A partial success at casting fireball should result in at least some sort of fire.  And that's if you don't consider the fact that he's a intelligent librarian. If you include those, he should have had no problem following the book's instruction.

Super noogie!

You can also give them the [EMBED] tag to tear them off. Brainless creatures don't die immediately, but fall unconscious and suffocate quickly.

At that size, it shouldn't be taking any damage at all, and should oneshot your dwarves no matter what.

You might have overdone it and its damage/block went into the negatives.

That or your data/objects needs to be cleared.

Grabbing two wolves in the face, and then latching onto a third one while it struggles!

[1] you decide to hit Steadman in anger instead, it goes against all you want but you cant stop. [6] you slap him across the face [5] the force of the blow whips him around and brings tears to both of your eyes, [2] he starts bleeding a little. Your hand hurts like hell you must of sprained it.

Fenneth Cast Heal minor wounds on Steadman [2] but it does nothing.

The way this was worded and Jetsquirrel's personality aren't really matching up. I don't think a calm character should ever just become "angry" simply because he rolled a one.

If it was something like:

You try to avoid attention and take whatever can from the chest. [1] Before you were able to get a good look at the insides of the box, Steadman kicked the box into you. [2] You fall and sprain your wrist.

You could have used Flintus' partial success at the fireball, since he is insensitive, to do the damage to Steadman.

DF Suggestions / Re: Engravings: No Repeats In One Room

I think those would probably be a pain to code (seeing as you'd have to apply a value to every event in legends/ones at the site or make code to check every surrounding engraving).

I think an easier alternative would just be more specific descriptions. For example, currently, the norm for any non-fatal battle would be "X is standing over Y. Y is crying" or something to that effect. It could be "X is standing over Y. X is holding the severed <body part> of Y", because legends records those. Then, all we'd need to do is lower the prominence of ascensions (or make several variants of descriptions for it, like speaking, cheering, saluting, etc.) and we'd have a very healthy variety of engravings.

To be fair, the trolls won't be able to see either.

Now if they had [EXTRAVISION]...

It seems that the engravings available to a fortress has to do with its site. Probably what's been recorded for that place in legends.

If you embark on a orc/goblin/whatever town, then engrave, you'll get a ton of "Orc striking down dwarf", "Orc shooting dwarf", "Orcs are travelling", and whatnot.

On the other hand, if you embark in the middle of nowhere, the only piece of history at the beginning would be the founding and ascension of the leader.

At least, that's what I've observed.

OK A. If anyone hits me again, I'm gonna shoot em, so top using me as practice.
     B. I'll follow Trilby, since he's the only one you haven't made violent towards me.
C.Seriously Diakron, stop improvising peoples turns, I said push the chest, not kick it with super-powered strength, and if you are gonna keep making me kick stuff, I should at least gain kicking exp.

Technically, you are violent and "twitch". I'd say removing it violently made sense.

I go into the trapdoor before CJ. If there are enemies, I trance and attack (Seeing as how I'd be outnumbered). Maybe I get some kind of bonus on attacks while tranced? (Assuming I succeed a trance roll or something)

It's just plain hard to get metals from a caravan.

You could lock the doors to the prison area.

It'll actually result in nothing at about 35% of the time (.9 ^ 10 = .349)

I'd boost each thing up to 20% instead of 10%. That way, the chance of getting two items is still low at 4%, but the chance of getting nothing is lowered to 10%

Life Advice / Re: The meaning of suicide...
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:55:58 am »
I just (hopefully) came out a low point in my life recently, so the memories are still fresh.

In my case, it was several things that added to one depressing outlook. Interestingly enough, most of those were lies made up by my own mind during the time. It just had a way of repeating the lies until they felt true.

I felt as though I wasn't needed, so my death wouldn't have a large impact on those I love. Also, I felt that my future wasn't worth waiting for (school, school, school, job, job, job, death). Finally, the general environment at the time was just unhappy.

Now, with a happier perspective, I could tell the first two were kind of imaginary. My mind had managed to stretch small things (i.e. financial stability) to huge issues (i.e. they don't need you). The first two were basically results of that.

I'm not a professional, so take my advice with a grain of salt:

What really brought my out of my depression (I don't want to say depression, because I don't have it) was finding out that my self-told lies were really lies. I'd say clearing up any misunderstandings by the suicidal person can really help if they harbor misunderstandings.

Of course, getting a professional is definitely a good idea.

Funny how easy it is to talk about these things on the internet.
