DF General Discussion / Re: New Dwarf Therapist for DF 2010
« on: April 05, 2010, 09:56:13 am »
For now you can save the game, and when you're back on the main menu, refresh the connection in DT, then continue the game.

And there was much rejoicing :)

Interesting that (like others earlier in the thread) it wouldn't connect in game but would after saving and going back to the menu, but after that it worked great :)

Thanks!

Just in case you haven't used it before, the "Notify" button on the top and bottom of the thread display will set up an automatic email to you whenever there's a new reply (there's some configurable options under Profile -> Notifications).

Sweet! :)

Generally in DF that is accomplished by making you the only dwarf alive.

The laser beam shipment couldn't make it in the timeframe.

I'm really excited about the new release, and I'm really grateful for the past versions of Therapist, and any future work done on it.  I'm one of those so spoiled by the splendor of DT that I can't play fortress mode without it :)  Fwiw, a job-management-only version would be quite sufficient to get me started.

Arena mode has been a lot of fun, though.

(as I hit post I saw chmod's latest had just come in)
Wonderful!  Sorry about the flood of didn't-read-the-disclaimer bug reports you're likely to get, but know that you have my gratitude (accompanied by a small token via paypal) for braving the swarm :)

Mayday.  My first serious gaming was FFI on the NES, and it's kinda in that tier of things.

How about Bridges of Death?

Bridges of Death aren't a problem at all if you've taken the precaution of looking up swallows in the raws files and memorizing the pertinent information.
What about Drawbridges of Death?

I would think it preferable to use the surface temperature tag (homeotherm? I'm forgetting...) to make the elves go thermonuclear like the cats...  That way they go knowing that they are the doom of their trees ;)

Architect, thread-tone issues aside, let me assure you that making an application that is:

1.1) non-trivial
1.2) single-threaded
1.3) not written with a change to multi-threading in mind

into an application that:

2.1) is significantly multi-threaded (such that, say, at least 1/3rd of its processing can be on other cores)
2.2) behaves in a semantically identical fashion to the original application

without:

3.1) performing an extensive review of all current source code to identify candidate "threads", and the resources (objects, I/O, etc) they'll need to read and/or modify
3.2) identifying which resources will be needed by multiple threads (read and/or modify), and deciding on an appropriate method of synchronizing those accesses
3.3) refactoring the source code to implement the new threading scheme
3.4) extensive testing of the new application to ensure the semantics are identical to the old one (to some degree of acceptability)

is an unsolved problem in computer science.

To put it another way: your enthusiasm for improving DF and dealing with hard problems is a good thing, but it would be put to much better use on other, more-tractable issues.

DF General Discussion / Re: How many problems can magma fix?
« on: November 30, 2009, 04:34:28 pm »
Magma solves all problems.

If Magma doesn't solve it, it's not a problem.

If Magma solved it, it was a problem.

If Magma kills you, you were the problem.

I'll never think of double buffering the same way ever again.

I can see the problem now when you go to 'Carve Fortifications' and instead do 'Carve Shelving' and don't realize that you just ruined that entire part of your defenses >.>
The solution is simple: pour magma on it.
