DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: May 13, 2017, 01:03:28 pm »
My craftsdorf decided it was a good idea to start a fight with a capybara. It didn't end well. am building a slab, because that's all he deserves with that stupidity.

the capaybara's nose got sliced off before she fled the map. The nose is sitting in my refuse heap now. Good thing I'm not in a reanimating biome. Then again, what is a nose going to do, sniff everyone to death?

There are many like it, but this one is mine. Just covers enough to ease the initial "OMG WHAT IS THIS AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THIS!1111!eleventyone" that afflict newcomers.

I'll eventually do a follow up article. What would you cover next?

I had an Emerald Hatch Cover.

...

I'm all for bling, but the guy used a single cut emerald, and nothing else. It must have been the tiniest hatch cover ever.

could also be the thinnest, if he cut the emerald into paper-thin layers :D

Not necessarily...

Job hunting has been a huge pain lately. One ad in particular claims to be for customer service, but it's really outside insurance sales. So to alleviate my frustration, I ran their latest crapsack ad through the Travesticator.

I have some 'Game over in five Minutes Or Less' moments (due to undead yaks and harpies and flooding) but this fort was actually very successful. Until THEY came.

I was playing d40, and using a mod called Dig Dwarfier. It added orcs and dark elves as invaders.  No initial problems, I was ready for the orcs.

Except that my legendary axedorf lost friends and family and went berserk before I could wall him in.

He started slaughtering everyone in the fort. I managed to lock two badly injured dorfs--my mason and carpenter--away safely until the caravan showed. Or such was my plan

Dark elves attacked. Urist McBerserkypants kicked their asses, and then went wandering the halls of my fort like a hairier version of Jack Nicholson in The Shining. My carpenter and mason began the slow process of starving and thirsting. I didn't want to watch until the end--the caravan wasn't going to make it in time--so I abandoned.

No matter how much booze you have, a huge migrant wave will inevitably show up and drink it all right before all the water freezes.

A. More white is probably worse for headaches.
B. Legibility is debatable, but I find it harder to read dark on light.
C. The game was made with light on dark in mind, so it's gonna look inverted.
D. I disagree.

Having said that...

USE WITH CAUTION!

~EDIT~
Maybe a brighter background color with a regular color scheme would work better?
Like a blue ~25% brightness, for example...
I should mention that color scheme above is based on Taffer's, with all color values halved and black/white inverted.

A. Depends on your brain/eyes, really. It is bright on black that triggers mine.
B. YMMV...
C. I know, and it does, which is unfortunate. Still trying to make it work.
D. Maybe you're right!

And, here's a screenshot of your scheme (with Wanderlust tileset):

Ain't very legible, sadly: the colors all blend together, looking grey. To compare, here's what I've been playing with, also Taffer-based:

It's not... perfect, but it's playable and doesn't give me a headache.
I've tried basing it all in blue (riffing off Brogue's color palette, if you're familiar with that game), but my attempts were nothing to write home about. It could look good though I think.

the first makes me think of early Mac graphics, circa 1980s.

Wait a sec, that's a real raw tag. There's no travesty here!

Whoops! I still thought it was kind of funny in a "well, duh!" way.

Nyxalinth was bored recently. She completed a fine set of travesties recently, using her name, her friend's name, and their fandoms (Devo and Hannibal tv series) mixed with Toady's updates.

So, I work at a call center. Because time and the bare-faced horror of American culture unleashed without consequence have ground us down to bitter, powdery husks of who we once were, we keep a list of funny/awesome names that cross our desks.

I fed these already amusing/super cool names through the travestificator.

On the one hand, I'm glad to see this problem resolved.  On the other hand...
I'm still unsure of when and how his teeth got there, but that's the least of my concerns now.
By Armok I love Dwarf Fortress.

I was just about to say that.

I hate this kind of cancellation spam, though, even without Soundsense. Thanks, game, I already know that Urist McSockFetish can't reach that sock. You don't need to remind me ten billion times.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: !!SCIENCE!! Interrupted strange mood
« on: November 30, 2016, 08:16:04 am »
and the madness depended on what kind of mood he was in (AFAIR)
It did not - the insanity type only ever depended on the dwarf's personality (for as long as personalities existed) and was otherwise random.

Isn't a dwarf being very unhappy or miserable still a factor? I seem to recall those feelings could cause Fell or Macabre moods. Unless you just mean insanity for failure, in which case ignore me.

Dear dorfs of Whippedgood,

I miss you guys. I know I haven't visited you in ages, but I just started a new job. I promise I'll check in to see what stupidity you've gotten yourselves into now really soon.

Signed,

Your overseer
