Descent. The whole series. Played in chronological order.

Including the Freespace spinoffs?

They are Decent: Freespace, in reality.

Technically that's incorrect, the Freespace series is not connected with the Descent series.  According to that wiki, Descent: Freespace - The Great War was released under that name to avoid trademark issues with a disk utility released under the name FreeSpace.

Pah... I don't know how to run the ISO's from a virtual drive.

It's not hard at all.  I'd recommend Alcohol 52%; it's a free download, and sets up the virtual drive for you on first run (with your consent).

Also, Allegiance is pretty good, but I will warn you that the playerbase is relatively small, and very, very serious.  It's the only game I've seen that has an open, player-run two week academy to learn how to play.  If you think it might be your thing, it's worth the effort, partially due to the interesting command dynamic that it has.

And what Libelnon is sad, but fairly true.  Nothing's been able to hold a candle to Freespace 2...at least there's a plethora of user campaigns for it now.

Never heard of Hardwar before, though, it looks intriguing...I might give that a shot myself.

Wish I could try this, it sounds like just my thing, but my laptop would choke. :(

The FreeSpace Source Code Project is a free, updated version of FreeSpace 2 with plenty of decent mods and I seem to remember downloading a mod which was a recreation of the first FreeSpace.

Yes, they have a port of the original FreeSpace to the FS2 engine, plus a redone Silent Threat campaign to make up for that sorry excuse that Volition released.  Highly recommended, although with the graphics boosts that have been done, you'll want good hardware.

If you can get it running, I'd also recommend a FPS/RTS from 1998 called BattleZone, by Activision.  It didn't sell well, but was very well received by the critics when joystick games and flight sims were in vogue.

Heavies become much harder to play when I a spy is around. They're just big walking targets.

Hehehe...this is true.  Along with their medics.  ;D

Ravenholm. Nuff said.

Yeah, definitely.  That reminded me of another one, though...HL2's devs said for Ravenholm they were inspired by the Return to the Cathedral mission in Thief: The Dark Project...another level where you're wandering around a ghost town, not knowing what's lurking behind the next corner.  I got my brother to play that mission for me the first time.

Thief 3, the asylum. The first half was terrible. Very creepy, but no actual monsters. I can kill monsters, I can't kill nothing!

I hope you mean terrible as in scary...just spending the first half of the mission piecing together what that place was...one of the freakiest levels in videogame history, IMO.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Lame artifacts!
« on: June 27, 2010, 10:52:43 pm »
I still remember my first artifact in 31.  A dwarf with no skills other than weaponsmithing grabbed three or four strands of Adamantine, some forgotten beast bone, and a black diamond.  I was sitting there with the biggest grin on my face possible.  All commands in the fortress stopped until the artifact was finished.  When finished, the artifact had a name consisting of words like 'murder', 'blood', and 'dagger'.  Then, I looked at the rest of the line.  It was a hammer.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-(wait, this is actually hilarious)-FFHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

It took me a minute to figure out why this was lame, since I usually play 40d.  Adamantine is not heavy enough for hammers in the new version, correct?

KG

Exactly.  It's about as effective as those giant inflatable hammers you can get at fairs.  Except it weighs even less.
Though, I wonder if decorating an object increases weight, can't remember off the top of my head.  If so, would a decorated hammer be better than an undecorated hammer with the same quality and material?  TESTING TIME.

EDIT:  After creating an adamantine war hammer (Weight<1), I decorated it with every metal known to dwarf.  End weight: <1.  If decorations have an impact on weight, it's near zero and thus meaningless.

Gotcha.  Sounds like the hammerer has a new toy...  ;D

Unfortunately, CotW only runs in windows, not DOS. XP mode emulates 64 bit windows XP without XP's backwards compatibility mode. Irritating really.

True. However, with the right know-how (and looking on the Dosbox forums) it's possible to run Windows 3.1 from within Dosbox. So, he's technically correct, though I've heard it's a rather tricky setup.

To be fair, that wasn't what I had in mind, but thanks.  ;)   It'd definitely be easier to set up a virtual box with Windows 3.1...you can get Sony's version for free, and Windows 3.1 isn't terribly hard to find an old copy of.  You'd be all set, and you wouldn't have to mess with your existing computer's settings much at all.

Edit: Someone mentioned the Castle of the Winds games earlier in this thread. I tried to play them a little while ago, but because they were compiled in 16 bit rather than 32 or 64 bit my Windows 7 x86 computer won't open them. Windows has a free emulator... if you have Windows 7 professional, I have home premium. Anyone know of a program, short of finding an old copy of windows 3.1 and using DOSBox, that will run a 16 bit program on a 64 bit os?

Windows 7 has a built in Virtual XP mode that might be worth a shot...other than that, yeah, getting an old copy of Windows 3.1 and any of the popular "virtual box" software should work.  I'm not familiar with Castle of the Winds, but if it runs under DOS at all, DOSBox should be able to handle it, even if it's 16-bit.

anyone heard of operation neptune?
the Mice Men? (a little more obscure)
I still have the operation Neptune floppies. That game is HARD for adult gamers, completely ignoring the fact that its intended for 5-8th graders.

Operation Neptune, hells yes...beat the pants off Treasure Mountain.  And yeah, it's hard, that last level on Expert was nasty.

KG

i never beat the last level, no matter what i tried i couldn't beat it. so i gave up assuming it was unwinnable XD

If I remember correctly, the easiest/only way I remember to do it is to dive straight down the entire left side of the shark area in one go.

General Discussion / Re: The Metal Thread

I've been trying to copy Hammerfall lately to try to get my playing style out of this rut I have where I sound like a bad imitation of Possessed. Can anyone suggest anything like Hammerfall?

Hmm...possibly Dream Evil, or Avantasia, but not sure if that's quite it.

And yes, guys, that "ninja metal" made me cringe too.  :P

Of course, that does require malice on the part of the cop, but then, any cop that's willing to bust someone for possession of pot certainly has plenty of that to go around...

Enforcing the law because you would otherwise lose your job is malice?  Seriously?

... and pretty soon the comments section on youtube has erupted into flames.

Let's keep it on youtube and play nice here though, guys, no need to argue over what is and isn't a genre.

In other news, since we had Viking metal and Pirate metal posted already, I went looking for Ninja metal:
