DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Wrestling problems

I'm wandering through adventure mode and trying to figure everything out. I seem to have one problem though, involving the wrestling mechanic. I can catch hold of the things and I can strangle, but I can't seem to do locks or anything that would allow the more advanced techniques. It seems all I can do is release. Is there something I'm overlooking? Does it have to be done with only the lower arms? Or do I have to be to a certain level to do it?

Perhaps its the enemies I'm doing it on? I'm trying things out on wolves.

edit: I figured out how to do the gouging of eyes (need a free hand) but I still have yet to be able to perform locks. Do they only work on humanoids?

OK so I have this one miner, legendary miner, unbelieveably tough, extremely agile, the whole nine yards. So he's walking out to get a drink from the river when he suddenly just freezes and stands there, slowly becoming hungry and thirsty until he's finally near death. Well, just before dying he decides to snap out of it and get back to eating and so on.

Now this has happened a few times,with  random people. I had an engraver just wander out into the woods and stand around till he died of thirst. Is this just a glitch? Or maybe some weird job path error? I'd like not to have my legendary workmen dying of hunger because they were to mindnumbingly stupid to eat the food right beside them

DF Gameplay Questions / Well digging problems

So, I have all the equipment needed to make a well. I have the water and a channel to direct it into a holding tank. However, when I try to create the well is says I need open space. I've tried widening the area to 3x3, tried placing it in different elements and all that jazz and yet nothing works. What exactly does it mean when it says its needs open space?
