They make things look nicer and make them easier to understand, in that i can see at a glance if that is a camel or a child, rather than having to use k.

I believe it's also a case that Fortifications don't actually block creatures; they just prevent them from willingly pathing through them.

There was a bug where a Wagon was punted through some Fortifications, and i once had a Goblin get golf'd through a line of fortifications, only to die upon impact with the wall behind them.

I had a Troglodyte get named, die of old age a few seasons later and rot away, all before any of my Dorfs had gotten anywhere near him or seen him at all.


The next step of course would be to crack open an Underground Pool and discover it full of named and long deceased lizardmen.

You always embark somewhere around the middle of the embark area, so you'll just need to move all your stuff up to the top right ASAP.

My Dwarves run head over heels to clean up mud on smoothed surfaces. It's annoying, they'll cancel just about any job they have (including 'throw the Ledgendary Orc Warlord into the gladiator pit' and just leaving him there, in the middle of the fort...) that it's actually really annoying sometimes.

But the depth of a game starts to look fairly shallow when the means stop there.

Frankly, I think Rysith's application of why's and when's speaks to me in a better way, makes more sense, and makes for a better story.

And as Toady would say, its all about the stories.

Denoting a game to the generic 'Hack'N'Slash games would therefore make it uninteresting, and Dwarf Fortress to me, though sometimes frustrating, was never uninteresting to me.

Truth, wars should definitely be based on actual civ interaction, but we should also be able to influence those interactions to a degree. I mean racism and religion are two major causes of conflict in our world; hell, "They look funny" and "They worship a different god" are two of the most common reasons to go to war. We should be able to say "These guys think these guys look funny, and thus don't like them very much."

You only need to irrigate once; floors will stay muddy forever (so long as they're not smoothed floors, which your dorfs will dilligently clean.)

I'm pretty sure i successfully traded the Adamantine King, i mean, i caged him, designated the cage to be dragged to the depot, traded the cage and he's not on the list of Dorfs anymore.
