DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: I woke up to a nightmare
« on: June 27, 2009, 11:15:13 pm »
I start Adventure mode and make a new adventurere, because I suck and they always, ALWAYS die.

So, I make a human...swordsman? Maceman? I think it was maceman...

And I start in the town. I noticed something wrong right away; there was an elf child in the mayor's house.

Confused, I wandered outside. I saw an adult elf.

I walked into houses and found them empty.

Shops, lifeless, no merchandise.

Elf children everywhere.

Fearing that the elves were taking over, I went berserk and started attacking everyone. The elves died. But I came upon a human; the mayor himself.

The mayor was a peasant.

A peasant.

I killed him, too, then wiped out the rest of the town which was strangely...underpopulated.

In the whole town, there was only one human peasant. There were a lot of elves.

I could not live in a world where humanity was nothing more than mere puppets for the treehuggers, so I layed down in the dirt and gave in to starvation.

(Note: The preceding events were partially dramatized. I got bored so I let the adventurer die so I could go to bed. I think.)

So...yeah, pretty weird experience.

Blackburn, I'm still very puzzled by who was in charge of this town. A peasant could not have been in charge of the town; only weapon masters can be local rulers. Perhaps it was a coincidence you met the peasant in the inn? Perhaps it was a swordmaster (same colour as peasants) or a Druid of human birth (they are also the same colour as peasants and would be unarmed). Don't mean to be picky here but I'm very curious about such a unique situation.

What do you mean by mayor? Like an actual MAYOR? Because that is a Dwarven position; that would mean some kind of dwarven elf race controlled your town.

DJ is correct, however the density of the medium (air) is so tiny that his correction term is negligible. The mass WOULD not change and the weight WOULD change but in a virtually unmeasurable way. I would say both of you are correct.

Removing [EYES] tag from dwarves.
You can't just leave us with that ToonyMan! What happened?

Absolutely incredible projects, both of them. I look forward to seeing the Star Destroyer further developed!

NICE! I would love to recreate these circumstances if you knew what happened exactly. I suggested a similar idea in the suggestion forums as a coup, but this is fantastic. Did the Fortress and Royal Guard fight back against your army?

I can't even stand the obscured engravings unless they're placed very carefully and sparingly.
You guys know you can go into the init in data and change engravings so they aren't revealed like that?
You mean ENGRAVINGS_START_OBSCURED? Yup. :p

I'm not entirely sure about that because in my version of 40d11 I had to obscure them myself. But yes, obscure was the word I was looking for there; sorry to accidentally patronize you.

The only thing I can't stand about the base ascii set is how engravings are represented. Going from really organized smoothed floors and walls to mishmash of oddly contrasting random images all over the place bothers me greatly :/
I can't even stand the obscured engravings unless they're placed very carefully and sparingly. I'm using a smooth-wall tileset which fades to black on the + floors and the 'outsides' of the wall tiles, and combining that with the jagged grey boxes of the engravings... yuck.

You guys know you can go into the init in data and change engravings so they aren't revealed like that? I too hated all those Es and Us carved into my floors but when you change them they take on a delightfully smooth texture. It looks really great.

This reminds me SO MUCH of Deadliest Warrior. Do any of you guys watch it? Such a sick show. I can just imagine the host reading out the names and bios of Ironblood and Morul. I have a question though; Crash, maybe I missed a few posts and if so I'm sorry, but how are you making them fight? Did you drive one of them insane or something; I noted that one of them was a @ as opposed to a smiley? Or was this like a dwarf companion thing? Either way, pretty awesome. I think the fact is that Morul will murk in anything other than Ironblood's favourites.

The king went out in a blaze of glory. However, are you sure it was your boy who shot him? There was a human marksman there too! You might have to go to war with them if it turned out it was them who killed your king! Either way, highly impressive.

The two are pretty much of the same difficulty, although the magma chamber requires magma safe materials and you need to wait a bit for the 1/7 magma to evaporate before you can open the trade depot up for business again.

Just provide two entrances to the depot; the 3 wide wagon road and a long 1 tile corridor filled with drawbridges, sealed with either floodgates or even doors. Lock the doors and let the bridges fall. However, I agree with the other people who suggest magma or water filling; crushing things with bridges is not very satisfying. Drowning or fire is way more fun as you can check the elf's health as you go and watch it suffer.

'Churchill gave the signal to attack by cutting down the enemy Feldwebel (sergeant) with his barbed arrows, becoming the only known British soldier to have felled an enemy with a longbow in the course of the war.[2]'

Arrows are just as effective in real life as in DF!!! :o

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarves cancelling eachother
« on: June 23, 2009, 08:49:08 pm »
Yeah there should always be a listed cause; if the 'Site Inaccessible' is coming up perhaps you locked a door or took down a necessary staircase. Wild animals are also often causes. If they are suspending things, maybe there are items blocking the sites. You might also have incorrect resources, i.e not enough steel bars to make that steel throne (you need 3). Sometimes if your dwarves have a long title you do not immediately see why they are canceling because your screen is not wide enough to fit their huge name and their reason; in this case hit [a] for announcements and check the specific reason there.
