DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Need some megaproject help.

Okay, found a site. Terrifying biome, large Obsidian layers, HFS (magma means burny clowns), pit, underground river, 78 z-levels.

Nope. Magma does not imply Spirits of Fun.

It's not wrong. Dwarves simply always will to fire. They just like the sound.

TWANG CRUNCH 'Oh no, th' magma!' CRUNCH FWOOM 'OH NO TH' BOOZ'!'

30 seconds later...

My name is Catten Montoya. You spoiled my drink break. Prepare to die.

I don't do treecutting. If I do, it's to clear land, not to create wood. If you're good with barrels and bins, you simply don't need that much wood, and with none in your stockpiles and maximum requests, you can get tonnes of it from caravans.

Treecutting is very  much an optional part of DF.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Safe fishing with an underground river?
« on: December 26, 2009, 03:05:47 am »
Fishing will only ever turn up turtles, unless there's  a brook, river, underground river or underground pool in the same area tile as the place the dwarf is fishing. Turtles will show up in ANY water, even water completely disconnected from any other water.

HFS is a feature rather than a vein/cluster- it gets generates at worldgen.
Of course, when all else fails, look for a desert with a magma pipe.  Unlikely though a find like that is, pretty much every white or black sand desert consists of chalk below the sand (meaning lots of magnetite and platinum to go with your huge layers of flux).

I'm sorry, but that's simply not true. Whilst is is often easier to find a fluxpipe in deserts, that's mostly because the different coloured sands all have different rocks under them, so a sedimentary-igneous extrusive boundary (and thus a fluxpipe map) is more common. The type of soil in a biome has *no* effect on the rock.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Would it be possible, that modding all the useless big-cluster stones like orthoclase or microcline to be small cluster, made the other big clusters (magnetite, bauxite) way more frequent? I have that nagging feeling, there's something wrong since I made these changes to the raws...

I've done that, only to a further degree. I have no large clusters; magnetite is a vein, everything else a small cluster. The problem with retaining one or two large clusters is that you get an ungodly large unbalanced amount of it. My way basically eliminates platinum from the game, but that's all that's wrong with it.

I think, out of the various fluxes, Chalk is best. Limestone has to deal with Malachite, and Dolomite has huge-ass Talc clusters. Marble also has Malachite, and is metamorphic to boot.

3143
Limestone top layer? Yeah, often in Limestone malachite comes to the fore at the expense of the iron ores.

I share most of Bucket's idiosyncracies, actually:

-Flat terrain

-Significant walled-in area (usually)

-Completely different here: I can get by for several years on ten logs, and I have magma, my wood dependency decreases even further.

-Organised fort structure

-Peasants get turned into haulers/drones. Skilled-but-useless dwarves get militarised.

-I try to use all my stone, or at least clear it from the rooms.

-I often expand slowly.

Yeah, but IIRC that's only for the layer stones; clusters @ veins are generated when the game needs to generate them, which, again IIRC, is why you have to designate the bottom of the entire map before using Reveal.

Now, for a dissertation of DF geology:

Iron will be found mostly in sedimentary layers (limonite, magnetite, hematite.)and igneous extrusive layers (hematite)

Copper can be found anywhere(tetrahedrite), but especially in igneous extrusive areas (native copper) and limestone and marble (malachite).

Tin can be found in Granite (cassiterite). Same with Bismuth (bismuthinite).

Zinc can be found in metamorphic layers (sphalerite).

Nickel can be found in Gabbro (garnierite).

Lead can be found in igneous extrusive, metamorphic, Limestone and Granite layers (galena)

Gold can be found in any igneous layer (native gold).

Silver can be found anywhere (tetrahedrite), but especially in igneous extrusive, metamorpihic and Limestone layers (galena), and especially especially in Granite (galena, native silver, horn silver).

Platinum can be found in Gabbro layers within Olivine clusters, and in sedimentary layers within Magnetite clusters.

Aluminium can be found in igneous extrusive layers.

Coal can be found in Sedimentary areas (bituminous coal, lignite).

Keep this in mind when finding a spot.

I thought that even though armour would stop a bullet (and thus pass the 'proofing',) the armour itself would fuck up the knight's intestines and kill him with internal bleeding instead?

3148
Sometimes you can be unlucky. Regenning the world and embatrking agian on the same place *MIGHT* help. I think veins and clusters are generated at embark, not worldgen, right?

My forts are all the same.

Bedroom levels.

Workshop levels.

EDIT: Gah, those are really small, I'll make a couple screenshots.
2NDEDIT: There we go.

Miner moods behave like mason moods; it's a bit nonsensical that mining is moodable at all: it has no workshop.
