DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Why so damn many possesed moods?
« on: November 13, 2013, 11:30:10 am »
Out of my last few successful forts, altogether, I had a total of about 20 moods.  13 of these were possessed moods, which means no skill increase, of course.  Why so damned many?  Are possessions weighted to occur more frequently?  Does anyone else experience this?

My last siege, I think my dorfs took out the goblin warband leader.  In addition, their civ description says "This land has no important leaders" now.  I still get ambushes and thieves showing up, though.  Are these just ragtag groups that were already en route when the leader died?  Or are ambushes/thieves not affected by whether or not the leader still lives?  I admit that either way, I'm pleased my half-assed poorly equipped (no ability to make steel or bronze, and I almost never get enough things that I request) military has pretty much wiped them out.  Maybe.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Well, so much fo that...
« on: October 06, 2012, 03:07:23 pm »
The FB that had come to visit my fort, and I did the poll, and was going to post results?

Damn thing wandered out of the caverns and disappeared :(

Now that was really anticlimactic.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Fate of Firegears--YOU make the call!
« on: September 28, 2012, 02:51:15 pm »
In seven days, your vote will decide the fate of Firegears!

I thought I had invaders turned off, but no!  A giant Raven with green feathers and deadly secretions is roaming the caverns.  He currently can't get to my dwarves because there's no path for him yet...but one can be easily made.

I like my fort, but I'm getting bored.  It's in its ninth year, has 3 million wealth, 117 dwarves, and my military consists of 12 hardened individuals wearing random armor (No iron, nor flux, has ever been found).  They have a few candy weapons, an artifact spear (copper), some artifact steel leggings, an artifact cap, and an artifact bone helm.

I am fully comfortable with any of the above outcomes, and I decided to do it this way because it will be fun, and Fun.  the poll will close next Friday, and that's the decision I'll go with--no takebacks, no savescums.  The outcome will be posted in the Community Forts and Stories forum.  I could have posted it there but I was fail :P

EDIT:

Today is the day, but I have to work all day.  Voting is now closed, and the "Send in the Military" option wins!

I'll get to it some time this weekend, I hope.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Why won't you idiots stockpile?
« on: September 27, 2012, 04:48:28 pm »
I just ragequit a new fort because the morons wouldn't stockpile food, and all the fish caught rotted.  There was nothing forbidden, inaccessible, all the other stockpiles worked, I didn't have anything weird turned on/off, no mods.

I tried remaking stockpiles elsewhere, I tried turning hauling on/off.  The only thing they would move was a lone barrel of meat.  Anything I missed?  I don't want this contaminating all my forts.

Maybe.

About two hours ago, a kid got a Stonecrafting mood just as a HUGE (40 goblins plus critters and Lawgiver) siege hit.  Most of my dorfs died wiping them out, and this kid is STILL gathering rocks of various kinds, including gold nuggets.  He has eight pages of rocks so far and shows no signs of stopping.

I'm wiped out, but when I get up tomorrow I'll start up DF and if the kid finishes before the fort falls apart (I have 5 adults about 25 kids or so) I'll post the results.

Or, which has precedence for making nobles happy: the item's value, or it being a favored material?

My count (who is pretty chill except for demanding bracelets and crossbows all the time) is getting new digs.  His favorite materials for stuff are green glass and copper, but gold is more valuable, and my dwarves are basically Urist McScroogeMcDuck and can swim in it, because there's so damn much of it.

The wiki had nothing to say that I could find over which would be better and why: preferred material vs more valuable material.  So now that I've done my homework, I'm asking you guys.

Yeah, I could just arrange an unfortunate meeting between he and Mr. Magma, but he's pretty cool and one of my original seven, so I like him.  For now.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A Forgotten Beast is YOU!
« on: September 10, 2012, 08:22:04 pm »
I had an idea to describe myself as if I were an FB:

The Forgotten Beast Nyxalinth has come!  A medium-tall humanoid comprised of flesh.  Her body is chubby.  Her long brown hair is wavy.  She fidgets and squirms.  She has an aura of giving and kindness.  Beware her deadly temper!  Nyxalinth is associated with cats, computer games, horror movies, and books.

In the year 1965, Nyxalinth began to wander the earth (lol yes, I'm old :D)

That's just my own way of doing it, if you want to do something more FB-like, go for it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Oh gods...so...much....stuff
« on: September 08, 2012, 04:30:58 pm »
I will endlessly be stockpiling, because today I got pissed at the traders from the Mountainhomes (I was giving them gold crafts, 2-3k profit, and it STILL wasn't enough!) so they got pissy and flounced, and before they could pack everything up, I deconstructed the depot from under them.

I have almost everything a fort of 99 dwarves could ever want now, and then some.

Question is, i know they won't siege over it, but are there any repercussions to this, like even tougher trading next time, or they won't show up anymore?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What fort do you miss most?
« on: September 08, 2012, 10:47:08 am »
I've had many, many forts in the three years I've played, the one I miss most was a 40d fort called Largebusts.  I had 150 dwarves, 50 elite wrestling dwarves included in that count.  They were fighting off invading elves and goblins, dragons, hydras, you name it.  what killed it was boredom.  I still miss that fort, because it had awesome memories for me, and I learned most of how to play from it.  It was 12 years old, and had 12 artifacts, most of which were craft type stuff, but there were some useful things, like a brass spear.

What fort do you miss most, and why?

My fort--the Volcanoes of War--has two *slabs* as its symbol.

This does not bode well.  then again, it's bound to be Fun :D

General Discussion / Ugh, I have a syndrome--ALREADY SAW A DOCTOR
« on: June 22, 2012, 05:23:35 pm »
I haven't been able to eat decently for days, and no one knows what is causing it.  On the plus side, I've lost 5 pounds, and I can certainly afford that.  I'm getting unhappy thoughts from the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet and Gatorade, let me tell you.

What are your favorite things to eat when you have stomach virus/unknown reason for stomach issues?

EDIT:  I wasn't clear.  I did see my doctor.

That goes in with my "No one can figure it out" statement.  They're all like "Dunno, stress maybe?  Follow this diet, kthnxbai."

EDIT 2:  Never mind.  This was stupid.  I'm just grumpy.

So, my room mate adopted a new kitty this weekend past. Her other two had died of old age (unhappy thoughts for us both!) a few months back.

The kitty has adopted me instead.  Carly is slowly warming up to my room mate, and I feel a bit guilty for Carly deciding I'm the human.  If any cat people have had experience with this sort of thing, advice is welcome.

Carly is really cute--calico--and sweet.  She just isn't so sure of my room mate, the one who actually adopter her and paid the fee and so so on.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The dread Necromancer Tower of--Sealpoker?
« on: March 12, 2012, 02:28:25 pm »
Yup, Sealpoker.  Post your crazy Necro Tower names here.

Yeah, it's a kid's game, but it could be fun to do Dwarf Fortress Madlibs.  If you don't remember MadLibs, you can read about them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_Libs

at this stage, I'm just seeing if anyone would be interesting in playing before I put a lot of work into one.  Basically, I'd post a list of what is needed (Noun, Verb, Profession, and so on) and you can pick one.  As an example:

What I need:

Adjective (describes a noun)
Animal
Body Part
Noun

And then, you claim in order:

"I claim animal--wooly mammoth"  and so on

Then I write it up and post the results:

"The Forgotten Beast Snozub has come!  A *grumpy* *woolly mammoth* with a long curling *earlobe*!  Beware its deadly *computer*!"

You get the picture.  Normally, it would be longer, of course.  Any takers?
