DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress review

Dwarf Fortress has a very poor interface, nobody in their right mind can possibly think otherwise.

Sure you can get used to it, but that doesn't make it a good interface.

However, i'm not bashing DF's interface, it really needs to be completely redesigned by somone who knows how to design an interface, but that's not Toady's priority, I don't blame him for the poor interface atm (i will if he releases the finished game X many years from now without fixing it up tho :P)

THIS TV IS FULL OF WORDS! WHAT'S GOING ON?

On a more serious note, i'm a 5, except i don't use Linux because i'd rather use the industry standard (being Windows).

I can use Linux though; have to, my uni uses Linux for it's servers.

Fun fact; sometimes the basic tile in a biome is the "Aquifer" tile, which leads to a fun-filled surprise when you try the cave-in method to get through the Aquifer...

DF Bug Reports / Odd Digging Bug
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:03:24 pm »
I just discovered that if you set a ramp to be dug in the 'open air' at the top of of an undiscovered magma pool, your dwarf will dig through the level above to dig the ramp, which will then be physically dug into the obsidian rock on the level below, revealing the magma pool without actually breaching it.

_D__WWW
W_R__
W_X__MM

D is where Dwarf is
R is where Ramp designation is
X is where Ramp actually gets dug
W is walls, M is Mgma, _ is a floor.

Here's some screenies;

Level above the magma pool, level at the magma pool and level below the magma pool.
You can see the Ramp my Dorfs tried to dig.

Adamantine is made of awesome; it's about 4x as 'strong' as steel.

And the other aspects are very fun. I highly suggest looking for HFS (code name for Adamantine) in good fortress sites.

Or it wasn't 7/7 magma.

I've seen flies and such, in under 6/7 water, so...

That's possible.

It just dropped seventeen z levels out of the sky stone dead.

Was it dead before it hit the ground, or did it just pass out?

No clue.

DF Suggestions / Re: Endgame Depths to bring back the feel of 2D
« on: April 23, 2009, 07:41:38 am »
Personally i always figured Adamantine was just demonically imbued rock; energies from the demon pits cause small seams in the surrounding rock to fuse into a lightweight and nigh-indestructable 'thread' of rock.

Doesn't really make sense, but we're dealing with demons here, logic is chilling down by the pool; oblivious to all.

Because i just noticed a bunch of Acorn Flies swimming happily about in my magma channels under the forges.

Now that's an interesting sight.

And yeah, death would be less than impressed with DF Dorfs. Although he does do his best not to judge, abusing cats gets h`im rather upsetty.`

Even if he doesn't, you should be able to transfer whatever entity definition he uses to aboveground biomes easily enough.

"Bloodedrivers the new Beginnings"
On the forums is a masterful rendition of an image of a human and a dwarf fortress wiki. The dwarf fortress wiki is being read by the human. The human has no goddamn clue what the hell is going on.

Fix'd

True, EVE probably gets the cake for worst interface ever, on the other hand it is very good from a simulationist point of view.

Wheras alot of things in DF just don't make sense, at all.
