Dwarves can also channel out the roof if you build an up stair below it (but don't connect it to a down stair.)

Tropical regions show up on either the top or bottom of the map, and only on Large worlds. I've never managed to generate Tropical locations on a medium world.

If you're interested, i use this algorithm to generate worlds that are about 40% tropical, usually completely covering the top or bottom third of the map.

It makes a pretty crazy world with lots of good regions (Unicorns! Yay!), rivers and tons of magma scattered willy-nilly. Lots of great fort locations for hippo farming.

If you edit it though; keep in mind that the subregion max is 8000, which is more than DF's default max of 5000, so it may reset to 5000 if you edit it in inside DF, which will cause endless rejections (as this generates about 6000 - 7000 subregions.)


I gurantee that gen will give you tons of Tropics.

Depends; if you generate enough wealth to trade with the first autumn caravan, expect to see Orcs that winter.


I had my crafting operations honed to perfection to generate tons of wealth ASAP to maximise trading profits, i installed the Orc mod and was immediately and horribly eaten, seven times, before i realised i would have to tone down my money making operations.

I built a big pit in the middle of my fort and chucked him and a dozen orcs into it.

He won.


Unfortunately i had to drop a bit of floor on him to kill him off so i could get at the piles of orc bones to make practice bolts (since i couldn't drown him, what with him being a Hippo and all.)


He's starting to show up in engravings now though :D



Also, any ideas for a better Hippo Pit that i can retrieve the loots from without having to kill off my Hippo?

And yes, my Mayor hates rats, ironically my two cats seem to be spending most of their time dancing around outside eating faeries instead of inside killing the rats terrorising my mayor.

Fortunately i deliberately set up my fortress so that my Dorfs have to run under a waterfall to get to the booze, so they're all estatic.


Hell, i accidentally trapped half my fortress under the waterfall with an insane Elf Trader who refused to drown, even though they were all starving, dehydrated and terrified of this Elf that couldn't possibly reach them no matter how hard it tried, they were still estatic.

So my Ledgendary Engraver has been charging around engraving the entire fortress (because he can) and i've noticed an odd theme to his engravings.





This theme repeats across about 50 - 60% of his engravings (the others are all pictures of two dwarves; the symbol of The Tin Bodices (my home culture) or two giant eagle skulls, the symbol of The Silent Fountains (my group of dorfs.) Although Kol isn't always terrified, he is always surrounded by rats. In every single depiction of Kol, he is surrounded by rats.

The dwarf in question that is being terrorised by rats happens to be my mayor.


I'm wondering if my engraver has certain bad feelings about poor Kol :P

The Wagon doesn't have any attacks listed in its raws; so i doubt it's the Wagon.

I'm guessing the driver 'attacks' for it; which is functionally identical to the Wagon running dudes over.

So my current Hippo trapping operation has been met with mixed success. I'm not really patient enough i guess :D, but by the time i finish the entire country is going to be plastered with cage traps; i will get every last Hippo in this place!

One of my earlier attempts to herd hippos into the traps resulted in the loss of my most expendable dwarf (hence why i used him to herd them); my Metalcrafter\Mechanic. Annoying, but not serious (one of my Miners was also randomly savaged by a Hippo for no apparant reason.)


Anyway, the hippo that decided he didn't want to be herded and would rather eat my Metalcrafter just got himself caughted, and i've 'Tamed' him. Of course he's named and blooded now, so he isn't actually tame.


I've currently got him stuffed in a cage, but i'm not sure what to do with him. I could butcher him for mucho Hippo meats, fats and bones, or i could throw him in a pit and toss Goblins\Kobolds in there with him once i start capturing some. Or i could stick him inna zoo.

Whatchoo think gies? What should i do with Conngimegul - the killer hippo?

I just had a Kobold Thief appear right in front of the foremost trader wagon; the soldiers were lagging behind due to taking potshots at hippos in the nearby river.

The Thief ran forward in fear, but the wagon simply plowed right over the top of him.
