Reclaiming resulted in a completely empty pool, which is what i usually find whenever i run into a MVUGP.

World history reveals nothing odd, although this being a large world there's quite alot of it, so i may have missed something.

Unfortunately that puts an end to my investigations; turns out there was a Skeletal GCS chilling by the Chasm, right up until my Farmer ran over and aggroed him all the way back to my fort.

Still, i am determined to find out why UG Pools randomly decide they're not full of water.

It turns out the pool is actually 2 levels deep, it's just that the second level wasn't revealed by the opening in the wall.

Current theory is that it didn't spawn enough water in the pool for some reason. Perhaps pools spawn with a randomised amount of water and it's possible they spawn with none at all?

The creatures didn't get abducted by aliens, they retreated down to the second level when the water on the top level mysteriously vanished.

(Fire Man toasted other cat, then went off to wrestle Troll, set world on fire running across the grass, then dodged down chasm.)

What in gods name; Summer just arrived and the water in the UG pool vanished completely, taking with it the inhabitants. There's no corpses or anything, just muddy rock.

Current theory is alien abduction; they're clearly stealing our water. Further explorations will need to go on hold due to an accidental breaching of the Magma Pipe, resulting in a Fire Man loose in the fort.

Cold biome, murky pools are currently frozen.

--EDIT--

Correction, murky pools just melted. Cat drowned.

--END EDIT--

It's exposed through a small hole in the side of the wall; no water is exposed to the dreaded outside (at least none of it has frozen.)

Interestingly, it seems that the pool is content to remain at 4 and 3 level water, with the water just skating all over the surface.

It also appears to have a single tile in the level below with 7 water, i would suspect an Aquifer, except the site doesn't have any.

Mysterious.

So, i'm sure this has happened to some of you; you're mining through the mountain when suddenly WHAM! Underground Pool.

That is completely empty. And full of cave spiderwebs.

Well my friends, i have recently been lucky enough to discover The Mysterious Vanishing Underground Pool in a situation that may unveil some reason behind why it vanishes. For i just embarked upon a location with one, except that it was revealed to the surface thanks to a small hole in the rock. It started off full, but within seconds it was down to 4's and 3's.

I will report back when i find out what is draining my MVUP.

Sadly, bug {001002 ▪ (0.28.181.40d) [dwarf mode][jobs][sleeping]  hunters and dwarves without beds make the decision to sleep on traps, which kills them} has been, apparently, fixed by Toady.

Awwww.  :(

I thought that was a feature!

Goblin1: Man, i heard about these Dwarves. They have an Elf, for their King!
Goblin2: You shitting me?
Goblin1: I am totally serious, this Elf is so badass the Dwarves accept him as their King!
Goblin2: Fuck that, lets go raid the Orcs.
Goblin1: Probably be safer.

If it's an Aquifer you'll just get a hole that fills up with water.

Alarmingly quickly. And, if digging up/down with stairs, no damp stone warning. And an entire mining complex that has to be sealed off. And water movement lag up the wazoo.

Who, me? BitteR?

That's why you dig up above it and then dig down into it. Aquifers aren't pressurised, so all you end up with is a small hole full of water.

I did once dig up into an Aquifer, but due to a bit of luck all i ended up with was a nice waterfall.

If it's a UG River though, be careful; it's possible it may be pressurised and will rapidly flood the fort. I usually dig exploratory shafts into potential UG Rivers from the surface of the map to avoid this.

A fell mood just landed me an artifact throne with the image of the Elf King on it. And yes, the throne menaces with spikes.

Brilliant. This appears to be an instance of the rarely-seen Awesome Elf. You need to dedicate your entire fortress to his awesomeness.

If you're in a calm area, probably not, but you're better off having them training up to be useful than standing around not. You probably will get sieged eventually.

Urist McDwarf has been ecstatic lately. He admired a legendary Weapon Trap recently. He complained of drowsiness recently.

Probably means you've got yourself a duplicate entry somewhere :P

I've been entertaining myself by deliberately creating duplicate entries to try and get something playable (Dwarf Fortress: CRAZY Edition). So far i've had empires of Purring Maggots, Cave Crocodiles, Dragons (eeee) and i was able to start a fortress of Carp (who promptly airdrowned.)

Migrants are never not useful; train them up to do something useful.

If you've got lots of rock and want to get rid of it, make some Mason's workshops that your 'good' Masons can't use and set them to repeat stone blocks; the blocks will be stored in bins, cleaning everything up nicely and making it easier to atom smash\dump down the chasm.

Send them out to fish, turtles are always handy.

Deactivate your good miners and give the migrants some picks, set them to strip-mine an area of dirt. They'll be talented miners in no time and you'll soon have a 30 strong force of near-ledgendary miners capable of stripping an entire z level of a 6 x 7 map out in about 10 minutes (tee hee).

Turn on Mason for them, don't let them into the Mason's workshop (again, using workshop profiles like before) and lay down some walls and other constructions to be built.

And, if all else fails, stick them in a squad and get them wrestling. A good solid army is always a useful thing to have.
