Utilities and 3rd Party Applications / Dwarf Fortress Geological Survey
« on: November 04, 2016, 03:00:02 am »
I'm starting work on a new utility that will show a world map, with user-selectable overlays, showing mineral deposits, wildlife locations, plant populations, etc.

This will allow a user to do a more advanced site search than is currently possible with the in-game site finder. Say, for example, you absolutely must have both iron and gold in the same site, you can see a map of the world showing where iron and gold deposits can be found.

Besides this, what would people expect to find in such a tool?

DF Community Games & Stories / Welcome to Tinkissed
« on: November 02, 2016, 12:29:30 pm »
Welcome to Akrulais, or Tinkissed, in the common tongue.

A band of idiots have decided to come to the middle of bumfuck nowhere, in a dead and desolate plains, for one simple reason: to get rich off black dye.

Legends told that this area, and this area alone, holds the thorny bushes that produce the coveted Sliver Dye, a deep black dye, prized for its rarity.

Here is our band of dumbasses:

Lorbam Keskalrovod, "Lorbam Shotarch", expedition leader
"I prefer to be by myself."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

  Olon Berdanasob, "Olon Walkboards", Miner
"The quest for knowledge never ends."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

  Libash Asënthak, "Libash Gravellocked", Woodcutter
"I could really use a drink."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

  Atír Tulonlotol, "Atír Roadorder", Stoneworker
"I've been well."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

  Kûbuk Nekutgeshud, "Kûbuk Secretfortresses", Jeweler
"Always deal fairly."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Zan Tomusthîkut, "Zan Shovebook", Fish Cleaner
"I could really use a drink."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

  Led Vabôkemal, "Led Orbsenses", Fisherdwarf
"Yes, I want more.  Is that so bad?"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And here is the freakish place they've chosen to set themselves down.

...

Yeah, they're doomed.

You can pick a dwarf for me to name on a first come first serve basis.

I'm working on a new utility to view info about your dwarves.

Only shows numeric info right now, but the eventual plan is to have procedural portraits being drawn.

DF Suggestions / Condense the emotions and ingredients lists.
« on: March 17, 2016, 01:55:22 am »
Often, when a dwarf has a lot of things effecting his emotions, the list become huge and impenetrable.

For example: http://i.imgur.com/SogJcWy.png

Instead of the huge wall of text, it might be better for it to say "He didn't feel anything after seeing 5 trolls and 25 goblins die"

Foods also can get a similarly long list of ingredients which can be condensed similarly.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ensuring resource access.
« on: July 17, 2015, 03:00:29 am »
I want to make a megaproject, and I want to make sure I have access to steel and sand in a forest area.

What's the best way of going about this?

If I disable all cavern levels in worldgen, will that hinder me? I don't want them slowing the game down.

DF Modding / Making a world of candy mod.
« on: July 13, 2015, 10:31:55 pm »
I've been struck by an idea of a mod that turns everything in the world into food. Think the candy race world in Wreck it Ralph.

This thread is so I have a place to stick all my ideas for it while I work on it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fortress crashing
« on: July 04, 2015, 08:45:01 pm »
I have a fortress save that will always crash a few minutes after loading. Is there any thing I can check for to see why?

I have DFHack installed, but the crash isn't from there because it crashes even without it.

DF Modding / Designing a DF UI from scratch.
« on: June 11, 2015, 12:37:35 am »
So I'm working on a 3D DF viewer (Armok Vision) that I'd like to eventually be able to control DF from, but if I'm going to do that, I'd be making the entire DF UI from scratch. And if I'm doing that, I'd rather do it properly.

So I'm making this thread so we can brainstorm things.

Primary things I think are important:
-Proper mouse and keyboard usage.
-Not relying excessively on hotkeys.

Nice things:
-Joypad control.

Note that while I'm putting this together for Armok Vision, there's no reason why it has to stay with that. After all, weather it's 3D or isometric or Top-down, you still have to do the same things in DF.

I was thinking that a pie menu could work well for most stuff that you would have to do on a tile, similar to Sims, though that wouldn't work well for long lists of materials, for example.

What are all your thoughts on this?

Creative Projects / Potentially need artists for a game.
« on: April 05, 2015, 01:44:17 am »
I've been approached to make a short and simple game, and I need artwork for it.

I will need small-ish game sprites, and large portraits for dialog, as well as environment artwork.

The game is about a chapter from the Ramayan, and will be using characters from there.

I figure we have at least some good artists here, so if anybody is interested, we can work out the details.

Right now we have special habits unique for dwarves, which makes sense, being dwarf fortress, but now that you will have other races living in your fort, perhaps they can also get their own thing to differentiate them?

Off the top of my head would be humans having either a mood effect, or something similar to alcohol withdrawal, when they spend too long underground.

DF Modding / Multiple tree growths
« on: December 24, 2014, 11:48:11 pm »
Is there any way to have different tree growths show up on different tiles?
I've tried playing around with the GROWTH_DENSITY token, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

So I'm working on a 3D dwarf fortress Visualizer, using Unity.

Now with detailed dwarf sprites!

Spoiler: Changelog (click to show/hide)

What set this apart from other visualizers is that:

- It reads the map in realtime, much like Stonesense
- It does not run within DF, but as a separate program, communicating with DF through fast network interfaces.

Current list of planned features, in order of importance/order of implementation:

- 3D map, slice-able at any layer, much like Stonesense and normal DF. Done.
 - Camera angles that include DF top-down, with and without perspective, and Stonesense Isometric.
 - Sprite based units that use the rather powerful Stonesense sprite system, optionally showing full outfits on all your dorves.
 - Some way to control DF through the program. This can be either done by directly copying over the game UI, or with a more advanced interface. Obviously the first is easier.

I am choosing to concentrate on only showing a small portion of the map, for performance reasons. If it eventually becomes possible to show the entire fortress at once, great, but that isn't the aim.

Art style isn't yet fixed at all, and if any artists want to help out, they'll have the most say, but I'm currently leaning towards similar to Stonesense's bright colors and simple shapes.

Spoiler: Old Screenshots (click to show/hide)

Downloads for all operating systems.

The project is hosted at https://github.com/JapaMala/armok-vision, but may depend on DFHack features that can be found in the development branch of DFHack.

Right, so I'll be playing this game everyone's raging about. I will make... hm... 6 bay12ers into sims. Or 4, if the wait is too long. Or something.

If you want in, I need:

Name: First, Last.
Appearance: General description of how you want to look. There's a lot of customization in body shape, so I'll try to get it as close as I can.
Three traits: Since most of you plebs probably haven't played the game, here's a list: http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Trait_%28The_Sims_4%29
One aspiration: This is where the fourth trait from sims 3 went. here's the list: http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Aspiration_%28The_Sims_4%29
Age: There's child, teen, young adult, adult, and elder. The middle three all look exactly the same, and the kids have fewer traits.

Let's do this.

Life Advice / Looking into higher education
« on: October 03, 2014, 11:40:00 am »
Background:

Failed highschool, worked in various design related stuff for many years, currently a drafting and 3d guy in a building firm, which I'm doing rather well in, but I want to move further.

So I'm considering applying for universities and aim for a Batchelor of architecture.

My questions are:

What are my chances of getting anywhere with my spotty academic history? are there standardized tests I can take to make up for it?
As I'm quite broke, I'd have to find some sort of financial aid, and/or have a day job at the same time.

Should I even bother? Or should I try to find a life with what I got?

I'm both American and German, so anywhere in either America or Europe is possible, though I have family living in california, colorado, germany, and italy.
