On a related note, how do I stop towercaps from growing on the water dump spots?

Indeed. Like the Sea of Vomit I noticed in the dwarf heaven world.

Oh. So that's why it doesn't work with magma anymore, either.  :(

Well, I haven't got any diagrams, but what I did was replicate this:

http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-285-waterpressureinriverexperiment

Over a little magma resevoir I dug, filled and sealed off with floodgates.

EDIT: Urgh, possibly I made a mistake. Further testing currently going on.

SECOND EDIT: Yep, mistake. Magma was flowing in diagonally through a gap I missed. Rebuilding...

Third: Darn. It seems it doesn't work with magma.

The magma generator works! 'm now filling in a 20x20 cavern with NO magma input!

Urgh. The output's not fantastic, though.

Anyone done it?

Going to try the magma generator as soon as I have time.

I don't believe it has to be a 1x1 walled in area, though, as I discovered to my chagrin while trying to drain a river. It's just that the area allows it to work faster.

Oooh. Idea; we need to recreate Ankh Morpork in DF!

Begin with a human city with a river running through it, occupy a few *ahem* unoccupied houses and start digging! Bonus points for lots of silt and mud, further bonus for using perpetual power: The Axle.

Darn. Now I have a hankering to find a city...

Blast. I'd just dug out a huge area, too.

Ah, well, thanks.

Um, could someone confirm this for me? Towercaps only grow when you've found an underground river or pool?

Possibly the wrong twin towers.

Possibly the right one, too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do dorfs learn?
« on: May 28, 2009, 02:11:27 am »
NEW STUFFS:
Weird. I noticed my new recruits, marksdwarves, had no ammunition though there was this big stockpile, though admittedly it was hidden off to one side. They had quivers and crossbows, but no ammunition. Then I tried something: I stationed the dwarfs inside the stockpile, and then took them off duty: lo and behold, they grabbed the ammo!

Um. They sure seem to act as if they didn't know about the ammo till I 'showed' it to them...

*mildly creeped out*

OLD:
I decided to close off my hammerer into his own room: But how do I drop food down for him? I understand it can be done by digging a hole in the roof from the next z level up, but how do I actually get the dorfs to drop food down?

Hm. Platinum, obsidian, an uncut ruby and sundry others...

A quern. A platinum encrusted obsidian quern worth 61200 dwarfbucks.

...

If I build a quern with it in a statue garden, will dwarfs admire it?

I believe it's like this: Pumps can be made of any material except wood if the open tile isn't submerged in magma.

Build a room for the nobles. Dig a dungeon under the room, release the skeleton eagles.
Now, when you want to kill a noble, pull the lever, the noble will drop in the dungeon and flee for his life, chased by the skelletal horrors. Never being able to sleep, eat or drink, just fear. When they collapse, the eagles shall feast on their bodies.
Oh, how I love fantasizing about these kind of things :P

*coughs* That sounds surprisingly like what I'm doing.

What I'm doing, see, is to build the tombs of my nobles, 'cept the mayor, because he's not demanding and he's a legendary miner, very, very near their living quarters.

Directly connected to their studies, in the case of my baron and his consort, hidden behind a cabinet.

When I finally get annoyed enough to dispose of them, I'm going to have them interred... And then ressurect them as skeletons with dwarf companion.

The rooms will, of course, be reused by the next baron/baroness.

With their predecessor's skeletal bodies creaking about just behind that cabinet. ;D

The king? His tombs are three z levels below his throne room.

Do we get new kings when unfortunate accidents meet the first one?
