Ocean nanofort. If you don't get the bug that I did (where the waves don't work properly) then you race against time to dig into the cliff before all of your dorfs drown :)

Water pulses can force creatures through areas where they can't path (again, ref. the wagon). Have 2-3 grates for 100% definite certainty they won't get through.

Err, I'm not 100% sure, but I think that if there's other rooms in your barracks, they might not train because they don't think there's enough room. Also, check your guards for nervous injuries. Nerve injuries stop dorfs sparring.

Yeah, I picked a cave map, with a fairly threatening amount of creatures and a resident, and I've just realized my map has no water. Apart from tweak-ing myself some water, how can I get some?

It is not a bug. It is merely a feature of the game that not all worldgens feature elves, goblins and humans. I've had worlds genned where it was basically a billion elves vs a handful of dwarves, only goblins and dwarves etc.

If you're using a setup where there are lots of civs e.g. Primative Civs (more than the limit on the worldgen you're using) you'll often find that some of the core civs may not be placed on the map.

Savescumming isn't cheating. Cheating, imo, only is applicable in multiplayer games. You're not playing it how the author wanted it to be played but to be fair almost everyone cheats if you count utilities such as reveal and tweak.

I second Jim about his comment above. Everyone should play without savescumming on at least one world, because it's much nicer.

Anyway, I don't think there was much coherent thought in this post I'm writing, I'm just really writing down my point of view as it comes into my head :)

Toady's not making it as a purely business game. It's his vision. That's why he doesn't have a team of 20 developers helping him along and so on.

It's a roguelike, which means no quit-without-saving. You can do it, it's very simple. How does navigating to your save directory and copying and pasting it waste that much time anyway? Unless you lost your fortress to an accident and it auto-overwrote it while you were away from keyboard or something.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes not, apparently. I traded a buch of animals, and I'd notice if 12-20 zome one humped camels got loose behind my defences.

Goblins were never added to your world. Tends to happen. Randomly places some civilisations, sometimes one is left out.

I use a small core of champions cross trained in as many weapons as possible (so I can equip them with whatever the fancy takes me) and a bunch of promising bolt-catching homeland guard to get rid of animals / amuse me in the arena battles
