DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: June 05, 2013, 02:55:53 am »
Oh god.... last night.  Built a cat genocide machine (technically just one passage in my fort all spike trapped for keeping the pop down).

Anyway my 4th hammerer arrived and, like before, I activated the main entrance spike traps to take care of him.  Unfortunately I put the wrong lever on repeat - the cat genocide machine.  Since I hadn't actually intended on using it I hadn't locked the doors at either end.

To add insult to injury, I went off to make myself a cuppa while this was happening.  When I got back and discovered what I had done, it was after about 20 dorfs were already in bed due to a rare case of 'basketball sized perforations'.   Dammit...

My fort wealth is in the millions my pop over 100. Everything is there. Just not the FUN.
-EDIT-Seems with (every) consecutive version things keep getting worse these days.

Wow, was it really necessary to be such an ungrateful and whiny little brat?  The only way you might deserve to bitch and moan like that is if you donate a lot of money to the Bay.  Go play a game which you enjoy if you're going to whine about this one advancing.  Releases that aren't bugfixes have huge flaws -- it's always been that way.  So drop back to .18 or .16 or stop whining like a 5 year old about how the thing you get for free and are choosing to play isn't perfect.

Hate to break this to you, but just because a game is free does not make it suddenly exempt from criticism.  Every time someone here jumps to DF's defense with a really stupid argument like yours, God kills a kitten.

Eh don't worry, I'm sure TD will make things right by fixing the trillions of bugs adding some new broken feature in the next release.

Was running a mass dumping of stone to clear out storage space, when I got hit by a lasher ambush squad. Bits of legendary farmers, and assorted useful dwarves everywhere. My two squad military rushed out weaponless to try wrestle the lashers (Hadn't made any armor or weapons yet).

I'm now dealing with a tantrum spiral, as the only 3 surviving military members went insane shortly after this horrific event.

So many babies and adult dwarfs died to a giant slug that the ensuing tantrum spiral took my remaining population down from 110 to 2.

Wanted to move a titan in his cage to a different room and instead let him out of the cage.  All hell did break loose.

Seconding the d/b menu in first few games.  ENTER ENTER ENTER ENTER ENTER ENTER ENTER.

Oh yeah, my first game or two, not knowing about bins.  Stockpiles coming out of my ears.

Or my first encounter with carps.  Couldn't figure out why my dwarfs kept dying, turning all the offshoots of the river red.  Even worse, couldn't figure out why my lemming dwarfs kept pouring out to go to the same place, only to die as well.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's Your Favorite Way to Build Your Fort?
« on: February 28, 2011, 03:34:56 am »
I never go for anything fancy in the first few years.  Get all the essentials up and running with a few extras - basic square rooms, minimum wall building etc etc - very spartan.  Once max pop has been reached and I'm happy then the real fun starts

Well not the best in terms of value but someone in my fort recently craft an image of the god of disease or something with three rotten dwarfs carrying out the ceremony or something.  Pretty sick stuff - think I'll plonk it in my mayors room and give him nightmares.

I caught myself a hydra - going to plonk it at the bottom of some danky pit for goblin/elf fun later on.  I've got it in for the elves in this game - I desperately needed some trade with them in my third year only to trade a barrel by accident.  They will suffer.

The hydra had an awesome fight with a human maceman.  As to be expected the Hydra kicked most of their asses.  Then, the last human, Ile the Mace Man rushed after the hydra to save the last trader.  They battled for quite a few minutes, the human managing to damage every surface appendage into the red as well as internal damage to the yellow.  The mace man eventually tired and the hydra began healing.  Losing his entire left leg he tried to limp away.  This continued for a few more minutes before he was finally struck down.  Ile the Mace man will have songs sung in his name.

I think as a sort of pay-back I'll pump tiny bits of water onto his head just to annoy him.

I will bother with military stuff when the effort required via work-a-rounds and other stuff you need to remember is fixed in a successive version/patch.  Until then the military will be an ad-hoc feature that I use only to take care of the odd berserker.  The lengthily process involved to get this buggy system working stretches the word 'fun' to the point that it becomes quite 'unfun'.

Started in a cold area.  Spent most of the first year burrowing in (but not getting any traps or cages setup) and grabbing some water when the ice melted for a while.  Had just seen the dwarven caravan off when a Sasquatch entered my fort.  At this point I had no military, no traps, no cages and only 18 dwarfs.  I have never encountered one before so I wasn't too sure about the menace level.  After he ripped a poor farmer apart I realised he needed to be contained before I could deal with him properly.  Unfortunately my long tunnel entrance (only thing on the first floor for sealing/safety purposes) which has doors on either end failed me.  One of my other farmers, terrified at the slobbering monstrosity happened to drop a single plump spawn in the door  :'(  By the time my third dwarf dropped he Sasquatch had earned a )(*$#@#$ name for himself.  So I militarize my one miner and give him my war dogs.  He rushes off to..... get some water.

When they do finally meat the cowardly beast actually turns tail and runs.  The miner and his woof are chasing but failing to close the distance... the bastard is going to get away!  Luck strikes when bigfoot tries to exit the door I still had control over.  I quickly lock it and the yeti is too stupid to head for the spawn-blocked door.  My miner damages his hand and bigfoot runs the other way back into my fort.  They clash again halfway down the passage with bigfoot going yellow on everything.  A few seconds later however and all his wounds have disappeared and gone white again  :o :o

Between the dog nipping at his heels and my miner giving it all hes got it is only enough to keep bigfoot busy but not dead.  So I add 9 more to the squad and they all pile into the fight amidst a thick cloud of miasma.  I imagine it must have been a horrible site from the outside - just the sweaty grunts of stunties bashing away at something that just wont friggin die.  It takes a few minutes of constant bashing for the thing to peg.  All in all, 2 farmers, 2 war dogs and one peasant dead.  Turns out the war dogs did die but the remaining untrained dogs decided to join in.  Only injury sustained amongst the survivors was a single red thumb (the first miner to fight).

DF Gameplay Questions / Setting the resolution
« on: January 28, 2011, 01:42:11 pm »
I am using May Greens tileset (as I always have).  It has been quite a while since I last played and I am having great difficulty editing the init file to get a resolution that works.  I have an old 17" CRT monitor if that helps.

DF Community Games & Stories / Lina Ewe - Land of Enchantments
« on: November 24, 2009, 01:44:02 pm »
I felt like writing a DF story so here it is.

http://passthisover.blogspot.com/2009/11/dwarf-fortress-lets-play.html

I've parked it on Googles blogspot to save a little stress on the Bay12 forums.  When I do update it I'll let everyone know.

Any feedback/general comments would be appreciated, even if their just to say whether you're enjoying it or not.

Thanks,
Cheers!
