Can I mine him out and place him somewhere? Or make a sword out of him with the elf still part of it?

I've heard stories of players encasing enemies in obsidan by placing them in a water pit then pouring lava in, then mining out the enemy. I have a map with a brook and a magma pipe, but the best news is I captured an Elven macelord/Local leader in the service of the goblins. I've got a few questions about this.
1. Will the enemy survive being made into a piece of rock? (I want him to)
2. Can I mine out the obsidan and what will happen with the enemy embedded into it?

No but I don't care who is going to be elected all I want is for this guy to NOT get elected.

My current mayor is also a legendary appraiser. Normally this would be great, except I hate having the mayor the same as the trader. I like seeing a guy run around whos only job is trader, who spends the rest of his year at the Zoo.
Anyways, I know mayors get elected. I heard it has something to do with his number of friends. Is there anyway I can influence the election so someone else gets elected?

I don't think Titans can destroy dwarves(whoops) doors. I had a fort after a tantrum spiral with only 4 useful dwarves remaining and when the Titan arrived and started killing nobles I thought I was doomed until I locked him into the dungeon section of my fort. He was there for probably about 5 years and I never heard a peep from him.

So anyways, I was just playing and a goblin siege arrives. I signal the fisherdwarves and treecutters to head for shelter and get the troops ready at the entrances. However, while I'm looking at the goblin squads, I see they are heading straight for a civilian Hunter, sleeping in the middle of the field. WHY! He has a beautiful bedroom, but chooses to nap in the forest while civies are forbidden to go outside. Anyways, a goblin lasher walked up to this sleeping dwarf and beat him to death with a whip before he could wake. Tragic, as I've had this dwarf for over 5 years and he's a fantastic marksman. If he had been awake, he could have destroyed at least 5 goblins and used his agility to head for more bolts.

He's never been injured that I know of, and he's never in any pain or anything. He just... goes unconscious. It's kind of funny and cute but I'd also like to execute him.

Story of my life!

My barracks was located near the Fort's Drawbridge for easy defense but unfortunately during one orc siege we gave orders to close the drawbridge, and while we sent the champs out to deal with it, the newest squad of soapmaker recruits continued to train. Siege over, the order was sent out to lower the bridge. SQUASH! I lost some great bronze armour and a masterwork obsidan sword to the atom smasher, with no trace. Empty casket funeral too.

The underground plants get all their nutrients from the soil. That's why they aren't green.
This is where the plants get their nutrients from, but where does the energy come from? Do they feed on bugs? Do the plants break down molecules in the soil in nuclear reactions? (actually that sounds so awesome I might even concede you the point there)
Fine, underground farming MAY be possible, although you would think after using the same plot for 10 years all of the 'energy' in the soil would have been used up.

1st Law of Thermodynamics: energy cannot be destoryed nor created.
My dogs (who never eat yet still run around), underground plants (where does their energy come from?!) and free energy waterfall machines all violate this fundamental law in dwarfy ways.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Old Fortress
« on: May 24, 2009, 11:17:27 pm »
Most of my fortresses die from Orc massacres, HFS or boredom as the FPS falls to about 1 with 200 dwarves just running. I don't think I've ever had a fort last over 10 years. But I have some questions about Old forts I'm curious about.
1) When dwarves born at the fort grow up and become adults, do they ever take on lovers and possibly spouses, and create children of their own? I heard that only dwarves of the same immigration wave can fall in love, so how does this apply to children?
2) Can dwarves die of old age? I know they do all the time in legends and such but does it ever happen in a fort?

I actually really like all my nobles. They make the game a bit more challenging and increase the chance of a FUN tantrum spiral, which are awesome to see.
