DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My Fortess has a mascot
« on: August 17, 2014, 10:54:29 pm »
I call it that, because this named mountain lion has shown up in artwork all over the fort, including as an image on an artifact glove.  He's laboring in every image.  Since he's so all- pervading, I declared him my mascot for Basementblowing.  Anyone else have a mascot?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Rocky starts
« on: August 11, 2014, 09:24:57 pm »
So, yesterday I started a fort with 40.07.  I get things designated for digging, unpause...

...and immediately I get a message about Urist Mcminer being too horrified to dig.

I was all WTF is this now? and get a flood of cancellations and horrified dwarves and my fishery worker has been struck down.  checking the combat logs, I see that an alligator (they had embarked damn near on top of him) had killed the dwarf and a dog right in front of the others.  he killed one more dog, then left the map after earning the name Desireentreaty.  The Miner and the Carpenter had been the dead dwarf's friends, and were understandably upset.  I almost abandoned, figuring someone would freak out and start the world's smallest tantrum spiral.  but I did', I let things take their course, and now I have a nice little fort with 25 dwarves and an artifact bow.

Any other stories about doomed and near-doomed beginnings in this version?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / well this is a win/win situation!
« on: July 22, 2014, 11:46:55 am »
I just created a new world for 40.04.  There's two Dwarf civs left in my world (I did a 550 year history) and one is at war with elves, the other is at war with goblins.

This can only end in comedy.

If someone's interested in the world gen, tell me what I need to do to put it up for download.  I have a job interview, but I could do it when I get back.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarveswon't engrave memorial slabs
« on: July 11, 2014, 06:45:27 pm »
Do they no longer need engraving, or is this a bug??

I had a migrant climb a tree and fall out within less than five rt moments of arriving.  One of her kids followed suit.  I have slabs, nothing is forbidden, blah blah, but they won't engrave them.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Worldgen won't stop when I tell it to
« on: July 11, 2014, 12:02:20 pm »
Worldgen, what are you doing?  Worldgen, stahp!

Seriously, I wanted to stop at Year 100, but it was all "Um, nope!" and ignored my attempts to make it stop, already.  I tried several times. so now I'm patiently (or not) waiting for it to gen a full 250 years.  Good thing I didn't set it for 1500 :D  BTW, this is 40.02 we're talking about.

Anyone else see this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Your first 40.01 Artifact--post it here!

Mine was a perfect morion gem, with no interesting details other than morion spikes.  To rub even more salt into the wound, it was a possession.  Oh well, since I hastily threw a jeweler's shop up outside, it can serve as kobold bait!

Anyone else have a mood?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarves won't stockpile wood 0.40.01
« on: July 08, 2014, 09:13:08 am »
Just what it says.  The wood isn't forbidden, it is accessible, I made sure hauling was on, made sure I was putting up the right sort of stockpile.  They won't touch wood (ahem).  Things like food get stockpiled just fine, thank God.  I'm picking it's because of the new types of wood, maybe.  Anyone else seeing this?  I will be making a bug report on it, just wanted to see if anyone else has had this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / First World Problems--DF Style
« on: February 06, 2014, 10:52:13 am »
I want to start a new fort in Dwarf Fortress.  But the new version could be out any day now.  But I want to play.  But I would need to make a new fort.  Maybe I SHOULD make a new fort, because by the law of perversity, Toady will be done and the new version will come out. Then again, trying to game the LoP into working in one's favor almost never works.  Anyone else having this?  Are you waiting, or saying 'screw it' and playing anyway?

DF Community Games & Stories / Boulderthunders-Dead Due to Corrupted Save
« on: December 04, 2013, 03:44:19 pm »
Hi guys!  This will be my first-ever story fort, possibly to be a succession fort if I generate enough interest. I'm using Deathswords Dwemer mod, Nchardahrk.  It's still a work in progress, so there might be some bumps along the way.  Everyone is welcome, regardless of your level of familiarity with the Elder Scrolls Universe.

So what are Dwemer?  The easiest explanation is that they are the dwarfiest elves, ever. Their name means 'Deep Elves'. They eschewed nature and magic in favor of science and technology, they have beards, and in the province of Skyrim, the local Dwemer populace enslaved an entire race of elves, the Falmer.  In Morrowind, their ruins show that they had a strong understanding of using everyone's favorite cleanser, magma, to power their machines. They also built robots of a sort.  If you want a better, more in-lore explanation, Putnam here on the forums has a strong knowledge of lore, especially for the Dwemer.

I refer to them in the past tense for good reason: they're gone.  In the TES lore, they tried to create their own god, and something went terribly wrong.  Talk about failed megaprojects!  In the mod, however, that never happened.  The Dwemer still exist. People who enjoy and appreciate TES lore will enjoy this mod, but the loremongers will probably run away screaming.

I already have had two groups of Migrants, bringing us to 20 Dwemer (this includes five kids). I played the first season, as you can see, and if you want to be Dwemered, just let me know.  The roster of Dwemer is below:

Miner, Male
Miner, Female
Trader and expedition Leader, Male
Carpenter, Female
Bookeeper/Farmer, Female
Mason, Male
Potter, Male
Potter, Female
Glazer, Male
Surgeon, Female
Stonecrafter, Female
Random Dwemer kids, about 5 of them

Just tell me who you want, and you'll be Dwemered :)  First to respond will be the next write up's Expedition Leader

Also, while there is flux, there are no metals to be found anywhere, so far.  Oh, cruel irony!  Invaders are off for now.  I justify this as my piddly fort isn't attracting the interest of the bad guys yet.  Anyway, on with the good stuff!

17 Morning Star, !st Era, in the Year 81
From the Journal of Egish Turremeht, Expedition Leader

I'd thought I'd made it pretty damn clear to the Tonal Architect back home (Home being Ixtam Aud, the Labors of Chastity) that I wasn't leadership material.  He seemed to think that my way with people and longer fuse than most Dwemer makes me a good candidate to lead the expedition.  Just because I'm friendly and a good listener and a decent trader doesn't mean I can lead.  I've known Nix Hounds with better organizational abilities.

"What if we get eaten by alits and it's all my fault?"

"I suppose you wouldn't be in any position to worry about it any longer, now would you?"  So then Akkaqh gave me his best "I have spoken." look, and so here I am, out in the middle of Dagon only knows where.  Fetcher.  Aqqakh, not Dagon.  It won't end well to call the Lord of Destruction a fetcher.

Anyway, unrolled a map, and showed us where we would be settling:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I let everyone decide our group name, which considering that we are now down officially in the records of Ixtam Aud as 'The Tools of Clasping', this may have been a mistake.  I should have known, seeing the smirk on Lelek's face that it was intended to be lewd.  Nothing to be done for it now, I suppose.

I insisted on choosing the fortress's name myself, and have called it "Emelsttelz",  Boulderthunders.  I imagine that once we have sufficient numbers of Dwemer Centurions and Sphere Centurians stomping and rolling about the place, it will be very suitable, indeed.

The trip went rather well, much to my pleasant surprise.  The area, though extremely hot, has enough trees, grazing fodder, and water, what with there being a huge lake to our east.  though of course geothermal energy is superior to that of water, I imagine we will be making grand use of the power of the lake in due time.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Everyone got to work right away, at little urging from me.  I suppose that was mostly due to all the pent-up boredom and energy, not to mention the desire to not be eaten by alits, than my own leadership.  Ah, well, as long as it gets done, I'm happy.    Gado and Abelis got to work digging out a sizeable area in the hillside, and Catoka is hacking down trees.  The horses have been pastured, and our small flock of chickens will soon have nestboxes.  So far, so good.

A short while later, I spotted a Cliff Racer near the lake.  Disgusting creatures.  I avoid them whenever I can. It flies around for a bit, then departs, thank Azura.

10th of Sun's Dawn

Time flies!  Been so busy haven't been saying much here.  Work continues.  we now have a flock of ravens in the area.  Though annoying, they're basically harmless.  I ordered  Craftsmer Workshop, Masonry, and Carpenter's Shop to be built.  We're getting tired of sleeping on bare sand, sitting on the sand, and if I don't also order a butcher and tannery built, we'll be eating sand.

16th of Sun's Dawn

Gado and Abelis, would the two of you please do more than mine out more than one cubic meter of sand before deciding you need a snack?  Thank you.

At least you got back to work quickly!  We really need to find stone so we can get some crap--crafts--traded to the caravans.  Aaaaand now they've gone for a drink.  Rall, I know woodworking isn't your thing, but could you make up a few wooden trinkets until we find some stone or some bones?  Thanks!

25th of Sun's Dawn

Hegnira.  I gave the order to make beds back on the 10th.  It's now the 25th.  How many beds have you made?

One.

I'll be taking that one for myself, thank you.  If you want one, work faster!  Bal's Balls, I've seen Sloads move faster than you.  Sigh.  I couldn't lead ants to a picnic.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

12th of First Seed

Hooray!  The miners tell me they've hit siltstone.  Not the most glamorous material, I'll admit, but it's something.  Rall will be pleased, and our horses can continue their lives.  Also, pink tourmaline.

25th of Rain's Hand

The Cliff Racer has been found dead.  None of us killed it, but it is dead nonetheless.  Catoka said she spotted what might be a harpy off in the distance.  The Cliff Racer sounds better already.

Gado and Abelis continue to have  ADD.  Still no actual stone dug out.  I hope they'll enjoy drinking water, because it will be all we will have if we don't have crafts to trade.

7th of Second Seed

Migrants.  A surgeon, her husband, the Glazer, and three adorable children.  Maybe one of the kids would like to give leadership a go?  They can't be any worse at it.

Mystery solved!  I found bits of Racer plume and blood on our Spider Centurion.  Good boy!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

28th of Second Seed

We now have proper bedrooms.  Of course they're still full of rocks, but I hesitate to give orders to move them all until Winter.  Considering how some Dwemer get over-immersed in their work, I don't want the lot of us to be hauling rocks like our lives depended on it while the caravan gets tired of waiting and leaves.  Also, our new doctor informs me that there are kangaroos in the area.  I'm hoping our next group of migrants bring a hunter.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

20th of Midyear

Rall is turning out some very nice crafts  Very nice indeed!  Who is that handsome fellow, I wonder?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

5th of Sun's Height

Catoka (who is also our Bookeeper) has informed me that alcohol stores are dangerously low.  I approach Lak, our Surgeon, while she is drinking and appoint her our Brewer.  She seemed agreeable enough, probably because she would be as unhappy as the rest of us without booze.   The caravan will come at the end of Autumn.  This year can't end soon enough for me.

11th of Sun's Height

Guess who still doesn't have a Trade Depot?  Truly a conundrum that not even Hermaeous Mora could solve.  Half of us seem to be on break, but I figure I can throw one together quickly enough... right after I stockpile these rocks.

8th of Last Seed

Good think Lak is so on top of things with the booze.  We just had a married couple and their three little ones arrive.  The two adults are both Potters.  If I can get some good clay and a kiln going, we can get some nice ceramics for trade.  Speaking of, the Depot is done!

11th of Hearthfire

Preliminary surveys of local minerals show that there is little no metal to be found anywhere on site or within a reasonable distance of it.  That isn't good news.  we'll be forced to import all of our metals from home.  If we get lucky and the caverns are generous, then that won't be necessary.

16th of Hearthfire

The caravan has come!  Of course, this coincides with my seasonal break.  I will just have to entrust someone else to get what we need at a decent price for the winter.  Vile help us: it's Gado.  I tell him 'Buy low, sell high' and just get us the basics: crafting materials, booze, and food.

We're doomed.

17th of Frostfall

It didn't go well, but it also didn't go as badly as I feared.  I think we might have enough until traders come in the Spring.  My jaw hit the ground when Gado told me they had a wheelbarrow made of Adamantium!  If we could have afforded the 2000 gold they were asking for it, it would even now be sitting in our smelter.  sure, show offs, you've got metal and we don't.

13th Sun's Dusk

We've gone into survival mode: gathering plants, fishing, and so on.  We have to work hard if we're going to make it until Spring.  Azura willing, there won't be anymore migrants until we're stable.Speaking of stables, we had to butcher the horses.  Their hooves also go to good use, in beautifully crafted items.  Their bones are carefully put aside in case one of us is stricken with a sudden creative urge.  Bad enough we have no shells, since there seems to be no turtles nor shellfish to be caught.  That big huge lake, and nothing in it.

We're almost at the end of our first year.  I've not decided to whom I'm turning over the reins, but I do have some thoughts on whom it won't be.

6th Morning Star, 1st Era 82

Spring. By Azura, we made it!  I'm done now. Who's next?

Oh!  One of the potters made a figurine of me, too.  I feel so flattered.  What a most excellent--

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh.  Ew.

The fight with the Cliff Racer and the spider Centurion actually went on for about three pages, but I didn't want to paste three pages of reports in.  If someone wants to see, I'll go ahead and upload them :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Chickens for their.... loyalty?
« on: November 27, 2013, 07:07:09 pm »
I'm sure you might have heard of dogs recently who either won't leave their former owner's grave, or who leave only to return.  All day, every day.  Well, Mebdtoth the Chicken does this.  her owner was a newly adult dwarfette, whom had just become mayor.  In the interest of having a happy mayor, I made a hen available for adoption (she liked chickens for their clucking).

Mayor Catten was killed by a berserk dwarf during The Great Thirst, and when the dust settled, she was promptly put in a coffin.  From that day to this, Mebdtoth sits on or near her coffin, all day, every day, leaving only to eat or drink and lay eggs.  Then she resumes her vigil, waiting for the day that her dwarf friend comes out to play again.

I've never seen a pet or even other dwarves do this before.  Have you?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Your early misconceptions about DF
« on: November 25, 2013, 10:59:39 pm »
Mine:

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

I didn't know you could just assign skills to dwarves and they would do that task even if they had no experience.  I abandoned several forts for forgetting to bring along a carpenter or mason.

That you needed a road before caravans and migrants would come.  I had roads all over the place my first few forts.

If a forgotten Beast can't fly, and I didn't make a path directly up to my fort, it couldn't get in.

What were yours?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dang it, I do SO have seeds for that location!
« on: November 25, 2013, 06:26:30 pm »
Okay, here's an issue I'm having with farming.

Seeds are available for aboveground farming.  They're in a stockpile.  Dwarves can reach them.  they aren't forbidden, dumped, in the magma, on Mars, or otherwise inaccessible.  I'm not getting 'Urist McFarmer' needs seeds' spam.  what I am getting is the dumbass farm plot (aboveground) telling me that there's no seeds for the location.  Not for any season, not for any seed.  I have piles and piles of aboveground seed plants.  I can plant them in the location, or it wouldn't have let me build the plot to begin with.  But the plots keep telling me there's no seeds for the location.

I've tried deconstructing the plots and rebuilding, no go.  Any thoughts?  Only thing I didn't try was to deconstruct the stockpile.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Oh crap...Oh crap--it's dead already?
« on: November 19, 2013, 11:05:03 am »
Talk about anti-climactic.

I had an FB arrive in the caverns, a towering quadruped of faint yellow diamond, breathing frost.  he stomped around the land areas, then ended up in the lake right below where my up/down staircase opened up.  I hadn't managed to hatch cover all the stairs yet (got distracted by two gobbo sieges).  I suddenly get injury reports, and there he is, down in the lake, trying to hawk frozen loogies up at my dwarves.  I'd made a well nearby, my dwarves were meeting there...so I quickly freed up the room and ordered them to burrows...

...aaaaand they were all stuck, because the frozen FB breath had created blockages.  I had about 50 dwarves in there, too.  So they all started blocking up, smashing together, like something out of a panic scene in a movie.  there was a diagonal path around the frozen breath, but not all of them could get through.  So I try having my miners dig out a path, but keep getting "Oh teh noes scary!" cancellation spam.  Meanwhile, the trapped dwarves are flashing thirsty, and I was thinking back to the event a few years' prior where 3/4 of my 160 dwarves had died of thirst... the military obviously can't reach it and I was doubting they could kill it anyway..

Finally, it makes its way up and in (how, I don't know, it doesn't fly, maybe all FB's are related to Jason Voorhees and can teleport) and I send my military after it.  While they're making their way down, one of my engravers beats on it with her fists, and a dog is chewing on it.  The two of them manage some significant damage on it.  Then the military comes in and..... it's gone.  Dead after less than a minute of real time.

Aren't FB's made of diamond supposed to be super tough?  I think that one was made of those plastic gems on cheap dress-up toys instead :P  Mind, most of my military is legendary Axe and or Hammer Lords in steel and bronze.

feel free to share your own anticlimactic encounters!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fell Mood failed
« on: November 13, 2013, 02:41:48 pm »
Long story short, most of my fort of 165 died to thirst, the rest were taken by insanity, including a ton of Berserks.  so this guy gets a fell mood, claims a tannery...then does nothing.  I had about 25 dorfs left not including him, so he seriously couldn't find someone to use for his project?  Anyone else ever see a fell mood fail?

I had a previous one happen with no problem, resulting in a Dwarf Bone bin.  BTW, the fort is recovering now.  More Fun will ensue!
