I tried Tribes 2 after it went open, and found it annoyingly difficult, but that may have been because only the old guard was left at that point.  I may have to look into giving the franchise another stab, though.

Again, if your an escaped lunatic your probably not going to get a key.

We don't just hand out things to people who just signed up.

"We" aren't regdate elitists, so don't do this.

You're on the B12 forums, and you don't consider yourself elitist? Theres something wrong with you.

We're like the epitome of elitism.
I always thought the general rule when it came to handing out free things such as giving away free games and beta keys was that you couldn't be an escaped lunatic. It's sort of to promote being an actual member of Bay12 and not just someone who just comes to get free stuff.

"They're more like guidelines than actual rules.  Arrr."  No reason to not be nice to the newbies, though, especially when there's apparently two more keys for every one given out.

That WAS true, but that is no longer the case. Pirates are now only a nuisance. You can play safely.

Aye, I talked to Haxus about it for awhile and he at least made it where new pirate space stations spawn without the wolfpacks, so a few equal-level patrolships can keep a system clean.  Main problems with them still are the 'Toxic Waste' syndrome where higher TL people can come thru your system and leave you a mess of a max TL pirate station, and the fact that setting up patrols thru multiple systems doesn't work so well (they will get separated and picked off eventually, due to no squad-making possible).

I had been following the nerfs, including the pirate stations.  It's a step in the right direction, but I still view requiring multiple warships at the max TL you can produce in every system as a fundamentally broken system, and the "Toxic Waste" problem is not a minor bug, especially for empires starting near populated space.  Are the pirate stations still spawning on a daily basis as well?  That put a lot of hurt on smaller empires who may not log in daily.

Starport GE is still running I think. No idea at the current state of it, though.

It is, same as it's been running since 2004 last I checked: a small player base with about 1-4 people on any given server at a time (keep in mind this is advertised as an MMO), and mass accusations of favoritism getting thrown around based on token purchases ingame.

The pattern I'm seeing is a programmer who has a really great game idea, like Starport or Shores of Hazeron, and has the resources to go private to develop it.  They then proceed to spend the next decade in alpha while they mess around with major feature changes that alternately astonish and alienate their playerbase, while mostly refusing both advice from their testers and the idea of hiring an outside point of view to keep them on track.

Exceptions I've seen are Toady, who has DF planned out, so no one's surprised, and Notch, who basically hired a team and his own boss to keep him on track.

Yes, yes, and yes.
They added enemy pirates and timed/remote explosives that can be used to also blow open doors though.
...
Also, combat rolls are quite a bit different, with a small chance of critical hits that allow you to penetrate armor.. so no ones invincible anymore..

Read:  Haxus added pirates that pull from any published designs, including secret, unbuilt TL32 designs from some of the larger empires, and repeatedly spawn mobs of up to 10-15 of them in your systems at whatever your current tech level is.

The warfleets of virtually all empires in the game were wiped within a week, and instead of recognizing the system as fundamentally broken, Haxus just toned them down slightly to 5-7 at a time, since he stated he wanted to keep large empires from being run by only one or two players.  :P

I was running a good sized empire (Blitzfaust) on the edge of populated space with a couple friends, and we got buried by pirate versions of Tymas and Toucan warships.  Couldn't even build new ships, since they spawn in orbit within reach of the pirates.

Basically, the game went from "not very new-user-friendly" to "haha, screw you."  I was severely disappointed, since the game has so much potential.  I used to play another game called Starport: Galactic Empires that effectively went down the tubes due to a head-up-their-ass developer who wouldn't listen to his beta testers, so I have little hope things will improve at this point.

Little too weak, I wouldn't use that at all without the ability to build. How about it has half the attack speed, which would translate into making it significantly worse for building and de-sappering?

I imagine a large wooden mallet would work.
Too weak, even with airblast? Reflect rockets and grenades at the cost of needing a teammate to upgrade your buildings, plus enhanced melee and the knockback to shove things around?

Unable to upgrade or repair?  I'd never use it.   If I'm going to need a teammate anyway, a pyro/engie combo seems it'd be a lot stronger than an engie/engie airblast combo.  Particularly since pyro/engie can operate independently if needed, while an engie with a normal level 1 sentry isn't doing much.

Yeah. Maneuverability is just something that should be different for each chassis.

However, I hope at the same time it is a sort of tradeoff. How is upgrading torso turn rate for example handled in the books? Or is it pretty much stuck at what the specifications that the base design is capable of for a maximum, as would also make sense? Otherwise the most maneuvarable chassis would be the best to choose, especially if it can be modified to make up for the stock chassis's weaknesses (like weak armament)

I've only played the games, but previous iterations had maneuverability as a fixed function of the chassis, non upgradable.  However, you couldn't just modify a Hellspawn to have anywhere close to the fighting capability of a heavy-class 'mech, so it balanced out into a choice between speed and punch.  You could choose to boost the top speed on a chassis slightly, however.

I'm not asking for free turning speed, I'm asking to utilize the turning speed.  I played one (bit older) Mechwarrior game where it bottomed out my mouse sensitivity.  My light mech would turn about as fast as an assault, standing still, no matter how I attempted the mouse.  As soon as I hit the arrow key on the keyboard, it would turn on a dime and dance circles around enemies.  This is what I hate to happen, when your mouse limits your mech.

I've also tried to play pure keyboard.  How the hell do you aim at a running scout using keyboard?  I'm sure it's possible, with enough coordination, but it's a hell of a lot easier when you can just swing the mouse over and keep a bead.

Joystick much?

Joysticks are dead, man.  They're dead.  *sobs

I probably shouldn't taunt anyone with games that are only in development, but if you can check out infinity online. It probably deserves its own post but you should definitely watch this tech demo the creator made in 2010.

Infinity Pre-Alpha Tech Demo

Make sure to watch the whole thing through, or at least till he flies down to the planet.

Interesting to see that seems to be being developed again.  I was under the impression it was in development hell, since the first version of that video was five years ago.

This could be awesome...registered and waiting.

My biggest gripe with most M+KB action games is that they never raise sensitivity high enough!  How the hell are you supposed to fight when your light mech handles 1/2 mph turning speed because you can't adjust the sensitivity?!

In mechwarrior online I would rather not have people being able to adjust the speed of which they can turn their mech or torso.
Othewise people with mouse sensitivity 10+ are are allways going to have it easier than people with it set to 2 also it would look really silly if a mech just made a 360 degree turn within 1 second :P

In previous Mechwarrior games, torso twist and turning had hard max limits depending on the Mech chassis.  I can assure you that if the devs ignore that, they will be butchered alive by raging Battletech fans.   :P

Perhaps a prepaid Visa card might be the way to go?  I think you can buy those with cash and pay for something online with it.

Dwarf Fortress in space! With spaceships you build yourself, TILE BY TILE, and they move around in realtime, and you have a sector and build a huge floating space station and interact with other entities. Or maybe you build a huge swarm of organic ships around a big mothership and go on a slow cruise through the galaxy, feeding off asteroids and civilization fragments.

Oh, how I used to dream of this. I even downloaded PDCurses ASCII and set myself up to program it...

It probably never will happen. :(

You might want to look into Shores of Hazeron, although the dev unfortunately decided recently that he needed constantly spawning pirates in every system at the same level as the player.

There's Allegiance, which is free, but it's multiplayer-only.

This is a good one that hearkens back to older space sims.  It's one hell of a learning curve, though; those guys take things seriously.

I think the problem was that the space games became more focused on space combat and accurate physics rather than exploration and trading. Sales went down.

That was never the appeal of the X-Wing vs. TIE or Freespace, though; they were straight combat.  I suspect it has more to do with the rise of the FPS...I love Half-Life, but it spelled the beginning of the end for space sims when it made the FPS pick up in popularity.

damn those tsunamis and shit were pretty nasty, but I didn't think it would affect me this far D:
I was gonna try and get some new stuff for my computer :(

It was a bit of a perfect storm, in my understanding.  The primary factories for most suppliers were in Japan, with the secondary factories and suppliers of most hard disk motors in Thailand.  No one expected Japan to get hit by a tsunami and Thailand to be mostly flooded within a couple months of each other.

It certainly ruined my coworkers' hopes of scoring 3TB drives for under $100 on Black Friday.

Whatever you do, don't even think about upgrading your hard disk space, unless you're going for an SSD.  Between tsunamis and flooding, the suppliers are pretty much wiped out, and prices have near tripled.  The 1TB disk I paid $60 for a couple months ago is running $150 now.
