DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Not Exactly a Loveletter to Fans

I can deal with certain bugs, and now I've gotten used to the military interface, I can see it's a huge improvement, but every single one of my DF2010 fortresses so far have died because of indestructible forgotten beasts.
It was funny the first couple of times, but now seeing an otherwise perfectly functioning fortress fall foul of a de-limbed vomit/gem/metal monster that bumps everyone to death is getting a little tiring. And unfortunately, magma is so hard to utilise effectively now, these monsters usually appear before I've managed to implement it.
That's the only thing that's putting a downer on my experience, but it isn't stopping me playing :)

Graphics problems here too; did what it said on your site Mike, about copying the raw folder and pasting it into the region folders. I take it you meant the 31.03 raw folder should replace the old 31.02 one in the region folders? The site's a little unclear, saying to replace df_31_** with df_31_**.
I've ended up with some weird allocations:

Starting a new game results in the right graphics, so there must be something I got wrong in the raw transfer, although I'm baffled as to how a simple copy & paste could have gone wrong.
Interestingly, it won't let me change the graphics set for these old saves either. I tried switching to Beefmo's dwarves, but ended up with the same result, even after changing the graphics_mayday.txt in both the base raw folder and the region raw folder.

Comparing the graphics_mayday.txt files from both a new game's raw folder and an old game's reveals no differences.

Once you get to the magma sea it's like the biggest game of minesweeper you've ever played. Except there's nothing telling you how close you are to going boom.

Okay, my chagrin has shifted from the military system, which I'm now pretty sure I understand, to indestructible forgotten beasts. Just saved a second game and exited in frustration, as a titan made of spessartine refused to die, even with its arms and mandibles chopped of. Much like the vomit monster that was the downfall of my last fortress, when I finally threw the towel in this beast was little more than a head, a body and 2 footless legs, and yet it was STILL managing to kill dwarves. In fact, that's the only time it was able to land a blow, as the dwarves got so tired after a while, the titan was bound to land some hits.
I hadn't had a chance the finish my magma pump from the magma sea, so killing it with fire wasn't an option. Pumping magma 60 z-levels is not trivial.

Do pumps still desalinate water?

My mayor broke a leg in a cave in, and spent a few months in hospital. The chief medical officer even placed him in traction (although he didn't move him from his bed to the traction bench; I think it's  functional with no "animation" so to speak of yet).
He subsequently got up of his own accord to feed himself, even though he still has a red, broken leg. He's now going about his business of making mechanisms and managing work orders, so I'm assuming that his leg's in plaster.

The Vomit monster I mentioned in another thread that eventually caused the downfall of my last fortress "Wallmurdered" (I really should have seen that coming, shouldn't I?), had a combat log that reached 177 pages at one point. Early on, when it was injecting hapless dorfs with "Forgotten Beast Extract", the logs were pure awesome, but once everything that could be chopped off had been chopped off, it just degraded into various dwarves smashing bits and the vomit monster bumping them to death. He offed an entire squad of legendaries by bumping them. Then he went upstairs to the depot where the dwarven caravan was waiting, and proceeded to bump them to death.
Positively spritely for a quadruped that had all of its feet chopped off.

I got them to attack the megabeast using the Defend Burrow alert.
Unfortunately, the beast was... well, made of vomit and seemingly indestructible.
My dwarves lopped off all its feet and its stinger, and "broke" every remaining body part, but were unable to finally kill it. It eventually bumped an entire squad of legendaries to death.

Bastard.

Oh yeah, before the stinger got lopped off, it injected a couple of poor dorfs with forgotten beast extract.
Eeeew.

I've somehow ended up with cat pus everywhere.

Right, I think I've figured out what's going wrong here. I've save-scummed twice just before a forgotten beast spawns. Before it spawns, my military will happily follow any and all kill orders, but when a forgotten beast appears and I set my squad to attack it, they instead completely ignore the kill order.
I'm going to see if they'll at least follow a move order.

Oh, believe me, I tried that, even going so far as to decommission the squad and recommission it, and they STILL didn't move.
I've had enough for today.

FFS, just when I think I have it all working, my main squad stop responding to kill orders when nothing has changed between now and the last time I issued one. They don't respond to move orders either, just standing there in the barracks doing sweet FA while an Ocean Titan rampages through my fortress.
It would be a good system if it behaved somewhat predictably  >:(

I've had a couple attack my fortress so far:

Zemri Surkul
A great feathered dimetrodon. It has a long, spiral horn and it squirms and fidgets. Beware its deadly spittle!

He killed a dog, then started a fight with one of my cougars. He dodged into my waste disposal chute, over 100z levels deep, partially filled with magma. His horn was the first to burn away. The rest of him followed in short order.

Radir Necarothri Sotasiga
A great scaly snail. It has thin wings of stretched skin and it has a gaunt appearance. Its dark olive scales are round and set far apart. Beware its poisonous vapors!

He got into my food storage, killed a wardog, farted at a soldier, then had his body chopped of. I don't know how you chop somebody's body off, but I'm guessing in a snail's case, it meant the shell housing its body.

I think you have to set different equipment loadout per alert level; so for your Inactive/Training, you'd equip them with practise weapons and armour, but for your first alert level, you'd give the proper stuff. Then you'd just change the squad's status using "t" on the "s"quad menu.

Gah, I had point-&-click kill working for ages, then it just sort of stopped working. Let alone which, my medical dwarves are completely ignoring the hospital and injured dwarves, even though I've given them all of the healthcare jobs.
I don't mind losing, but when a well established fort with some legendary soldiers begins to fall to five cave swallowmen because a couple of crucial game systems have failed, well, it gets on my nerves a tad.
