Mafia / Who are the Gnosia? Game Over - Crew Win!
« on: April 07, 2021, 01:48:12 pm »
Gnosia infection has been confirmed. Setting a course for the Depotto system. Initiating cold sleep protocol.

All Gnosia must be eliminated before the destination is reached.

Welcome to Gnosia Mafia, an open setup for up to 15 players. It is based on the Switch game of the same name. Notably the setup features a lot of town power roles, but no roleflips.

Setup Rules
- There are no roleflips.
- The setup will consist of a scumteam of Gnosia, crew members and some or all of the roles listed below.
- The number of Gnosia and which roles are present will be confirmed at the start of the game.
- This is an open setup - I can answer any questions regarding roles or gameplay in-thread or in private messages.

Gameplay Rules
- Days will initially last 72 hours. There are no hammers. If the vote is tied at the end of the day there will be a runoff.
- The runoff is an extension to the day phase that lasts 24 hours. During this runoff players can only vote for the players who were tied for the vote. If the vote is tied at the end of the runoff phase the game proceeds with No Lynch.
- A player with the most votes after the initial day phase or after the runoff will be put into cold sleep and eliminated from the game.
- Please do not post after the deadline for the day ending. Votes will never be counted after that point.
- Weekends count as 24 hours.
- Players should vote in red.
- Players can vote for No Lynch. No runoff vote will occur if No Lynch is tied for the most votes.
- Nights last 24 hours.
- Communication between players regarding this game is only allowed in this thread and in mod-provided quicktopics.
- Do not quote any private communication you receive from the moderator.
- Flavor text is purely for flavor - it will never provide any additional information regarding player alignment or the source of a kill.

Other Games / Chronicle: Runescape Legends. F2P card game from Jagex
« on: June 23, 2016, 12:34:56 pm »
I started playing Chronicle a couple of months back after seeing a sponsored stream, and I ended up enjoying it a lot. While the general F2P model of the game is very similar to Hearthstone the actual gameplay is something quite unique.

The idea is basically that instead of getting creatures to fight for you you're setting up your own adventure, 4 cards at a time. The cards you play are creatures that give you rewards when you beat them and "support" cards which give you rewards in exchange for gold. Then at the end you have a fight with your opponent to see who's stronger. Or alternatively you can try and kill them before it comes to that, or interfere with their adventure to try and cause them problems.

I think it's definitely worth a shot since it's free, and I found the basic set to be surprisingly interesting from a deckbuilding perspective. As I said the F2P model is very similar to Hearthstone - you earn in-game currency to spend on packs by doing daily quests and winning games, or you can spend real money to buy premium currency that also buys packs or cosmetic features. You can't trade cards with other players, instead you turn your redundant cards into crafting materials to make other ones. There's also a draft mode that can be very profitable once you get the hang of it (it's how I've managed to avoid spending any money on the game).

Some advice:
- You should try and complete all the fights under Solo. When you complete all five fights for a given a difficulty level you get a free pack. This should also give you some idea of how the game plays.
- You unlock all the basic cards for a legend once you get them to level 6. There are actually some pretty important cards in there (eg Gorge in Vanescula) so you should probably level up before you try to play Ranked. You also get some goodies at levels 5, 10 and 15.

Mafia / Mafia Setup Discussion and Review
« on: December 31, 2013, 10:01:23 am »
This thread is for:
- Discussing proposed open setups and individual roles/mechanics
- Finding people to privately review closed/bastard setups

Spoiler: Setup Definitions (click to show/hide)

Some tips for setup design:
- If you're making an open setup, try and imagine what would happen if everyone agreed to claim their role on day one.  Can the cop stay alive and clear everyone?  Are there so many unique roles that the mafia can't blend in?  Remember that an uncontested claim in an open setup is usually a confirmed townie.
- Unless your setup is very strange a significant majority of players should be town.  Having an abundance of neutral third parties makes it very hard for town to win, and can also make the daygame sluggish.
- Try not to have the balance of your setup rest too heavily on individual players.  Ask yourself what would happen if certain roles died on the first day or night - does the setup fall apart?
- Be wary of including methods of changing win conditions outside of bastard games.  Players often don't like it because it means all the work they did up to that point was useless.

Mafia / King of the Mafia 3 - Game over!
« on: March 11, 2013, 08:39:26 pm »
Spoiler: Flavour (click to show/hide)

Welcome to King of the Mafia, your chance to win the fabulous crown of this subforum!  The rules are below.  They were originally written by Dakarian and have been edited by webadict and me (my edits are in italics).
You think you've proven yourself, child?  "Oh my, I won as town!"  Meh, that's easy with a whole army at your back and power roles you can abuse.   "But I've beaten the town as Mafia!"  PHAH!  With friends and a horribly weak town.

But can you do both?  Can you take down the mafia with 6 others, then turn around as mafia and BEAT those 6 to a pulp?  Can you pick just the perfect role-braving additions caused by an evil mod-that will not only help you as town but also as scum?  Can you fight off endless waves of people, including those you've killed?

Well then step on the hill and see if you have what it takes to be King of the Mafia.

Spoiler: Basic Rules:  READ! (click to show/hide)

Specialized Rules:

Inning is not required to sign up.  To sign up read only the first two pages of Xylbot's role list and choose ONE role from there (and PM it to me).  You will then be assigned with that role, with a possibility of additional features based on balance or tomfoolery(though nothing hidden).

Once 7 people have signed up, the game begins.  A random person will be picked as KING MAFIA and will be given, on top of their role, the Mafiakill.  The First Round ONLY will start with a kill-less Night (that is all killing abilities will be disabled).

From there, the game continues.  During the game, anyone else can Sign up to be put on a queue. Game will play like a standard mafia game.  If you die at any time, you may Sign up again, though others who haven't played that round will have priority.

If King Mafia is killed at any time, the round ends.  Those in queue will take the place of those that died to refill the ranks back to 7 (those still alive remain), a new KING MAFIA will be picked, and the game will start on the next phase (Old round ends in Day, new round starts at Night...)

Play continues until KING MAFIA succeeds in being the ONLY one alive.  Note that all players being dead does not fulfill the KING MAFIA win condition - in that case a new round would begin with 7 new players.

There is an antilurk system in place.  Each RL day, you MUST have either voted (even if its for the same person) or sent in an action.  Fail once and you get one prod.  Fail twice in the same round and you will be killed, a player in Queue will automatically Sub in for you, and you will not be able to rejoin.  Ever.

All may join this game, though be aware of the antilurk system.  Please read this line Dariush.

You're done with the rules.  Now join and claim the mountain!

It is currently round 4.

Mafia / Trust Mafia 2 (0/2) - Game over!
« on: December 29, 2012, 03:49:11 pm »
This game is an experimental 2 player setup.  One of the following two setups will be used:

1/3 chance:
2 townies

2/3 chance:
1 voteless mafia goon
1 townie

Special rule: it only takes one vote to hammer lynch or no lynch.

Town wins if, after the day, all townies are alive and there are no living mafia members.  Otherwise, town loses.

Mafia wins if town loses.

If one week passes with no votes there is no lynch.

Should be relatively easy to find 2 players.  The setups are weighted like that to make the chances of your opponent being mafia 50/50 if you're a townie.

Round 1 results:
Urist Imiknorris - Lynched - Townie (lost)
Nerjin - Endgamed - Townie (lost)

Round 2 results:
webadict - Survived - Townie (won)
ToonyMan - Lynched - Voteless mafia goon (lost)

Mafia / Mafia and Masons and Hackers - Game Over!
« on: December 15, 2012, 08:49:23 pm »
Spoiler: Flavour (click to show/hide)

This game is a 13 player open setup: Masons and Mafia.

The roles in this game are as follows.
4 mafia members
4 masons
5 townies

Mafia members win if they make up at least half of the remaining players in the game.
Townies and masons win if all mafia members are eliminated.

There is no night phase so the mafia do not get a nightkill, but instead they have another ability.  At any time any mafia member can send in a daykill (or "dox") action against a town player.  If that player is a mason, they are eliminated.  However, if that player is a townie then the mafia member is eliminated instead (in this case no information is given about who the mafia member targetted).

Mafia members and masons are both told who their partners are, but do not have any private means of communication with each other.  No private communication is allowed in this game.

Phantom of The Library Hapah

Welcome to the fourth annual Cards tournament!  We aren't like those other boring tournaments that restrict you to just one game or to cards which actually exist.  Here we recognise all cards as equal before god.  So bring 5 of your own special cards and see if you can become LORD OF CARDS!

Of course, we have the same old naysayers claiming the tournament has been taken over by some kind of shadowy syndicate.  We would like to once again strenuously deny this allegation, but encourage participants to be vigilant in routing out illegal "teamwork" or "friendship" related activities.

Spoiler: Rules - please read (click to show/hide)

Urist Imiknorris (mafia) - won the tournament!

General Discussion / SPIES!
« on: June 30, 2010, 08:33:17 am »
Well, this story seemed interesting to me.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jun/29/russian-spies-suburban-america

(I don't guarentee accuracy of the article - it's just the paper I normally read.  Feel free to visit any other site).

Basically, it seems that the FBI has caught 11 Russian spies.  These spies allegedly worked very hard to maintain images of them as normal Americans, but were secretly passing information back to Moscow.

The thing I want to know is... why??  What could you possibly learn from these spies that you couldn't learn just by having a few American newspapers delivered?  Why go through all the bother of planting these people all over the place considering the risk of discovery?  Am I missing something very important here?

Damnit, Lensfail is hiding around here somewhere... you just know it.  Looks like it's gonna be your job, once again, to bring him down.

Every night you may inspect one player to determine whether or not they are Lensfail.  Luckily he is outrageously obvious to you.

Quote from: netadict
Everyone else in this game is irrelevant.  It's just you and the scum.  Of course, those other idiots who are ostensibly on your team don't realise that, and will probably lynch the wrong guy.  Luckily, you can set them right.

Once per game, you may declare I am the lynch (bolded) in thread.  The lynch for that day will be blocked, and you will be allowed to use a nightkill for that night.  Note that you cannot block your own lynch in this way.

Quote from: GreenWorrier0
Lurking is your speciality... in fact, you know everything about it.  So much so that you can work out alignments based on it.

Every night, you may inspect someone.  That person has to have posted less than you in the previous day.

Rules:

The game is now on hammers.  With 9 alive, it takes 5 votes to lynch.

The deadline is 21st December 2012.

Roles will be fully revealed on death.

Mafia / Horrible Role Mafia - FoS Brigade? - Mafia Win
« on: November 23, 2009, 11:04:09 am »
It was a peaceful, happy town.  A town where all those who had been shunned by their communities could go.  There they didn't have to hear "You'll be useless if the dopps attack, get out" or "If the mafia comes, you're dead meat".  There, everyone had a handicap.  There, everyone was equal.

So a depressing sense of inevitability was felt when they found Generic NPC 1 murdered on what they had decided to call "Night 0", for some reason.  "Perhaps if we didn't try and number off our nights and days like this this wouldn't happen?" suggested someone, but noone was listening.  They were two busy drawing up plans for the next day, and forming a battle plan against the enemy within...

Welcome to Horrible Role Mafia.  The roles in this game are diverse, but they all have one thing in common: You'd much rather have the vanilla version of your role than the one you get.  All roles have some form of handicap, and this handicap can manifest itself in a wide variety of ways.  You will have to work around your problems and exploit the weaknesses of your enemies to win.

All roles in the setup will be unknown.  Possible alignments are Town, Mafia, Jester, Serial Killer and Survivor.  I have written up a game for 12 players (many thanks to webadict for help with balancing the setup) but can run it with more or less in necessary.

Signups are now closed.

Signups (7/12 alive):
ToonyMan - Substitute - Lynched day 1
Pandarsenic
Vector - (Mostly) Reformed Psychopath - Shot night 1
Apostolic Nihilist - Sonambulist - Chopped apart night 1
RedWarrior0 - Suicidal Music Loving Suvivor - Self-defenstrated night 1
Nirur Torir - ??? - Shot night 2
Eduren
ExKirby - Dakarian
Mephansteras
Solifuge
Kashyyk
CobaltKobold

Revealed roles (4):
Quote from: Substitute
Hahahaha.  Did you really think all roles would be negative?  It was a lie!!  You have the only positive role in the game!

Every time someone dies, you will go to their grave automatically and steal any and all abilities they have.  All the abilities you steal will stack together!  You will even be able to use multiple abilities per night!  AHAHAHA!  You'll soon be UNSTOPPABLE!

Your role pm will be updated every time you (automatically) rob a grave.

You cannot steal group abilities.
Quote from: (Mostly) Reformed Psychopath
You've always had a horrible and crippling ailment resulting in frequent mass murdering sprees, but recently you've been seeing a psychologist and have got better.  Well, slightly.  You still get occasional urges, y'see...

Every night you MUST choose someone to target.  If they are town, they will die.  If they are not town, they will not die.
Quote from: Sonambulist
Every night you will visit a random players house and disturb their sleep.  You feel terrible about this though, and you will need to send them a letter personally apologising for waking them up on the next night.

You have to work out who you visited and send their name to me by the next night or you will kill yourself.
Quote from: Suicidal Music Loving Survivor
You will attempt to kill yourself every night unless you can send me the name of a song in another player's role pm (the player can be alive or dead).  If you do this successfully, you will be too busy singing the song and dancing to it to kill yourself.

You cannot send in the same song twice and you cannot use [REDACTED] :P.

One more hint: The only thing all these songs have in common is that I've heard them before.  Good luck.

Rules:

No private communication except on the Mafia quicktopic
Tie results in No Lynch
Players will roleflip rolename + alignment + abilities on death
Days last 4 days (weekend counts for nothing) with possibilities of extensions and shortenings if over half of the town is agreed - note that this deadline system is not meant to be abused

Mafia / LCS Mafia - Game Over - From The Jaws Of Victory - CCS Bastards Win

Spoiler: Disclaimer (click to show/hide)
That's right, LCS Mafia.  I have thought of starting it before, but in my mind it always became a normal mafia game with the word "liberal" inserted into the flavor text at random times.  However, I think I have found a unique theme for the game.

The issues.

Spoiler: Revealed Role Pms (8) (click to show/hide)

Yeah, so that's about it.  Your role pm will clearly seperate alignment related abilties, passive abilties, active abilities and issue related abilities, so there shouldn't be too much confusion there.  This game probably won't start for quite a while, perhaps after Panda's edition of BYOR mafia ends.  Please feel free to ask any questions about the game here.

Mafia / One Shot Mafia
« on: October 21, 2009, 03:59:46 pm »
Spoiler: Opening Flavour (click to show/hide)
Welcome to One Shot Mafia.  Everyone in this game will be given a 1 shot ability.  Such abilities could range from a daykill to a roleblock, but all roles may only use their ability once, no matter what it is.  Roles will be unknown in this setup, and there will be no duplicate roles.  Some roles will be strong, others weak.  Just remember: Shoot wisely.

Mundane rules:
No hammers - Deadlines with possibility of day extensions
Tie results in No Lynch
No quoting any pms you receive from me
Pms between players are allowed, but I'll need a copy of any/ all of them
The dead and the scum will get their own Quick Chats
If your 1-shot ability is wasted due to a roleblock, protection, bad timing etc, tough.  It's still used.

Scum all get their own 1-shot actions, but get to perform an NK every night, hence the fact that they are evil "Repeaters".  Anyway, anyone want to play?  There are quite a few mafia games going on at the moment, so I'm fine with delaying the start of this one a bit if we want to lower the amount happening at once.  The game has 9 or 12 slots for signups, depending on interest.

Signups (5/9 or 5/12):

4. Apostilic Nihilist

Mafia / Small Mafia Game - Any Interest?
« on: October 07, 2009, 04:26:27 pm »
I've been thinking about mafia games on this forum recently, and a common complaint seems to be that large games are too bloated, with players flaking and scum getting an easy ride due to the large numbers of players.  So, would anyone like to play a round of a game with far fewer players?  We could choose a bunch of experienced and active players, which should make for a fun and interesting game.  The two variants I have in mind are Lyncher and Dethy.  You can also post any other ideas for small mafia games (7 players or under, I guess) here.  If there's enough interest, I'll run a round of one of them (the small number of players will make it easier, and the fact that there's no night phase in Lyncher would make it easier still :P).

The current setups I'm considering -

Lyncher
Roles: Lyncher, Lynchee, 2 townies, mafia member/ serial killer
The game: The Mafia member/ Serial Killer has a nightkill, and his goal is to be the last player left alive.  The Lyncher wins if the Lynchee is lynched, and this will end the game with no other winners.  The town's aim is to kill both the mafia member and the Lyncher (or have the Lyncher NK'd).  If the Lynchee is nightkilled, then the Lyncher can only win by being left with just 1 towny at the end.  This will require some pretty good gameplay, since a mislynch on the Lynchee will spell an instant loss.  Bear in mind the Lynchee does not know of his role, and will roleflip as a regular towny if he's NK'd.  There is also a variant with no mafia, but this might be a bit too easy for the town to win.

Dethy
Roles: Mafia member, Cop, Naive cop, Paranoid cop, Insane cop
The game: Yes, the archetypal crazy setup.  Basically, the players don't know what kind of cops they are, and need to try and work out who's lying.  The town will usually No Lynch on day 1 and day 2, allowing the two remaining cops to work out who is lying scum.

I quite like the idea of having 5 of Bay 12's best slugging it out in one of these games.  Anyone want to play or got suggestions for the setups?
