DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: 2D vs 3D What's your opinion?
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:06:20 am »
Yeah, and 3D maps have a lot more variety.  Sure, it's nice to get all the features, but generally almost all 2D maps were very similar.

My philosopher has never done anything bad.  In fact, he's never done anything full stop.

One of my fortress dwarves appeared to have pierced all four of the fingers of a kobold's right hand with one shot, causing me to imagine the kobold doing a karate chop... on nothing.

I think the other thing that having a bedroom helps is being able to own your own items.

xD !!*computer*!!

It's made by the legendary mechanic Bill Gates :3
Since he's a mechanic, it's probably some kind of disguised trap.

the economy doesn't help the framerate

How does the economy affect the frame rate?
Coin hauling, for one, can clog things up, and possibly the tracking of each dwarf's individual accounts as well. For those of us with slower comps or laptops, it makes a difference.
So don't make any coins, they don't add anything.  Not sure about the accounts though, wouldn't've thought it made much difference after all the other things stored about your dwarves.

You can always edit the raws to make them trainable.

Then you get WAR GIANT EAGLES

HUNTING GIANT EAGLES!!!

Imagine a peaceful scene of 3 deer, eating some grass...

SUDDENLY, YOu hears  screech and out of nowhere a Dwarf RIDING a GIANT EAGLE swoops down and grabs the deer

would be epic....
What happens if you mod in mounts for dwarves?

Bet we can't wait for advanced dwarven personalities to come out. We could be seeing some really warped ones like the two mentioned earlier in this thread.

Also, someone in another thread posted that their DM made friends with only children and had recently ordered a cage. We all knew the Dungeon Master is suppoused to be crasy, but a pedo? It's a good thing we don't have child abuse programmed into the dwarves.
There may be a more innocent reason for it - if you're good at keeping all your dwarves busy, they may not have much chance to socialise, except for nobles and children.

You may hit an aquifer, or a nice seam of iron/ platinum/ aluminium, so you probably don't want to plan too rigidly ahead.

The tomb I gave her is the biggest in the fortress and covered in masterwork statues and the like. And I tossed her some steel armour.

Good job. Back to topic: Does it help to get down when dodging arrows and bolts?
I asked this to Toady on another thread.  His response:
Quote
3.  Grounded units cannot be hit by projectiles until their "ground effectiveness" kicks in, unless they don't have one in which case they can always hit.  For shots or thrown projectiles, this is the range of the shot (or maybe that -1).  The idea was to have them pass over intervening grounded guys to hit their intended target.  However, people mostly shoot at the closest enemy, so it's mostly for you in adventure mode.  I don't think there are any other modifiers for being prone, though there reasonably should be.
So you can be shot over, but it doesn't seem to make much difference if they're aiming at you and are good at shooting.  It also does double damage if you're on the floor, and your decreased speed will increase the number of shots they get in.  I wouldn't advise it much.

Now in summer, 240.

Got another siege - 5 squads. Morul cleared out 3 1/2 but the rest ran off. Lots of ranged units in this one, and they still present a risk to Morul - he got dinged up this time. Nothing to stick him in bed, but it looks like he caught a bolt in the arm and got a brown wound and a bunch of light grey ones. They healed up quickly, but one of these times he might catch a crit in the throat, heart/lungs, or face. They really unloaded on him though - bolts flying everywhere.

He's up to master macedwarf and the social skills are high master. I think after mace I'll move him to sword.

We've got about 20 full sets of masterwork steel armor now as part of wealth creation. I thought about making some statues, but realized that the only legendary blacksmith is Morul. Might have to train up another one.
Have you considered making a walled off area to trap attackers in so you get them all?

They will go insane without alcohol.  All is lost if they don't get it.

It doesn't feel broken to me, as much as incomplete. I don't like how some dwarfs simply don't earn money. Why does the duchess, have no money? I think it'd be hilarious if she wanted to buy something, but was too poor. Or couldn't afford her royal bedroom, and had to downgrade to a peasant hovel. :D

The thing I love about the economy is that it drives the need (and responsibility) to be dwarven. You have to hollow out the mountain with your miners, and pave a tower to heaven with your masons, and weave enough clothing to feed a continent. Or tantrum spiral.

Champions and nobles need no money.  I think of it as an incentive, but it doesn't work that way.  The mayor tends to go a bit nuts once elected.
