DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I attack the elven trade caravan?
« on: December 12, 2009, 06:42:32 pm »
You have to kill their liaison, who only shows up once your population is high enough.

Any info on how high this population requirement is (and if/how it can be changed)? The fact that I only remember having seen an elven liaison once or twice leads me to believe that it must be either pretty high, or not the only requirement.

I've read accounts here from people unable to build magma-powered buildings even with magma present, so this seems to be prone to glitches.

As to neither seeing magma nor getting a report of its discovery, and still being able to build magma structures, I vouch for this being possible, as the above poster asserted.

I also think you can't use magma forges and such if you don't discover it.

Not necessarily. In my latest fort I haven't had my magma discovery event either, and yet I see magma-related buildings under .

It fell to the ground as logic would dictate

It might have been logical, but you have to admit that it was something that positively had to be tested. The logical outcome isn't always the obvious one in DF.

How's THAT for a mental image?

What's more interesting is whether that cadaver will stay there forever, being sort of glitched, or if can be taken down by getting rid of the tree.

If it's the former case, then I guess one could build a ramp a stairs next to the tree to get that thing down.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: drink quality
« on: December 11, 2009, 09:30:02 am »
(strawberries, prickle berries, longland grass, rat weed, and the elusive sun berry) almost every dwarf has "had a truly decadent drink lately".

Keep in mind that wine from the berries I have underlined has a higher quality modifier than others (it's 5, compared to 2 for something like plump helmet wine). That leads me to believe that a dwarf might appreciate it as "truly decadent" regardless of any other putative factors, such as variety, preference or brewer skill.

Right, the test you've proposed makes sense. I can't tell you if I'm going to test that out soon though, as I'm currently tinkering with my game in ways that lead to regens left and right.

This requires some dwarven Mythbusting.

Off the top of my head, I don't know how you'd even verify there wasn't a hidden quality modifier involved in drinks. I mean, even your dabbling brewer might crank out a masterwork or exceptional barrel of wine (assuming I correctly remember how skills vs quality work) if he gets lucky, skewing your whole study in the process.

It may be that they've drank something for which they have a preference, or just generally like to drink in the same way they generally like to sleep in beds.

The part about preferences in your post makes sense (intuitively, as I have no idea about the game mechanics), the part about beds and stuff not so much. By that logic, they'd have to be getting thoughts about sleeping in legendary beds all the time, which I can't remember ever seeing.

I'm pretty sure I see my dwarves get thoughts from "legendary" drinks all the time, so I second Skorpion's assertion of there being a hidden quality level. What else could it be? The last time I saw a mention of legendary drinks in my fort, I had no sunberries, or whatever those were called (I'm talking about the fruit that lets you produce wine of quality 5, whereas most other drinks are a 2 or 3). Or do personal preferences affect this? I.e. a dwarf who likes dwarven wine will rate it "legendary", whereas another might call it "fine".

qoonpooka:
Training up a grower to legendary certainly doesn't take forever. My sole grower, who did little other work, hit legendary in what seemed like 1.5 or 2 years. Sure, a bookkeeper might hit legendary faster, but 2 years for a grower is nothing to complain about.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What to do with gold?
« on: December 10, 2009, 12:35:25 pm »
Gold is no more a non-renewable resource than microcline

That's missing the point. Not only is microcline uninteresting, it's also abundant. Gold is nothing of the sort.

Yes, that is what I meant. She's middle-aged, not old, at least not in my books.

GCS are tamable once you get the DM. Before that, they just look at your dwarves like chicken nuggets.

That's probably common knowledge, but in case you wanted to cut the DM out of the loop, you can replace their PET_EXOTIC tag with the PET one.

Also, I hope everyone who wants to tame GCS and still use their silk is aware of the fact that you will need to aggravate them by showing them goblins or something. Otherwise, they won't produce silk.

And I disagree with you: Old lady tits are very menacing.

And I disagree with you as well: Madonna is not old.
