DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: This IS more fun!
« on: April 26, 2009, 06:47:30 pm »
Been attacked by Gobbo ambushes four times today alone. Each time i recruited EVERYONE and sent them into battle. Dorfs and Goblins dead all over. Came out of it with three Dorfs I gave special nicknames to: Bowbane (she killed an especially annoying goblin Marksman) and GoblinSlayer (killed three, and he was a recruited peasant!) and Smasher, who killed a human Pikeman the Gobbos had on their side. The human in question had a special name, i forget what. Amazingly, only one person out of the bunch looks like he might tantrum. A kid even lost both 'rents and is happy as a clam. 'Gee, sucks that mom and dad died, but that ballista out front is TOTALLY FUCKING AWESOME, YAY!'  :)

MUCH more fun this way!

i think so, anyway.

First of all, creatures caught in traps: how do i move them to the zoo I have set up?

Goblins caught in cage traps--same question.

i did try to sell a captured goblin to the merchants, but apparently the goblin got out and i only sold the cage.

Can you sell caged creatures to merchants?

in other news, been attack by goblin ambushes 4 times today alone. Woah.

The fort I recently abandoned was the one where I learned about trading and making stuff. Rather fittingly it was called Fortunecrafts.

my current fort is called The Muscled Towers...

Well, human merchants, anyway.

i got my first goblin ambush ever just as i was getting my first ballistae set up. (Yup, I'm a noob.) .  i thought 'Oh crap, I wasn't ready!' but steele myself for the inevitable bloody conflict. They killed my fisherdwarf, and some glassmaker guy (no big loss, i have no sand), as i hurried to try to finish assembling the ballistae.

A human caravan arrives and wipes out all but one with their guards. My axe dwarf knocks the last one into next week. Well, his upper half went into next week, the lower stayed where he whacked him.

On the one hand, I was sort of glad, but on the other hand i was terribly annoyed at my dwarves being deprived of battle, win or lose.

Anyone else have this happen? I'm guessing so, but tell me your glorious stories so I can enjoy them vicariously :P

I had a newly arrived peasant dash off to a crafts shop and produce an epic stone toy boat to end all toyboats today.

I thoguht it was lame until I saw it was worth about 77k dwarfbucks.

You don't.  All too often.

You mine them, make them, get them from trading, or he goes insane.

If you can't fulfill his desires with what you have, then immediately make arrangements to be able to lock him into whatever workshop they've claimed. If it's an "open" workshop, build walls around it and put up a door.

If you don't have what he needs then he can't make his item, and the resulting deaths will be fun (read "bad").

I got lucky with my first (so far only) failed mood.

My hunter got a mood, grabbed some leather, and dashed off to the workshop, which was fairly far off. His hunting dogs followerd. An hour of real time later, his mood failed and he went berserk.  He kills a hunting dog, and the other kills him with one mighty chomp.

I just recently had my first artifact ever in a now-defunct fortress. I forget what it was called, Something The Confederation of Organs, and it was a maple coffin, bound with bands of maple and ash.  I think it was worth about 3k. No cool decorations or anything.  Laaaaaaaaame.

In my new fort, I have a chert bracelet, decorated with chert, with dwarves surrounding a cougar. It was made by a peasant in my first immigrant wave, and she's now a legendary stoneworker. :D The bracelet is cool, though, images of it turn up all over the fortress.  Even trading caravans bring stuff decorated with images of chert bracelets. I've adopted it as the symbol of my fort :D  it's worth about 14k.

Artifact #2 is a dogbone chain that menaces with spikes of dog bone.  Worth about 3k, and gave me a legendary bonecarver.  I imagine it serves to keep the dogs from peeing on the floor and getting up on the couch :D  'Bad dog!  See what happened to Fluffy?'

# 3 was a posession induced copper cage that menaces with spikes of...cloth.  Ooh, poky!  Worth about 3k. i have it on display in the statue garden.
