DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do you still play 40d?
« on: August 21, 2010, 05:20:06 pm »
I still play 40d, mostly because I'm still getting my head around the military and doing irrigation to work around the farming bug.  But there's loads to like in the new version, so I keep at it. If I had more time, I'd have it down by now.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What got you into Dwarf Fortress?
« on: August 18, 2010, 04:32:39 pm »
Me, I like reading stuff over at http://www.tvtropes.com.  I was reading the section on videogames, and it mentioned Dwarf Fortress. Intrigued, I downloaded the game...

...only to be promptly overwhelmed by it. I didn't touch it again for about 6 months.  Then I found the wiki, followed tutorials, and got a handle on the basics. I'm a visual learner, so I learn better that way than with fiddling around to figure it out myself.

DF Modding / Random Embarking mod--possible?
« on: August 16, 2010, 06:38:50 pm »
I would love to see a mod where you have an option for a completely random embark, dwarves, location and all.

All dwarves would already have skills assigned
The embark could be *anywhere*
Goods/animals randomly assigned

So concieveably, you could wind up with six woodcutters, a soapmaker, and a bonecarver at embark, with 12 cats and a mule, in a freezing terrifying biome.  WITH AQUIFERS.  Make the most of it!

Would such a mod be possible? I can't mod or program my way out of a rope reed sack, alas.

Dear Dorfs,

I don't  want to hear ONE FREAKIN WORD about the miasma that kobold is generating. You're the ones letting him rot away merrily on the steps.  There's plenty of room in the refuse heap, all of you have hauling turned on...go to it! Or maybe you secretly like the stinky?

Confused,

Me

So...what's your note to your dwarves?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Draw your artifacts! No skill required :)
« on: June 22, 2010, 06:08:31 pm »
I have no skill with art, but here's my artifact, anyway.  Mind, I draw worse than a goblin with it's hands burnt off by magma :P

Bukogilish Nabreth Zin-- Chokedcarnages the Skirt of Drying.  It's a rope reed shirt, it has an image of itself on it, and a picture of an ancient Dwarf ruler on it.  it has sardonyx and fox leather on it. Oh, and a bit of microcline. I imagined them being used to create the dwarf's picture on it.

I follow all the instructions: delete the contents of folders, put the DD stuff in, don't overwrite, etc., but I get messages about missing textures for this or that every time.  Has anyone else had this trouble, or am I following the instructions wrong? If someone using this mod can tell me exactly what they did to make it work, I'd be grateful.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / An ELF? In MY Fortress?
« on: December 25, 2009, 04:13:01 pm »
What Feckery is this?

I have a good fort going. Their symbol is appropriately dwarfly, IMO.

But their parent civilization? Their symbol is an elf. An ELF. What is the dwarf world coming to?

Though he could be my civ's version of Cacame.  I'll have to check the Legends.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Time passes too quickly!
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:06:09 pm »
Ever since I installed the Mayday tileset, I have had no music, but worse, time seems to pass 5x as fast. Which is good for getting things done, but bad in terms of being ready for goblin siges, etc.

Is there any way I can slow things down a bit? Get my music back?  I really love the graphics, so I am loathe to give it up, but will if I have to.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Map with no creatures
« on: December 21, 2009, 09:06:05 pm »
I just embarked on a marshland map. No creatures at all, other than vermin. Is this normal, or did I somehow acquire a bug?  Anyone else ever experience this?

I have had only one failed mood happen out in an even remotely interesting way. My hunter got a mood, claimed a workshop, and didn't have turtle shell. He went beserk and ran amok, injuring a dwarf. His own hunting dogs chased him out of the fort to a pond and tore him to bits.

The others have been kind of dull: they went insane, ran around taking off their clothes and babbling, then finaly drowned themselves or died of hunger/thirst.

i think so, anyway.

First of all, creatures caught in traps: how do i move them to the zoo I have set up?

Goblins caught in cage traps--same question.

i did try to sell a captured goblin to the merchants, but apparently the goblin got out and i only sold the cage.

Can you sell caged creatures to merchants?

in other news, been attack by goblin ambushes 4 times today alone. Woah.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Saved by the cavalry!
« on: April 25, 2009, 06:49:33 pm »
Well, human merchants, anyway.

i got my first goblin ambush ever just as i was getting my first ballistae set up. (Yup, I'm a noob.) .  i thought 'Oh crap, I wasn't ready!' but steele myself for the inevitable bloody conflict. They killed my fisherdwarf, and some glassmaker guy (no big loss, i have no sand), as i hurried to try to finish assembling the ballistae.

A human caravan arrives and wipes out all but one with their guards. My axe dwarf knocks the last one into next week. Well, his upper half went into next week, the lower stayed where he whacked him.

On the one hand, I was sort of glad, but on the other hand i was terribly annoyed at my dwarves being deprived of battle, win or lose.

Anyone else have this happen? I'm guessing so, but tell me your glorious stories so I can enjoy them vicariously :P
