Other Games / Thorns of War

Hello. I'm not sure why the other thread was locked and I really didn't want to start a new thread, but I felt the need to reply. I'm the person who created that game and this morning someone from here who is playing ToW told me about the other thread so I thought I'd check it out. I'm glad they did because this looks like a great game and I plan to give it a shot myself.

As someone who spends a vast amount of time and work on a game I have to say I am VERY sensitive to the concerns expressed there. I assure you that I never EVER post in the forums of other games unless there is explicit permission to do so (as there does, in fact, seem to be here), and even then I rarely do simply because I'm too busy and I'm a horrendous promoter. I'm not actually sure who started that thread, but it certainly wasn't me.

That said, to those who mentioned it doesn't seem like a role playing game due to the rat catcher at the starting location giving hints on how to play... I have labored over different ways to help new players get started with the basics of how to play and that was one of the solutions, which players who have continued to play have expressed an appreciation for. When I play games I'm a very serious role player. In fact, I only really enjoy MUDs with strict enforced role play and permanent death, such as Armageddon and Harshlands. However, I do not enforce role play and do not have permanent death in ToW simply because it's not that kind of game. It's as much a Sim as it is an RPG.

As for killing 20 rats being boring... one of the rat catcher's functions is to tell you how to use chat to get help. The players in ToW are some of the most helpful you will find anywhere and if you make contact you are unlikely to need to kill any rats at all. The rat catcher provides a basic job and income for new people, but the real game begins when other players take you under their wings and you become a part of the development of villages, fortresses, and resources. The game isn't about grinding through monsters. It's about building, crafting, and politics.

I'm VERY sorry to have started a new thread since I'm new to these forums. I understand this isn't an ideal way to say hello, but the other thread was locked. I feel these forums have invited discussion of other games, and I feel that the content of the other thread invited, if not demanded, some sort of response from me. I'm very sorry if anyone is offended. I do feel I've followed the rules of this forum.

Lastly... to the creators of Dwarf Fortress, from another developer... I'm extremely impressed with what you've done here and wish you the absolute best.
