Hey, come on. DFPongo was really not the right target for that image.

Now - i am watching what people are trying to do with 31, and this is generally devastating so far.
Version is far away from d40 - 31 is not expanded d40 + things i hoped to see, like d40+docs, real layers generating engine(like d40's), with just fixed milking and better military - it is engine for making..well, diablo clones, almost.

Are we playing the same game? Because you sure didn't describe the new version.

I am pretty shocked at the attitude of some of these people. Maybe that's what you start to get when it starts to attracts greater numbers of players.

I'm not surprised. Most people haven't been exposed software development processes, much less one that's driven by one man and his cat. Add in the fact that things get prioritized according to what Toady wants to do and lots of people feel left out in the cold.

I do think Toady should turn DF into more of a game engine and set things up so the people who are interested (and there seem to be a lot) can provide the 'front end' as it were.

DF General Discussion / Re: Migrant skills

This was added in at the very end according to the dev log.

I also ended up making reclaim civilian, at least for now, since there were too many issues with starting out a bunch of pre-made squads. This also messed up soldier migrants, but I've compensated for that by giving migrants higher and more varied skills in general, including the skills of a former soldier at times.

I got a High Master Fish Dissector that was also an Accomplished Surgeon. Another migrant was a Accomplished Glassmaker in addition to Proficient Axedwarf/Fighter/Shield User/Armor User but then I lost him to a strange mood. :(

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Undead Fire Imps

I believe if you carve a fortification into existing stone within your tunnel that will keep them out.

Just dig your tunnel right up to the edge of the pipe, but 2 spaces away from breach smooth then carve a fortification. Then channel the last tile from above to breach the pipe and immediately floor that channel over. Now you should be safe unless they can break through the floor.

DF General Discussion / Re: DF Stat facebook app?
« on: March 30, 2010, 11:34:42 am »
As a proof of concept how about a simple image server that can be linked to in a sig or avatar on this forum? I expect that would get much more rapid uptake as well.

The components that gather DF statistics and put them on a web/app/db server would be unchanged. Just instead of publishing to a fb app create a small image and/or banner that summarizes the stats.

Ouch. Yeah I think green glass is only good for magma pumps.

I agree that it shouldn't be happening, but since it apparently IS happening create some stockpiles for iron and flux next to the forge.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Statues, room quality and dwarf happiness
« on: March 26, 2010, 03:42:31 pm »
First, you should check the wiki for more comprehensive answers.

1. I have a 'royal quality' dining room, which seems to give dwarves very happy thoughts ('dined in a legendary dining room'). Will adding even more statues and valuable stuff to the room improve the happyness of dwarves dining there even more, or is a room's happiness-giving effect capped at a certain level at 'royal quality'?

Pretty sure that's as good a thought as you're going to get in that case.

2. I understand that putting high quality statues in bedrooms etc. will improve the room quality and make dwarves who sleep there happier (to a certain point?). But will putting statues all around the fortress in hallways etc. improve general dwarf happiness, or will dwarves only get happiness from statues in statue gardens, bedrooms, dining rooms etc? Same with smoothing/engraving the floor and walls in random hallways, will that improve dwarf happiness or just total fortress value?

Random stuff like that will have an effect on dwarves. I'm not sure what quality triggers it but artifacts definitely do. You'll see stuff like 'adminred a fine door lately', etc.

Again, you should study the wiki. It contains vast knowledge. Learn it, live it, love it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mini-project
« on: March 25, 2010, 09:09:59 pm »
My favorite mini-project was a 'recreation area' made from an underground pool. I am actually really proud of it, as it combined a lot of cool features and used an existing map feature.

Here's a pic I took after reclaim, the dwarves entered the dining area from the z-level above, there was a waterfall in the little room in the center they had to pass through first. Floors are all green glass and the z-level above was floored over with green glass except for above the dining room which was open.

I remember reading once about someone who lined their entrance road with skulls.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Complications with a river and chasm...
« on: March 24, 2010, 11:27:34 pm »
I was thinking about building some floors across the chasm, and then walls on the sides so it doesn't spill, but is this possible? Do I have to build three rows of floors across the chasm to put the walls on? Can I even make a floor across the chasm? Can a bridge be my floor, and can I build walls on bridges?

You could do it with bridges or floors, and the walls get built next to the floor/bridge, not on them.

You could put a retractible bridge in there and after hooking it to a lever you'd have a nice off switch in case of downstream flooding that would just dump the water into the chasm. Or you could do it with a raising bridge and just block the water off completely with a lever.

I'm currently working on a giant wooden barrel that I'm going to fill with magma.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My first dragon.. Quite FUN experience.
« on: March 24, 2010, 05:30:38 pm »
Dragons are quite Fun in my experience as well. The first time I caught one I built an arena on the bottom level for it that I planned to throw goblins into. Unfortunately I decided to 'secure' the arena with a pair of lead floodgates. I released the dragon, watched it go straight to the floodgates, melt them, and then start climbing up into my fort.

It came out right in the middle of a finished goods stockpile and started a huge fire. Unfortunately a Champion wrestler on my fortress guard simply walked over and strangled it to death. :( That was the last fort I used fortress guards in.

I'd love to see access logs for requests to the forums and dev_now page over the last couple months.

I know I contribute about 500 requests a day. ;)
