DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do dwarves die of old age?
« on: April 13, 2010, 08:12:55 pm »
Yes, dwarves WILL die of old age.  It just takes a good while.  Most fortresses won't survive long enough for the first generation to naturally croak.  Those folk from outside the fortress, though...they're a bit of a problem.

Wait, I'm lost...is it last Saturday or this coming Saturday?  Anyway...

Happy Birthday, Tarn Adams.  We're all really happy for everything.

A lot of stones are magma safe now.

I knew some were.  I hadn't realized it was quite that many.  I was assuming it was a smaller list that still would be somewhat rare...but most of those are quite common.  Off to make a reaction to get aluminum from bauxite.(it's where we get it in the modern world...apparently the process for getting it is outside DF's time frame)

A not-necessarily-windows project...always good...it gets annoying launching everything in wine or just passing it up.

If you can get this working, I look forward to it.  Good luck.

Creative Projects / Re: Closed Ecosystem Roguelike

Ecosystems tend to be very unstable, when population numbers are low.

My numbers weren't exactly what you'd call small.  I think I picked too aggressive a predator for the ecosystem.  DF can't hope to model the number of creatures I had, so I imagine any other rougelike would have a hard time with it.  But even larger ecologies can be very sensitive to change.  It may not collapse when the player hunts every wolf to extinction for eating his cattle...but it's going to take quite a blow.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Booze in cooking in the new version
« on: April 12, 2010, 08:03:28 pm »
Well, wasn't booze a solid substance in the last version?  Liquid didn't really exist...booze was actually alcoholic jello.  Now that we have more fluids, he may have made booze into a liquid.  Darn...I liked my pinot noir jello...

If you're looking to boost value with mechanisms, it's usually better to spit out a few metal ones these days; silver or steel's got the best value, iirc, and mechanics is the creation skill regardless if it's stone or metal. S'the best you're going to do if space is important... not that it particularly is anymore.

You know...I honestly didn't notice you could make mechanisms out of metal in the new version.  Mostly because I haven't been making my obscenely complex mechanical systems like i usually do.  Still, you probably have a LOT of stone laying around and the steel might be better utilised for military applications.  Unless, of course, you REALLY need magma-safe mechanisms.

Depends where you embark. Wildlife can differ from tasty mustox to zombified carp. Since the start of the game (A whole 2 embarks, counting my current one), I've--unintentionally--embarked with the biggest threat being Rhesus macaque. Of course, if you could find a middle-ground area with some threats, this challenge would actually be kinda fun.

Play the game a bit longer and you'll learn how to stop most things that aren't HFS from doing significant damage.  More than a few people have embarked on top of megabeasts and rushed it immediately.  They usually only lose one or two of the seven.  Mine you none of these guys have military training and probably little to no equipment.

Anything short of a zombie whale or HFS has no real shot at doing major damage once you learn to handle it.

Americans don't get much news about other countries (aside from this silly war) unless we actively search for it. It's nice getting views from other places on this forum.

No kidding. It's really annoying not getting news here.
Except that sometimes PBS will play BBC News.

I'm not sure if it's gov't or media...but the forces that be seem to ensure that Americans remain largely naive of the rest of the world.  They seem to try to give just enough information to make us feel informed.

And yes, I am an American.  I didn't assume the thread title was Obama; the thread title just looked like interesting so I read it.  But yeah, it's REALLY hard not to be "self-centered" when we're actively deprived of news and culture of other nations...whether enemy, neutral, and actual ally.

I hope you're not joking because I'm a conspiracy theorist. So there. I said it.
Today it just seemed too perfect for it to not be staged, but I know that russians didn't do it. I just know that people here in poland are grinding money, and attention from the tragedy, and want to hammer ptriotism into our heads. I don't like that. I may be a pole, but my favourite country is Sweden.

It's my understanding that a lot of Americans feel this way.  Sadly, the common man has no real say in anything...so...yeah...

Have things calmed down in your country yet?

My big point was that creating a stable ecosystem is hard WITHOUT extremely destructive forces (like disasters and humans) around.  Add them in and a LOT of bad things will all but assuredly happen.  Particularly is the ecosystem is accurately modelled.

Renewable resources don't necessarily cut it depending on modelling and player style.  I can still extinct the animal with infinite food supplies without much effort.  I mentioned simLife last time...I decided to launch it...  A very strong ecosystem nearly collapsed (91% of all animal life died out in about a game week...which is more like 5 seconds at the speed I was running) because I introduced 5 sharks.  Ecosystems are sensitive.  It doesn't take much to break them.  Humans usually aren't subtle.

Probably...I looked at the kitchen menu under stocks and it listed cooking as an option for my booze...so there's probably some way of making it work.  I just can't believe that Toady would have forgotten to remove the flag that makes it cookable if it really wasn't usable that way.

Spending adamantine on a caravan just seems wasteful.  I'll stick with my mechanisms.  I'm pretty sure they're still the most value I can get out of stone...unless I'm selling it, then I think stone mugs (three for one still, I hope) are probably still the best value.  Metal is FAR too valuable to waste on such things.  Most of the stuff I traditionally sell is made of clear glass.  Reasonably valueable and in near unlimited quantities.  Having a couple legendary glassmakers never hurt either.

Hmm. Since I can't get bones to gen properly, have we figured out a way to create a full corpse?

I'm not looking back but...weren't our earlier attempts at creating creatures giving us full corpses?

Why are you using java script over java?

He said he's doing it specifically to learn to use javascript.  Yeah, I agree java is better, but I won't argue with learning something new.  That being said, I know java but have never done anything like this.  So, I'm glad somebody else has an example to offer.

Hi!

Just to add to the easiness factor - I think I recall someone saying that a woodcutter used a wooden training axe to cut trees. If that actually works, then the challenge really becomes extremely easy, given the wood you get from the wagon ...

But I have not confirmed that possibility myself, so I may be wrong on that one.

Deathworks

yes, wooden axes will cut trees, baffling as the thought is

Oh that's right.  I completely forgot about that bug.  I'd agree with the dig to the underground with nothing idea...but I'm not sure how well you can survive with that many things trying to kill you.  Makes me want to try it!
