Sadly it's fairly easy to create a fortress that is simply cut off completely from the outside world, and entirely self-sufficient. I like the concept, but being totally impervious to any and all invading forces gets a little... dull after a while. :(

I expect this to change a bit with the introduction of underground threats - the ability of enemies to assault your fortress from below as well as above. You could accidentally tunnel into a dangerous region, directly into the soft underbelly of your residential district.

I'm hoping tunneling creatures make it into the next release, giving us the constant threat of intruders from any direction, into any part of our fortress. Talk about paranoia.

And the siege arc will probably introduce effective siege engines capable of getting past moats, through walls/drawbridges, and so on. I'm looking forward to that as well. :)


Another thing that could change this is needing water for brewing. Makes securing your fortress a little bit trickier.
Fortifications and Grates.... make is a little issue, you just need to start near water.

as for the romanic letters, i am not sure if it is modern or classical (if it includes j, u, or w it is modern, also not sure if it uses lower case), and the arabic numerals (english numbers) are both normal and flipped.

68 katakana (only single characters)
75 hiragana (only single characters)
18 arabic numerals (8 and 0 flipped are the same)
37 (41) roman letters, a, h, i, m, o, t, v, x, y are the same when flipped (english letters, u and w are the same when flipped)
39 (44) lower case roman letters, i, l, o, p, q, v, x have issues when flipped (english letters, w is the same when flipped)

with 865 different characters and the green colors EBFFEB, 00FF00, 006400, and the yellow colors FFFFEB, FFFF64, AAAA00, you can make a very comprehensive display

Why not just include all of the Kanji used in Japanese writing? There are thousands in common use alone.

the site I chose is in the north-west corner of the map. there's a massive river flowing there, but there's sadly mo magma spots touching it. :(

and no, the river does not separate continents completely, though it does make quite a split.

also, this is not my own find, I got it from another thread, I forget the name.

I got a nice location here, the elephants aren't too much of a bother, and the view is nice, but there's so many possibilities that I can't decide.

sadly, I found shortly after uploading this that my intended method of damming the river doesn't work, as fortifying the walls on that edge simply lets in more water.

One advantage of the current system is that it's possible to build bridges out of constructed floors instead of using retractable bridges or drawbridges. When I built a long aquifer I gave it supports, but a proper bridge over a major river would never be possible if this was re-implemented without some changes.

sounds like you had a good time here, though if I had been into DF then, I'd have been able to advise you to stay clear of anything involving the films. :P

tho I have to say, you do indeed get used to if after a time. in fact, I'm afraid that after living here for 13 years, I think I might have gone downright local.
