DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tidings of war
« on: August 13, 2009, 10:50:17 pm »
Man, you don't even need a war-fort. With a masterwork armourer and good supply of steel you can pump your fortress wealth up massively. Obsidan short swords, while very powerful, aren't worth very much though, but the best part about having a few hundred masterwork swords laying around is that if the gates ever fall and the orcs are coming in, every civilian can go down with a sword in their hand and a dead orc at their feet.

architect... purple

Eh?

Yeah, the profession related to building design is architecture and if its a dwarfs highest skill it will become an Architect. Since Architects belong to the Nobles/Administrators profession, they're marked with purple smiley faces. If you use mods or something you might not see your dwarves as coloured happy faces so it doesn't really matter. Anyways, if I have a mature fort I like to try to get one dwarf of just about every job so I always get an architect, level him up to legendary through designing supports and grant him a room and office in the noble quarter, a dining hall in the noble dining level and a tomb in the noble gravetunnel areas.

Unless my Mayor is essential to his particular area of expertise he generally has no jobs during his term. I maintain full time noble/administrators (one clerk, one trader, one manager, one architect; I really like the colour purple you see and to maximize the amount of different job titles) who are devoted fully to their assigned noble/administrative duties so it seems natural that my mayor devote fully to his.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: how do you want the magic system to?
« on: August 10, 2009, 04:05:55 pm »
Lord of the Rings still had a pretty awesome magic system; there were magic buildings (like the tower at Isenguard) and things like undead armies and talking to animals, but there was pretty little in the way of WoW magic based attacks that take all the charm and mystery out of magic. If there are wizards they should wander and have strange abilities.

I've had one mayor for almost 10 years before. I'm pretty sure the election is only once a year though, during early summer.

I once caught a Skeagle and would make it battle a dragon I captured in my multileveled arena. The fights would always be amazing, especially since the cages they were released from were 4 z levels up from the floor where the loser would fall to.

My mayors are my favourite nobles and I feel if they are popular enough to become elected, they should be allowed to order the beating of one of their voters. My mayors inherit a beautiful bedroom, office and dining hall but this is not always enough; anyways, a government sanctioned murder is one of the quickest routes to find Fun.

Add this to the dwarf raws (first item in creature_standard):
Code: [Select]
[IGNITE_POINT:9001]
[SEVERONBREAKS]
It's not much, but it will help out your food problems quite a bit, without leaving you feeling like you cheated.

I'm not sure how this will help with food problems but I'm sure it would be exciting.

I'm a bit confused as to how I've became a shapeshifter king of Jews but I am nonetheless impressed with your collection of pyramids Itnetlolor.

If you run a world gen for 10,000 years (as I once did) and visit a Kobold cave, you will flip out.

Well, my fortress is doomed, only reason i saved i so i can mail it to my account and download it from my game computer later on to view in fortress visualizer, first siege was ok, but the second one, the human caravans were there, some hammer guards. Orc siege, orc wrestlers and orc hammerpeoples, one orc hammerlord, didnt care to remove the floor-line over the pit-moat because i thought my sheriff and their guards could deal with it, apparently not. Even if i survive, my fort is doomed to a horrible tantrum spiral.

I dunno about you but it sounds like your fort is just getting fun. Losing is Fun. Like honestly, watching your dwarves get slaughtered and heroically die defending their babies and going crazy and ripping each other's eyes out is pretty much the best part of dwarf fortress. If you don't like losing you might just want to stick with vanilla; additions like Dig Deeper and LL are generally for players who enjoy losing as the main game doesn't offer as much danger.

Yeah they wander it's pretty cool. My band of adventurer's once met up with an old fort of mine and we immediately attempted to recruit the several champions, none of whom were at all interested. We then tried to fight them and were slaughtered piecemeal by their Ultra-Super-Mega-Legendary abilities.

The first time I started Adventure mode I was following the wiki. Which turns out to be complete rubbish, as I have yet to start in a mayor's house and there are never any drunks. from there I decided to go it alone, stepped out of town and was promptly eaten by wolves.

Yeah Drunks are a lot rarer than they used to be, but if you look hard you can occasionally find them. If you started as a human you should begin in the Mead Hall, aka Tavern, Pub, Bar which is often mistaken as the Mayor's House, although if you follow the mayor (who is actually just a local weapon's master) you can find his real home. Anyhow, if you did a good job of picking your initial strengths wolves should never be a real difficult as long you back away from them and attempt to battle them one by one.
