DF Modding / Re: "Star Fortress" - Would it work?
« on: August 02, 2011, 05:29:58 pm »
Please tell me I'm not the only history person here...  There is a historical fortress architecture known as the star fort.  I was so expecting this thread to be about that.  The first post even looks like it could be construed that way except that it says "sci-fi".

Come to think of it, this architecture with your scifi ideas would probably create a nigh undefeatable fortress.  The architecture itself was literally invented to deal with things like the advent of cannon.

I don't suppose you've tried copying the existing saves over to one of the other (functional) downloads?  I see no reason that shouldn't work unless you're moving between different versions of DF, which should still theoretically work as long as you're moving forward versions and within the 31.xx era.

So just man up and get a psychiatrist.  They can do wonders to help you.

Or brainwash you.  Either way you'll end up actually enjoying life.

I was really hoping we wouldn't have to tell him that.

I'm using Windows Vista x64.
Checking my Programs and Features, I'm seeing the following:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB929729)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended

I don't know much about the whole .NET thing.

Forgive me for being so cold, but stop being a lazy bum.  Open the Dwarf Fortress folder and launch the executable yourself.  The folders the utilities are in seem to be in three folders in ./LNP/Utilities/ .  If you honestly can't handle launching executables yourself, you really don't stand much of a chance of learning to play this game.

Jerkish behavior aside, you can download the latest .NET here.  I don't know if you have everything you need, but this ought to make sure of it.

Does it really count as dying if it still gets multiple posts per day?

And can't we already mod any liquid fuel tank to side-mount?  Why should that require a special decoupler?

Yes, that will work exactly as you want.

Just for the future though, if you have data (especially a lot of data) and need to see it in specific ways, a database and queries would probably suit the purpose better.  Nothing stopping you from taking the query data and making a chart from that if you need it also.

I have no problem calling out people that are acting irregularly.  I do have a problem with doing so in an aggressive enough manner as to escalate conflict.  I don't like fighting unnecessary battles.  Make it a necessary battle then I'm not responsible for what happens to you.

Oh this is just too perfect.  The very first result I get is this:

Dwarven Hammer of the Third Reich

That still doesn't explain the "whiny, bitching liberals" image macro at all.

He's getting caught up in and perpetuating the flame war.  You're a better man than that Capn.  Don't fight an unnecessary war.

And to everyone else, you do realize that if you keep fighting like that, Toady'll just lock the thread...  A few people are failing to notice the difference between debate and fight.  Argue and insult are very different things.  And just because someone calls you out doesn't mean you have to shoot at them.

*Waits to be called a hippie* :P

Life Advice / Re: The Generic Computer Advice Thread
« on: July 31, 2011, 09:48:35 pm »
Weird network question.

Problem:

One computer is invisible to others connected to the modem. All other computers can see each other. I can't see other computers from this one, nor can I see it from others. It claims to be on an entirely different network. Without switching it from wired to wireless, it won't acknowledge that the other network exists.

How it came to be:

My mother called the internet people to fix the internet (was down for unknown reasons). My mother says that the people separated this computer (remotely, never came to the house) from the others to fix it (why?). I called them to get details and they said it was a computer issue and out of their zone.

Why it matters:

We use the 'invisible' computer as the hub of the networking. It's connected to the best printer in the house and we also use it for transferring files between computers.

Possibly useless details:

Invisible computer is a desktop running Windows 7. It also has a wireless card.
Other computers consist of two laptops on Windows 7, a netbook and a laptop on Vista and a desktop on XP.

Do all of the computers (including the offender) connect to the same router?  How do they connect to it?  It's possible you have 2 subnets.

This sounds like a router issue.  Try reseting (and possibly factory resetting, there will be a button on the back or bottom for that) the router.  Note that if you have special configurations, including encryption (password access), a factory reset will whip it out.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What the fuck Dimple Cups?

The principle purpose of dimple cups is to be milled into dye for your textile industry.

It's times like this I'd love to see Toady chime in and show us (if not the world) his response to reading this article.

This is interesting...people keep saying the perfect creature is a plant.  So I created a small, fast reproducing plant and left the sim on through the night.  It now consists of mostly animals in the sunny part of the drop and only a very few plants left on the outskirts.

EDIT: After running for approx. 24 hours, the program finally crashed inexplicably. :(

I finally figured it out. Apprarently the morphological filtering ( or how it's called ) option in the ATI Catalyst has this side-effect. Disabling it fixed it.

Pure luck in disabling that btw...

You have no idea just how much tech support is pure luck and guesswork.

Here's the XKCD Tech Support Flow Chart.  Note the option "Pick one at random".
