DF General Discussion / Re: The Magmawiki Project
« on: April 26, 2010, 08:39:46 pm »
Are there even any planned features that will break in IE?

Out of curiosity, how much load is there on the wiki now and what kind of hardware hosts it?

I block around the end of the first year. Once the frenzy of initial setup is done, and I've got a big pool of migrants I get overwhelmed thinking of all the different things to do.

I do the same thing in mid-game in Chess. ;)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do I get a pile of bones?
« on: April 15, 2010, 01:33:40 pm »
In every fort I make an indoor stockpile for just bones, shells and skulls. Outdoor is a normal refuse stockpile that prohibits bones, shells and skulls.
This is no longer possible in DF2010.  Bones, shells, and skills no longer have their own categories on the refuse stockpile selection screen.  You have to make a stockpile for 'body parts', which will also collect cartilage and hair and other useless material.
I stand corrected. Did you mean 'remains' though?

No, it's definately body parts.

Ah so you have to leave the entire category enabled now? Does that mean you get chunks or are those gone also?

I guess I need to just play through the new version more. I've been waiting for the merge to get my zooming and resizing back.

Then you never lose the bones on the season change and you don't have to worry about miasma inside.

The settings menu for stockpiles allows you to be very specific about what goes in them. For bones/shells/skulls just make a refuse pile and then in the settings menu forbid all three categories under the refuse section (Item Types, Corpses, Body Parts) and then re-enable just bones, shells and skulls in the Item Types category. For the outside stockpile leave everything enabled and then go and disable just the bones/shells/skulls.

I also sometimes enable fresh raw hide for the indoor stockpile if I have an active tanner.

DF General Discussion / Re: Depressing bug tracker
« on: April 14, 2010, 06:42:55 pm »
Is it just me, or does reading through the bugtracker and seeing just how many bugs there are sadden you on the inside as much as it does me?

I'm aware that a majority of them are duplicates, but still... saddening.

I'm a software tester so not really, quite the reverse actually. If you think about where the game is in development, still very early alpha if you consider all the extra stuff thats yet to be developed, the fact that you can start up DF and have some awesome fun with it right now if you want is pretty damn encouraging to me. Sure there is a lot missing and a lot of outstanding issues with what is there but still... if only the things at work worked nearly as well this early before release, my life would be so much less stressful. :P

haha I was just thinking something similar. At least we know they won't all be deferred and lied to about how they are 'As Designed'.

Replaced by the burrow and alert functionality, I believe.

All features are on all embarks now. It's just a matter of how deep you want to go.

Huh, and here I am thinking that's awfully young for a dwarf. Tolkien has conditioned me to think of them having longer lifespans than that.

mediawiki is evil

I wonder if the 'Dwarf Fortress Community' would qualify for a Confluence community license? ;)

The previous version was ported to SDL and was cross platform (see stickied post about 40d19).

This work has not been merged into the new release yet but is on the 'short list' of things to do, so expect it within a month* or so.

I've built a dock. Any idea how to turn this into a farm?

Just dig out one of those columns next to your dock, build a pump, man it, mud!

III.B.2: Ability to send your army or part of your army out into the world map (part of Core27)

Since the dev log doesn't explain a lot about the various Cores, I assumed something like this was in the offing after a year and a half of development.  When exactly is it supposed to come in anyhow?  Maybe the wiki has something about the cores...

I recently read through the dev log from the d40 release and basically* what happened was he chose to break save compatibility to fix some fundamental issues preventing further work on the Army Arc. Now, because breaking save compatibility is a Big Deal he wanted to fit in as much fundamental work as possible at the same time. In hindsight this proved to be a massive undertaking and significantly slowed the project. This has been acknowledged by Toady as a harsh lesson.

Where things stand now is he's finally finished the save breaking work, for now at least, and laid the foundation for relatively rapid development of more Core features. So we should see a cycle of bug fixes for awhile, followed by much smaller chunks of new functionality.

*I kinda forget the details, and old dev log is gone now.

Dev page says 'under construction' so I figure he's sorting it all out into something more sensible.
