DF Modding / Multi-race forts?
« on: August 17, 2014, 07:19:16 pm »
I literally haven't touched DF since sometime in 2010 and the sheer number of mods available was overwhelming even back then, so forgive me for the noobish question, but are there any mods (or changes to the init files simple enough that I can do it myself) that make it possible to get human or elvish workers joining your fort, or even integrate captive goblins into the fort somehow? The latter would especially be appreciated, even if all they can do is haul....I guess goblin slave labor is still more humane than tossing them in the lava or leaving them locked in cages forever. :P

I kind of have a feeling the answer to all of the above is no, but then again it looks like people have managed to pull off some insanely complex stuff, and I assume the latest major update might allow even more, so who knows....

DF Modding / turn off emotions?
« on: March 26, 2008, 10:32:00 pm »
I don't know much about modding so I'm not sure this is even possible, but is there anything I can do to make my dwarves act more like dwarves and less like weepy emotionally unstable lunatics? We just scattered the goblins and instead of celebrating their victory and toasting their stouthearted friends who died gloriously in battle everyone is starting to tantrum and send yet another fortress into the destruction spiral. I'm sure this has happened to everyone, but I for one would like to enjoy bloody sieges without afterwards wishing I'd wussed out and just used traps instead...

I'm hoping there's a tag or something I can add to keep them from going berserk because they sprained their wrist or smelled a bad smell or some guy their ex-girlfriend's uncle's cousin kind of sort of knew ran out into a hail of arrows and got turned into a pincushion.

DF Gameplay Questions / how to designate nobles?
« on: October 29, 2007, 09:53:00 pm »
You're supposed to be able to turn your starting dwarves into actually useful nobles. I'm excited about this and want a broker right now, dang it.

So...uh, how do you do this? I know I'm likely missing something obvious but I had to ask.

DF Bug Reports / is dimple dye edible?
« on: November 29, 2006, 05:37:00 pm »
It doesn't seem like dye would be very appetizing, but I notice that one of my new dwarves prefers to consume it.

DF Suggestions / require confirmation before embarking
« on: September 21, 2006, 09:44:00 pm »
This happens to me constantly. I'll be in the middle of buying supplies, and I'll start typing 'meat' or 'ale' or whatever just a little too quickly, only to realize that I've accidentally sent all my dwarves off only half-prepared with the 'e' key and have to abandon the new fortress and start all over again. It's really annoying, and a simple 'Are you SURE you're ready to set off?' message would save me a lot of time and frustration.

DF Suggestions / make building an architect job
« on: February 08, 2008, 08:19:00 pm »
My masons and carpenters are vital to my fortress. I turn off their hauling jobs and set up special stockpiles and give them special bed and dining rooms, all designed to keep them in their workshops every moment that's possible. So it's very frustrating that there's no way to stop them from constantly running off to do grunt work all the peasants and gem setters and other useless immigrants that are supposed to be building my walls.

I think it would be realistic and less annoying if the job required for building any sort of wall or floor was simply 'architecture' (especially since that's kind of an underused skill as it is)

And as long as I'm making requests, I've always wished wood and stone walls/floors used different keys. I can live with placing each tile individually if I have too but it would be nice if every one of those times I didn't have to scroll past a twenty different types of wood when I want to build with stone, or vice versa.

DF Suggestions / water from ice
« on: November 01, 2007, 07:55:00 pm »
Just an idea I had that would make freezing and especially glacier maps a bit more workable - maybe a kitchen job could be added that would turn a few blocks of ice and a barrel into a barrel of water? (Preferably a barrel that they could dip a bucket into, in the case of an injured dwarf...)

DF Suggestions / statues with descriptions
« on: December 01, 2006, 11:05:00 am »
Even though I've been finding myself engraving walls and floors a lot more than I used to now that the designs have the cool little descriptions, I still use a lot more statues than engravings.

And so as I was decorating my new dining hall this morning, it occured to me that it was a shame that I couldn't tell what the statues were of. (And I know I can't be the first one to have thought of this...)

Granted, you wouldn't get a 'scene' this way, but it would be cool if they made statues of heros from the past or nobles and legendary dwarves in your own fortress. (with maybe the occasional demon or named monster thrown in, laughing or striking a menacing pose)

Is anything like this planned for some point in the future?

DF Suggestions / handle encrusting more like butchering
« on: March 02, 2007, 09:59:00 pm »
Just a thought I had as I was shuffling stockpiles around trying to keep my jeweler from encrusting the same wooden bin over and over again - as the title says, why not make encrusting (and maybe the decorating your craftsdwarf does) work more like butchering?

ie: pick an individual item with q or t or whatever and have options there to decorate or encrust it. This would take you to another menu that would let you choose specifically what you wanted done to it, at which point a job would automatically be created in the nearest jewelery and/or craftshop.

DF Suggestions / Nursery/Playground
« on: July 02, 2007, 01:50:00 pm »
I was just thinking how nice it would be to have a 'nursery' workshop that your kids would be more likely to hang out in, kind of like the way dogs stay near the kennel. This would have the benefit of keeping them out of harm's way, (especially if mommy's in the military), and keep them from cluttering up the halls any further or throwing parties in the statue room.

Either that or can we please have the ability to stuff them in cages until they grow up?

DF Suggestions / Let us trade for limestone please
« on: November 04, 2007, 05:54:00 pm »
What the title says - and if not that, would it at least be possible to allow us to use limestone blocks in a smelter?

The same thing goes for cut vs. uncut rock crystals.

Curses / idea for future game
« on: June 08, 2006, 06:27:00 pm »
I downloaded LCS the other day, and despite my evil Conservative leanings (and the fact that I keep dying) so far I've been having a blast with it.

The thing is, every time I play it I can't help but think how awesome it would be to take out the tongue-and-cheek humor and modern setting turn it into a nice, dark sci-fi game set in a dystopian future.

I mean, most of the basic gameplay and strategy elements are already there. You collect your funds and push your agenda through either legal or illegal means.

The player can already kidnap and brainwash people, now all you have to do is add the ability to sell them into slavery or interrogate and/or brutally murder them to make Soylent Green.

There could be different factions to roleplay, and maybe even some computer controlled ones to ally with or against.
You could try to destroy clone or robot production centers, or even build your own and crank out a few expendable minions. Sabotage the competition's factories, hack into their databases and steal technology to sell or try and reproduce yourself, or start a slander campaign against them. Of course propaganda would play just as big a role as it does in the current game.

...and yeah, okay, all of this is just armchair programming combined with a lot of wishful thinking, but hey, Toady, if you're looking for something to do in between writing Dwarf Fortress and starting its much anticipated sequel, Elf Fortress, (you are writing a game called Elf Fortress, right? Right?!), keep this one in            mind. Pretty please?   :)

DF General Discussion / dwarf profiles/preferences
« on: August 16, 2006, 11:33:00 pm »
I always get a kick out of reading the profiles of my dwarves, (especially when they contain fun facts like how Zon Risepaddles likes satyrs for their hairy legs....  :D) but I've noticed the last two lines are always the same.

quote:
She needs alcohol to get through the working day. She likes working outdoors and grumbles only mildly at inclement weather.

Will there eventually be some variation to this? Like a (gasp!) non-alcoholic dwarf, or one who prefers working indoors? Most of them  wind up working indoors anyway...

DF General Discussion / Nice tidy fortress?
« on: August 15, 2006, 11:06:00 pm »
Am I the only one that's just awful at designing fortresses? I'm always in such a rush to get the place up and running in the early game that I just throw down workshops and stockpiles wherever there's an inch of free space. The result is a horrible and not-terribly-efficient mess, but I can't seem to avoid it, even when I'm consciously trying.

Anyone have some screenshots of nice fortresses they can post and maybe give me a little inspiration?

DF General Discussion / Coolest. Name. Ever.
« on: November 26, 2006, 04:42:00 pm »
Okay, maybe this isn't quite worthy of it's own thread, but I don't care. :P

I just got a peasant named "Nil Shadowfortress". That is beyond awesome. I've changed his profession to 'Assassin' and am constructing him an awe-inspiring obsidian bedroom and personal training room complete with dark stone furniture and statues...and if any nobles get pissy about it, tough. They might just have a little 'accident'.   :D

I wonder if it's worth the trouble to capture and train a cougar to guard the secret meeting room? Wardogs just aren't assassin-iny enough...
