Elves are good only for wrestling training or testing how sharp your blade is.

NOTHING ELSE

They're good for porn.

WHAT!?!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Legendary Architect -do you bother?

I aim for a legendary architect so I can get that distinctive purple colour. That's just about the only reason. I like a clerk, a trader, an administrator, a mayor and an architect each with their own purple colour.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Most dangerous occupation?
« on: May 24, 2009, 01:10:35 am »
Apart from your soldiers and guards, who obviously expose themselves to the most danger by battling orcs and goblins, what generally is your most dangerous occupation?
My current fortress has lost 6 miners; 4 to magma, 1 to orcs and 1 to insanity. 2nd place is the hunter/rangers, who have lost 3 to the grizzly bears and 1 to the orcs.
I love it when my civilian dwarves die actually. During my most recent siege the orcs siezed a hatch and were spilling across our massive main hall, a 50 by 50 set up. Watching the civies run chaotically away from the monsters was pretty awesome.
I'm getting carried away. Who dies the most and why?

Best thing ever. I'm probably going to go through hundreds of kings trying to recreate that amazing chain of events.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Mounts

I have never managed to convince the humans to go to war with me, although hopefully in the future I will be able to through generous supplies of magma and locking meeting room doors. Nonetheless, I'm really interested in the idea of humans riding horses into battle. How does this work? Is the soldier part of the horse's inventory? Can you kill the horses? Do they travel a lot faster than they could otherwise? If anyone could tell me an exciting story about them being under siege by mounted knights I would be very interested as I feel this is one of the coolest features that I have yet to see in action.

I once caught a whole pack (like 5!) of these things on this terribly haunted land. I mostly used them to execute prisoners, although I once caught a dragon and was planning on fighting the two but I find something a lot more fun in the depths and soon no one was left to put them together. But yeah, they're awesome fun. Just make sure you have a chained kitty behind a trap to recapture the beast.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Drowning chamber: lessons learned
« on: May 19, 2009, 07:19:07 am »
My first drowning chamber was filled through a large murky pool. While at only 4/7, the pool dried up. I'd also forgotten to put in a fortification to prevent the goblin from swimming towards the pool and he did just that, disappearing into the tunnels. I had to mine out a tunnel above the tunnel, channel the floor directly above the escaped prisoner, and station a marksdwarf. These days all my drowning chambers are aquifer powered and HEAVILY fortified.

Stick the King in a cage and trade him to the Elves for a bin of cloth!

It's what i did.
Honestly? Awesome! How much was he worth? Did you use legends to find out what ever happened to him?

Yeah one of my saddest forts went from 150 dwarves to 4 dwarves after an intense break into a

3 of the survivors were gravely injured and the last dwarf spent all his time treating them. A guard recovered and almost murdered the last dwarf, who apparantly had killed a dog during the chaos surrounding the opening of the

Anyways, the King and all the rest of the replacement nobles arrived in the Spring, sadly with no civilian dwarves. A titan arrived, and after a frantic chase through the fort structure, managed to beat to death every noble but the hammerer. The original 4 survived, locked into the old Duke's room which I had converted into a hospital. The crazy titan was eventually locked into the dungeon area of the fort where he remains to this day.
So yeah, the King got killed pretty hard, ripped limb for limb in the middle of a booze stockpile, and since all I had left was one champion guardsdwarf and an old jeweler who spent his time feeding the other two, he wasn't even buried.
Whoops.
Shoulda brought some soldiers with him I guess.

I've seen many a fortress crumble but nothing cuts you like watching your lil' dwarfies starve. Today, my beautiful fort was off to a quick start; we had to be quick; our orc mod sometimes sent sieges of up to 20 massive orcs by first summer. We hadn't started planting yet but we had fertile soil and a ton of turtle meat and booze from the caravan, as well as a dedicated fisherdwarf. The fisherdwarf sadly met his end when pursuing a fire imp into a magma filled channel, but I was confident that we could remain well fed until immigration. Then; disaster.
Tempting fire imp meat ignited the booze pile, which unfortunately was shared with the plants, and most unfortunately, the seed pile. The end result was one dead carpenter and, most unfortunately, only one XXplump helmut spawnXX (mangled by the fire I suppose). Heroic dwarves pulled a few barrels of rum from the pyrocade but that was about this.
Whoops.
Anyways, if we're lucky maybe some deer will show up and one of my boys will learn to hunt. Or maybe the caravan will come. But already, I'm seeing the telltale signs.
Urist McDwarf Cancels Hunt: Hunting vermin.
Uh oh.

Fill the murky pools with magma and make a bunch of bauxite buckets.

« on: May 17, 2009, 05:22:45 pm »
My dogs bred fairly fast, and I usually purchase more from caravans.  My standing army of 41 war dogs (some chained up around the entrance, one or two assigned to military, a few standing around the glassworks where a glassmaker went beserk... weird).

The glassmaker might have had war dogs assigned to him and when he went berserk he was taken down by his own dogs in a tragic and heartbreaking battle. War dogs with fallen masters always keep a vigil at the place their master died.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: DAMN YOU FISHY BASTARDS
« on: May 17, 2009, 05:15:02 pm »
I suppose you can forbid the wood near the river and undesignate any trees you ordered to be cut down near the banks but that's just avoiding the problem. Dam the river higher up, station archers alongside the banks or train up a hammerdwarf champion in swimming using a pressure switch operated drowing/swimming pool. This early on I would suggest just hiding from the fishies and then annhilating them once you get the dwarfpower in the first immigration wave.

Hey thanks everyone for your help it was something to do with the creature and entity file relationship; I never found the problem so I just changed the entity and creature names both to ORK as opposed to ORC and somehow this worked instead. Weird but I don't mind.
