and alone (I undrafted him from the military too as my military does not accept the injured). Somehow, he fell in love with an Elite Wrestler/Training Axedwarf who trained in the barracks and saw past his injury and inability to move, but her life and their love was tragically cut short by several -Iron Bolts- fired during a goblin siege. He rests there still, entirely friendless; his relationship box mentions only his god and his beloved Elite Wrestler, taken from him so long ago. He will never recover and will likely rest there until he dies of old age or is slaughtered in his bed by something Fun.

They've never harmed anyone; only served as mounts to my enemies.

A failed attack on my fort yielded me several horses in my cage traps which my animal trainer quickly got down to training. In the units menu, it reads 'Stray Horse-Hostile'; will these badboys be safe to let free?
