DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: March 19, 2012, 12:03:12 pm »
I had a minotaur arrive during a siege recently that got pissed off and attacked the goblins. I dispatched it pretty quickly (sieges have become testing grounds for the dwarf-sized flechettes that are my military now), and thought nothing more of it. That is until I found an *engraving* of said minotaur killing a goblin during the siege with a silk clothing item. Pretty sure it was a sock, but I'll have to confirm.

I'm pretty sure I've had an artifact adamantine mug before. Oh Joy :|

Did I read somewhere that they don't gain attributes too? You know, like "He is basically unbreakable". That would put the kibosh on even danger room trained military vampires.

Was that the skinless bunny demon dude that someone did a cartoon of?
The one "He's a bit short though, isn't he?"
That bunny demon was cool.

I'm wondering about one particular form of detection.
I once had a vampire in the military that I stationed in a well which I subsequently sealed off. Granted, he'd already gained some swimmer levels by falling in a river while fighting gobboes, but in theory, would it be possible to draft all immigrants and set a station for them underwater, whereupon only the vampires would actually submerge?

They do in 34.02 as well. I've killed loads of human diplomats and now have the pleasure of occasional human sieges.

Tangent time!
I once burned a caravan where a trader slipped through the not-quite-closed trade depot floodgate with his head on fire. He set fire to the whole world then had the good sense to dive into a nearby pond, which he sat on the bottom of for the next year or so. He had no head fat left after that little incident.
He didn't seem to mind though, just sat there in his pond watching the world go by.
I eventually got bored of him and set my military on him.
Shame that. I kinda miss him now.

Oh yeah, and don't send your military to attack dwarven caravans parked on the map edge waiting for a depot to be constructed. After killing the merchants, your dwarves will turn upon each other. I think there must be something screwy with the faction system there.

I love my current nobles; I have a Queen who likes axes, a Duchess who likes millstones and a mayor who likes ballista parts.
And even better, I've realised that now I have royalty, if the dwarves decide to elect another, more awkward mayor, I simply replace him with MY choice. Cue Ballista Part Bob, custom profession name "Mayor".
Before the current mayor, one numpty demanded an Elk Bird Horn Door in his dining room. Idiot.
My Queen's biggest demand, which was easily met, was a lay pewter chest in her throne room.

Currently, I have a 30 strong military, all armed with rather nice steel axes.
Armok bless the Queen.

How do I pronounce Urist?
Usually "Dumbass".

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Floorplan for...
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:54:25 am »
I always set communal dining room tables and chairs out in cross formation with a central statue (preferably masterwork).
Code: [Select]
..h..
..T..
hTSTh
..T..
..h..

There's always 1 floor tile between cross formations.
It's just force of habit I suppose.

I usually leave engraving of the main dining room until I have at least a couple of legendary engravers.

I had one that caused a brief fever then exploding eyeballs. I started using decontamination baths after that.

"Boltssaved: where every severed limb is another bolt saved".

I'm still slightly bemused and somewhat horrified that my most successful 40d fortress actively included a baby drowning device.
And yes, the urge to send out the demolition team during a siege is almost overwhelming.

Fortunately in my current fortress, I seem to have hit the number-of-children cap, with new dwarves only being born when another dwarf dies.

I still butcher any and all newborn kittens mind you.

Also, try and catch it so you can make an ass demon silk farm, and make ass silk cloaks, ass silk robes, ass silk socks... and laugh at your dwarves's expense.

It may be juvenile, but I got such a laugh out of this :D

I swear I've had miners kill each other while channeling just a single level. I'll have to double check.

You only risk cave-ins if there are existing tunnels or rooms already in the layer you're channeling into..
