You blink in confusion as the black bag is pulled off your head, darkness replaced with blinding light. Your eyes start to adjust but before you can get a good look around someone shoves you down into a chair. A metal table screeches across the stone floor and grinds to a stop in front of you. The room's only light shines harshly down from above and you see shadowy figures shifting around you. One moves forward and, one by one, slaps three pieces of paper down on the table.  Each one is an image of a Tunnel Bore along with specifications and explanations written in small text next to them.

A hand grabs the back of your head and and pushes your face closer to the table; your bound hands bite painfully into your back.

"The situation here is very simple." A voice -gruff and arrogant- says from somewhere in front of you, "We have a job we need you to do.  Do it well and we let you go. Fail it and we'll feed you to the wool maggots. Understand?"

To punctuate the point the man behind you slams your head into the table before jerking it back up to look at the three different Bores.

"Now, choose which one of these fine chariots you want to ride off on."

Industrial Bore
Power: 12
Mobility: 10
System: 8
Integrity: 8
Penetration: 12
8 Open rooms.
A decommissioned industrial bore used for digging Tunnel Paths. Has a strong boiler and powerful drill but its frame and plating isn’t designed to withstand much abuse.

Military Bore
Power: 8
Mobility: 12
System: 12
Integrity: 12
Penetration: 6
3 open rooms
4 cannons (cannon 5, pierce 5)
Surplus Military Bore leftover from an unsuccessful attempt to slay a Great Worm.  A mobile weapons platform with thick armor, advanced automated systems and a precision mobility system.  Smaller than most other bores and as a result lacks a powerful boiler and drill.

Nomad Bore
Power: 8
Mobility: 14
System: 6
Integrity: 10
Penetration: 12
15 Open Rooms
An oversized and outdated Bore formerly used by trading caravans. Its systems are outdated and its boiler isn’t the best, but its powerful drill and expertly tuned mobility systems allow it to get just about anywhere.

Roll To Dodge / A Poll about Mechs.
« on: June 03, 2018, 07:32:23 pm »
This is a poll about mechs/Mecha.  For reasons. Feel free to expound upon answers.

1.When it comes to mechs, what kind of tone do you like?

A. Something that tries to takes the mechs as realistically as they can. Like Voltoms, Blue Gender, or 8th MS Team.  Mechs are usually treated like tanks or similar weapons.

B. Something that doesn't take things very seriously or realistically, but still has limitations and internal consistencies. Along the lines of Armored Core, some gundam, etc. They are generally treated like high tech fighters with a lot of maneuverability and destructive ability but not able to just make shit up as they go.

C. The "Standard" mech level in which no attention is really paid to mechanics or how anything works, the mechs are just cool things that fight other mechs or giant monsters.  Like Pacific rim, Eureka seven, Macross.

D. The "Fuck it" level. The level where anything can happen because its cool or weird or whatever. Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, Gunbuster, G Gundam, etc. Mechs are god machines that can do anything if their pilots have enough determination/ believe in the heart of the cards or whatever.

2. Is the division between Mech and Pilot important to you in a game?  As in a mechanical division where the stats of one are not the stats of another?

A. Yes, I want both mech and pilot to be distinct entities with different capacities. Just because a guy pilots a big muscle mech doesn't mean he has to be muscley. Plus it gives room for adventures outside the cockpit.

B. Nah. Pilots and mechs should basically be the same thing. Why would I want to run around as a person when I could instead be fighting in a mech? Also, keeps players and mechs in theme with each other.

3. What Size of mech do you like?

A. Small. Like 5-10 meters or so tall. Effectively a cockpit with arms and legs.
B.  Medium. 20 meters. Metal gear rex and The Iron Giant. Several stories tall.
C. Big. 30-50 meters. Big O, Megas XLR
D. Really big. 70-100 meters. Gypsy Danger, Eva.
E. Fuck off Huge. FLCL Hand Robot,  Fortress Maximus.

4.What sort of Tech/Time period do you like it to be in?

A. Anachronistic. 80's. Cathode tubes, blinky buttons, industrial grunge spaceships, and so on.
B. Modern. Self explanatory.
C. Near Future. Maybe 10-50 years in the future. Still similar to modern but with some changes and advancements.
D. Far future. Effectively unrecognizable and potentially weird.

5. What do you want to fight?

A. Other mechs and people. Human wars.
B. Aliens or some sort of external force.
C. Giant monsters of various origins.
D. Threat of the week: Just about anything from giant space monsters to human doomsday weapons.

Optional: What things are important to you in a mech setting/mech game? What do you want to see and be able to do?

Roll To Dodge / Lands of Blood and Fortune: A test
« on: April 26, 2018, 09:10:38 pm »
Testing a system for hexcrawl exploration.

Here are the rules

I want between 3-6 players.

This will probably be very minimal and casual since its just a test game. If you have questions or suggestions, let me know; the google doc is also open to comment so go ahead and leave one or 50.

20
Hello, I would like some feedback on what system I should make and publish next. I'd also like a nice public platform here for people to scream at me about getting it done because I have a bad habit of getting 70% done and then moving on to another project.

Maze
A game about being a lab rat, inspired by things like the Secret of NIMH and The mouse utopia experiments. Play as mice and rats trapped in bizarre and incomprehensible situations! Try to survive each test! Gain powers or detrimental mutations via the capricious hand of the unknowable beings called "Scientists" and live on through your offspring. Maybe even escape someday. Maybe.

[Unnamed Racing game]

Inspired in equal parts by Fury Road and Red Line, a game about over the top battle racing. Broken into two distinct parts: the build up to the race and the race itself.

Revolver: Blood and Neon
This ruleset exists already and can be found here
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1D5XCel0CXE_0INdY3rW4NHK8Q07e-hXWU6avkO9zF88/edit?usp=sharing
Basically, it just needs to be overhauled so someone other than me can run it. Maps, enemy examples, various things.

Ouroboropolis
A second shot at turning this setting into a playable game. This time without lego limb feature creep! IF you don't know what Ouro is, look up "Tokyo Souls" and thats kind of a loose approximation.

The Glowing King
Wild West pulp post nuclear setting (think New Vegas) crossed with Afro Samurai style quest to reach the Throne and become the glowing king. Some setting stuff done already, many years ago. Before Nuclear throne came out, I'll have you know.

Poison
A game about doing drugs to gain superpowers and visit other worlds. The drugs let you survive the things you've gotten into, but they're also slowly killing you. Find a way out. Think Yume Nikki but with more mutation and chance of horrible death.

Bathysphere

Deep sea exploration and salvage! Steal treasures from the deep, keep your salvage company from going bankrupt, don't get consumed by the horrors below.

Battle Royale
More a challenge to myself than anything. Figure out a way to translate that increasingly popular trope of the large scale island battle royale into a playable game without it being terrible or clunky or slow.

Colossal
The elder gods have come to earth. Go stab them in the eye.  Built around my attempts to turn the Shadow of the Colossus style tiny fighter vs various levels of giant enemy into a workable game.

Mainspring

The world has been overrun by a fleshhorror known as the Wyrm. It has transformed the land to flesh and spawns monsters of horrible proportion and form. Mankind makes their living in floating cities, manipulating flesh and hunting the monsters for the rare and strange materials in them.

Heavy
A game about piloting mechs with mechanical focus on making the mechs feel like something you're piloting rather than just another character you play as. Ever seen  Armored Trooper VOTOMS?

WWII in Space
The Last Jedi started with bombers dropping bombs in space. And at that point I said fuck it; I want to see them go whole hog. Rocket powered b-29 bombers with FTL drives doing bombing runs on space harbors and their space aircraft carriers. Laser Machine guns. Space Nazis. Fuck it.

CULT

A game about trying to obtain otherworldly knowledge and bring your particular god into the waking world while also not being arrested, shot, driven mad, or generally harassed by all the annoying normies who don't want their faces eaten by elder things. Makes use of major arcana and unconventional mechanics.

Tactical Breach Wizards
Its this: www.pentadact.com/2018-02-02-pitch-tactical-breach-wizards/ but as a table top game. I put this here to mess with Sy.

I'll update this with more as I think of more.  Ask questions or generally scream at me below

The Masked League Of Lucha Liberty
Luchadors, the masked exemplars of Strength, Justice, Honor, and Punching. From their fist shaped space station, The Hand of Fate, they watch over the world, ready to spring into action and fight against the forces of darkness wherever they appear. And all of it is captured by the ubiquitous LuchaTV cameras and broadcast to the hungry eyes of the world.  Now you, some ordinary shlub from somewhere, have gotten your hands on a Luchador Mask. Roll To Dodge / Demon Summoning Test (round 2)
« on: January 13, 2018, 02:30:20 am »

Hello. I created a system that lets me turn your doodles into demons. And you can fight with those demons, pokemon style. I just wanna test it out. I need 2 or 4 people to do this. 8 at most. We're gonna hold a little tournament.

First thing's first though, you have to draw your demon summoning Sigil in this circle
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Thats all you have to do for now. However here are a few tips

1. Clear, reasonably thick, lines are much better than some scribbled ms paint pencil tool mess.  If I can't "Read" a sigil, chances are that its not gonna turn out too well.

2. You only get one demon for the test.

3. The sigil has to be DRAWN, a line drawing specifically. You can't put a freaking picture of your cat in there and call it done.

First come first served, and by that I mean first 8 (at most) people to post their drawn sigils will get in.

Roll To Dodge / Mad Max With Wizards: I need opinions
« on: July 11, 2017, 10:58:11 am »
So I once talked about a game, years ago, that I described as "Mad Max with Wizards".  Cabal was a sort of attempt at making it, but it ended up going another direction and becoming something pretty different. Now, I don't dislike Cabal and there are people who do like the game, but I'm still chasing that MMWW phantom.  However, at this point I have two very different ideas as to how I should handle it. I'm gonna lay them out here and you guys can tell me how you think I should proceed. I'm fine with either.

Now, when I thought of MMWW I was talking more about the idea of a  society destroyed by the loss of a particular resource. Magic in my case, gasoline in mad max. That was basically the extent of it. However, some people wanted or expected a much more literal interpretation. Giant deserts, cars, leather, radiation and, for good measure, magic. A game where wizards fought atop souped-up dune buggies. I thought about this a bit and fussed around with the logistics of handling car chase fighting in a meaningful but not overly complex "miniatures war game" kind of way. I think I've found a good middle ground. Mixed fights of on the ground and in cars might be difficult...but they'll just require some fiddling.  The gameplay would probably consist mostly of fights; since mad max isn't known for long contemplative sections. I'd let players create their groups and then do what they want, trying to conquer areas. A lot of it would probably be PC vs NPC at first, but as their territories grew, PVP clashes would be more common.

The other option, closer to my original idea, was basically "Wizard Gang wars", where players choose one of the two gangs and effectively take part in PVP matches across different maps. Each map is an area in the city, and fights have different objectives. Think of them like ER missions but with two player groups each trying to succeed and prevent the other group from doing so. Each success would mark that territory as belonging to that gang and grant them access to what can be found in that area.  And of course, there would be missions to defend conquered areas. The major difference between the fights here and a standard team-based FPS would be that the area would be "Alive". There would still be NPCs around to fight back, call the cops, and even side with you, depending on various factors.

The other question is one of the kinds of magic system to employ. The standard idea would just be Perplexicon style. Albeit a bit tweaked: Don't hide the word meaning and make it so that certain words cost more mana. Though, in this case things remain a lot more subjective for me to balance or decide. And we have the problem of every fight essentially being a quick draw vs dodge contest to some degree.  I have other ideas, however these other ideas would mean losing the modularity of the perplexicon system. The upside would be a system that allowed more objectivity and more depth in terms of how combat works. The big problem with trying to pen in perlexicon with hard rules is that its freedom makes something like an HP system or set effects of modifiers basically impossible.

Opinions?

Roll To Dodge / I need some feedback.
« on: June 11, 2017, 10:42:28 am »
I have two things I'm deciding between. A few people have voted on them but I'm looking for a larger sample size.

1. A game called "Deep Carbon". Scientific drilling has uncovered, miles deep within the earth, a honeycomb of caves, rivers subterranean seas and unseen life forms. The nature and scope of this discovery has been kept secret and governmental powers are eagerly exploring the substrata, looking for anything they can use. Originally scientists and "real" explorers were used but the lower worlds proved too dangerous, so now all manner of prisoner, mercenary, loner and men who will not be missed are used. The players are stationed on a drilling ship and inserted deep into the earth to explore. Sometimes they will have specific objectives, sometimes they will just be tasked with figuring out what this place is. This game has a more ER style feel to it but set in the modern world and with the caveat that humans shall remain decidedly human (unless external fuckery occurs). There are no magics or shit available to humans, though they might find magical things to use or get some of that reality cancer.  Its got a more expeditionary feel to it, being shoved in and then exploring before getting out.

2.A game called "The Bowels of God": Earth has been eaten. Or perhaps it is still being eaten. No one knows. But you're inside it; trying to make a living in a world of flesh. Explore the labyrinthine guts, meet other races that have had their planets destroyed, interact with the parasites and generated species within the belly of god, and try to make sense of this new and hostile world. Has anyone seen episode 4 of the samurai jack season 5? Yeah, kind of like that. This game is much more "tribal". More crafting using organic shit, more monster hunter style better gear via monster parts, and more "go here and do this because our children are dying of the flesh rot" rather than "Go here and do this because the secretive government leaders want to speak the language of techtonic plates and control earthquakes."

Those are the two choices. Which seems more interesting to you? Feel free to ask questions.

UNNATURAL SELECTION

Congratulations [INSERT INMATE NUMBER HERE], you have been selected to take part in a BioGenesis combat test! This is an exciting opportunity to test out some of BioGenesis' new, cutting edge genetic modification systems, relieve the stress created by your incarceration, and even gain an all inclusive pardon!  The rules for this test are extremely simple:

1. You will be provided with a BioGenesis personal  Gene Modifier. Each Gene modifier is programmed to allow its user to alter their genome up to 10 full times. These alterations can be minor or all encompassing; change one gene or change them all! The only limit is that you may only do it 10 times before the Gene Modifier requires a recharge.

2. Your gene modifier will be fully recharged whenever you kill another participant of the test.

3. The Combat arena will change every time a member of the test is killed. A new participant will be introduced during this change.

4. If a participant ever manages to kill 10 other participants, they will be considered a winner and removed from the test. The test will continue without them.

BioGenesis thanks you for your mandatory participation in this test.

Roll To Dodge / 888th Brigade: DAY OF THE PURGE
« on: May 13, 2017, 07:26:21 pm »
888th Brigade

Greetings. My name is Brigadier General Franklin S. Bone. And from now till this war is won, or they return our remains to our respective mothers, you belong to me. This is the 888th Brigade; we handle the jobs that no one else can. Or more often, the jobs no one else wants. We don't follow the standard chain of command, we don't follow the standard brigade setup, and we don't follow someone else into battle. We are the first boots on the beach, the first men through the breach, and the only mad sons of bitches ready, willing, and able to go anywhere and do anything at a moment's notice.  Some of you here are blind patriots with a hatred for Hitler and the Nazis that borders on the fetishistic. Some of you are specialists, plying your considerable skills. Some of you are madmen, idiots, or trouble makers that pissed off some commander and got dumped here to die. And die many of you will.

I will not lie to you: there is no fame nor glory here. Our actions are secret, by and large, the sort of thing no one will ever know of. And I won't try to con you into the vain hope of trading your life for some tin medal. I offer you only this: Without men like you, we will lose this war and the world will be plunged into chaos. Carry that in your hearts and walk forward into hell with no regrets!

And leave your dogtags at the door.  If I can't identify your body, I don't care. And if I CAN, then you better still be shooting at some Krauts. The only way out of my brigade is when they ship you home in a shoe box!

DISMISSED!
